Tala is a wildlife sanctuary spanning over 3000 hectares and incorporating many diverse natural environments, the reserve features over 380 bird species, with big game that includes kudu, hippo, giraffe and eland. The reserve is well stocked with a rich variety of game, bird and plant life, nestled in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal. Get up close with the tiny mongoose, or the largest of all the antelope in southern Africa, the eland. Tala boasts around 20 species of antelope, including some special breeds, such as the oribi, bushbuck and reedbuck, with other game in abundance.
From being greeted by warthogs as you arrive at the reception area to having zebras and giraffes visit you in the early morning, Tala Collection Game Reserve offers a memorable stay for all types of travellers.
One of the most appealing aspects of this KwaZulu-Natal game reserve is its ease of accessibility, coming to or from Durban - although, once here, you’ll feel like you're a million miles away from everything.
Low-key and off the well-beaten track, Tala spans some 3,000 hectares, encompassing a mix of acacia thornveld, open grassland and a sensitive wetland, which attracts more than 380 bird species, and plenty of big game, including kudu, hippo, giraffe and wildebeest. Being Malaria-free, with no large predators makes Tala a top-notch choice for families, and holidaymakers seeking a no-frills authentic bush break with the freedom to explore on your terms.
Accommodation at Tala is down-to-earth, secluded luxury. Along with a splendid mix of rooms across a collection of lodges and houses, with the option of self-catering in our Fisherman’s Cottage near the dam. While couples and solo travellers are most welcome, Tala is uniquely suited to larger groups. Dining options include La Tala Restaurant and traditional outdoor bomas, and our conference rooms make Tala ideal for day conferences, special occasions, weddings and tour groups visiting KwaZulu-Natal.
There is a fixed daily schedule at Tala, with game drives operating in the morning and afternoon, with coffee and sundowner stops to complete the experience. Spend the remainder of your day on a bush walk, at the pool or just relaxing in the privacy and comfort of your room. Tala's main lodge also features an outdoor viewing deck, an ideal spot for sundowners just before dinner.
The Phezulu Safari Park is all about celebrating the natural abundance of KwaZulu-Natal as well as the cultural and historical diversity of this South African province. This private game reserve is situated in Botha’s Hill, which is in the magnificent Valley of 1 000 Hills, just over 30 minutes’ drive from Durban.
Phezulu conducts scenic game drives every hour to allow visitors many opportunities to see the wildlife and the vegetation that makes this part of the country so beautiful. These drives are conducted in comfortable 4 x 4 vehicles and by an experienced guide that has a love for and insight into Africa, which makes his commentary all the more special.
Those embarking on one of these safari drives should look out for the many bird species, as well as blesbok, impala, wildebeest and giraffe. Of course, there are also other little mammals, insects, and more to spot, in addition to the gorgeous flora. So, keep your eyes open and your camera ready.
The Phezulu Crocodile and Snake Park tours are also fantastic for young and young-at-heart that want to get up close and personal with some really special creatures. Learn about exotic and indigenous reptiles via clued-up guides that ensure visitor safety, without compromising on a really special encounter. Demonstrations with the snakes and the feeding of the crocodiles are always exciting for the visitors, and take place on weekends.
The Phezulu Village offers visitors some great insights into the Gasa Clan. Enjoy a traditional Zulu dance (there are four dance performances every day), get a sneak peek into an authentic Zulu hut, learn about the customs and belief systems of these fascinating folk, and see various artefacts that attest to the Zulu people and culture of old.
