The lodge was built on the trail( highway) of these elephants. The herd of elephants never changes its path! It was a heck of a problem when they were building it. It isn’t the other way around. The elephants have chosen to live with it since they’ve never been disturbed. Usually they trample on anything on their way when they are agitated! The lodge was built for commercial purposes. We are lucky to enjoy these clips to learn how Africans, Zambians in particular peacefully live alongside with their wild animals.

Based on what I saw in this video, the elephants have made it clear that "If you leave us alone, we will leave you alone." This willingness on both sides to go along with this concept is why it has worked out for both sides. The elephants get continued access to the mango trees, and guests of the place get amazing pix and videos, along with the thrill of being close to wild elephants. Thanks for the post. I really liked it. I am disabled now, and have to do all of my travelling from my armchair. This was a great trip!🤗😄

Elephants are also highly intelligent, emotional and compassionate creatures. And it's true, they never forget. Do an elephant a kindness, and you have a friend for life. Harm an elephant, and they will remember that, too! However, they're also forgiving. In places where elephants have been harmed for poaching or due to war, they will, over time, forgive the humans and not act aggressively! Better than many humans!💕🐘🐘🐘💕

+Gina Boxley , You are absolutely correct. The resort should be congratulated for their vision to maintain the wide access, the elephant corridor that connects direct to the mango grove. I hope it was no accident. If the access was narrow, it is difficult to predict what would happen. The guests should exercise caution and preferably be less seen, Standing in the open to take photos is extremely foolish. The elephant is unaware of his or her strength and the power it processes, they are wild, it is foolish to think they are tame. The animals should not be pushed to make sudden decisions. The resort should publish basic rules that would control the behavior of the guests and strictly ensure that the rules are observed if not it could threaten the resort. The elephants are strong enough to pull the resort down in a morning. Ashley de Vos (Sri Lanka)

Of course they shouldn't but we live on this planet as well and it is not our choice to be around too. We have our own way of living and we don't have thick skins so we mostly die without building houses and etc. It may be not very good to build it on the elephant path but if you look in another way - predators won't reach those elephants there. +ROBIN SHANE Not exactly. They travel through there each year, but many animals establish territories and none of them give a flip about what other animals happen to have claimed the area. What he was getting at was they're intelligent enough to realize they're coming into an established "nest" or habitat, and being of a peaceful temperament this family decided that rather than attack the people who built a habitat around the mangoes they'd just make it clear that they didn't care either way; as long as these strangers don't bother them or interfere with their lunch, they wouldn't interfere with their new neighbors' choice of home.

This is one of those situations that you know only works so long as no idiot comes in and spoils the delicate arrangement. Presumably these elephants have never had any bad experiences with humans in this part of Zambia, and therefore have built a trust with them: much like the Deer in Nara park. It's one of those situations that seems too good to be ture, BUT so far it has been here. Pray nobody ruins it

Oh, and don't forget your book so you can point out the relevant verses to them before they stomp on you.

I come from Zambia. We had mango tree in our garden too growing up (but no elephants). Although mangos grow well in the climate here, mangos are not "ancestral" food for these animals. Its not native to the region. Mangos are fruit from India transplanted to Africa relatively recently by human horticulturalists. This is a human cultivated garden the elephants are raiding. Mango trees wouldn't have been there before the lodge. It's a rare treat. They don't find such fruit in the wild. So you can discount the "old elephant trail" tale. The Luawanga valley is replete with elephants, so you can say everything is a trail. But this is just a good ol' mango-raiding party. This particular group simply figured out mangos could be found in the lodge garden and when they're in season. Definite trespassing.

In India where Asian elephants live, yes it is eating wild mangoes but I agree it’s not ancestral to African elephants to eat mangoes. But African elephants are only tasked to find any vegetable fruit food they can see and find.

We need more wildlife corridors, places for animals to cross from one habitat to the next without coming into conflict with people. This example is both good and bad. On the one hand, it gives us an opportunity to further study these magnificent creatures. On the other hand, habituating animals to people can lead to more conflict. People also need to reuse more of our own spaces. Instead of sprawling outward, reuse empty buildings and build more densely inward.

@Smileyrie James you dont understand, elephants migrate based mostly on memory of where their mother took them for steady supply of food and water. Without that memory, it would mean death to the entire herd. Elephants truly are amazing animals.
