James Kalm stops by for a walking tour of this, Tal R's second show with this gallery, and is impressed with the selection of recent paintings. "Altstadt Girl" refers to a period in the artist's life in which he was a professor at the art academy in Dusseldorf's "Old City". As was his habit, he would make drawings of strangers in local hotel rooms. References to art historic subjects also enrich the content of these paintings and exploit the painter's exquisite touch and sense of the painter's medium.

I have watched this several times and the work seems to improve with time. A modern Matisse with the color.

interesting to see this in the context of Tal R's show in Tel Aviv right now. Seems like he sent us mostly the weaker works :-| Good opportunity to say a big thank you for your work with the videos, they allow me to keep in touch with what's going on in the New York scene but saves me the plane ticket fare :) so thanks for that and keep up the good work!

11:30 When I saw this I immediately thought it looked like his ex-wife, maybe the title ET was some weird joke, but then it hit me it was simply her initials! :D Great portrait!

Tal R is a wonderfull artist catching the atmosphere and feeling of a place and different scenarios. I think i has a very special feeling forvthe nuances in colors as a language of feeling, Imagination and longing. I wish the camera was not moving so much and would focus just a small moment on the whole image ... that would honour the artist and at the same time give us, the audience, the possibility to move more freely into the experience of the image - not just Rolling around - so please James take at least one deep breath before each image without moving the camera - that would make your otherways always interesting uploads a true pleasure

Very nice work. Excellent painter. It does seem a little obvious, especially when reviewing drawings, that he must be using the handiness of ladies of the night as subjects. I would def say he is a documentarian of this subject.

so how does that distemper work? is the rabbit skin glue still wet on the canvas, and then he rubs the pigments into the glue? not heard of this technique. thanks JK.

The hot glue is liquid that one mixes pigment into, and paints with. When it cools off, the remaining paint turns into a jell that can be refrigerated and reheated for reuse.

Un des mystères de la peinture repose dans la transgression des lois d'aujourd'hui pour en créer d'autres - des lois de demain , qui seront par la suite transgressées après demain afin de bâtir des règles du surlandemain
