Can we talk some time to really appreciate this gymnast! A double layout! That second pass is amazing! She was definitely so ahead of her times! You will never be forgotten Olympic Champion! May you Rest In Peace Elena! ❤️

Shushu was unique with her eponymous skills, she was my favorite in Seoul by far. Had a lot of difficulty, look her UB routine with complex releases(An original hers too) , dismounting with the full in so popular now, Lena was a pioner with the DTY on vault too(Baitova was the first but Shushu become the second or third idk..)On beam she had a nice mount and the full twisting Korbut.

An interesting part of what makes a routine artistic is the use of the head and neck in the presentation, Its something the romanians (asides of silivas/comeneci and a few others) and to this day, the americans, were not good at or taught, because it gained no marks. Its wonderful how the soviets and the russians as a whole have always made use of the whole of the body and the expression of the routines

i agree with u but maybe it was bcoz of her age ...the routine is much more compatible with young cutesy gymnast (like Korbut in 76)..but it just doesnt match her loocoz she looks mature for her age. Thank god the routine in 88 Seoul is more mature..i think..befitting a queen that she is.

If she had competed in 1984 Olympics, it would be a tough battle between her, Mary Lou Retton and Ecaterina Szabó for the gold on floor.

@mokunju82964 жыл бұрын
Yeah, she's Vera Kolesnikova, Komova's mom. She competed here in Montreal where the Soviet team won the gold medal. Kolesnikova beated Omelianchik and Shushunova in 1986 Goodwill games. She had a very competitive FX routine with a full twisting double pike, triple twist and double pike dismount, she dismounted her beam routine with triple twist too, she was very talented like her daughter.

@MrMartinportnoy3 жыл бұрын

Her tumbling was terrific, but I have to say I found much of her pre 88 choreography to be a bit on the corny/cheesy side. 87 especially was just so off. This Routine looks like it was choreographed with a different gymnast in mind. I will never understand how the Soviets managed to put together such exquisite routines for all the others on this team, yet constantly undersold Shush artistically.

Mary Lou could beat neither fairly in 84. That's why it took TWO DECADES for another American to win Gold AA. That title goes to Carly Patterson, flawless & full of difficulty. Past the era of giving 10's with hops on vault & steps on FX that were given to Rhetton.

@shushunovafan43017 жыл бұрын
More graceful yes, but had easier tumbles and a weaker vault. Way better is hperbole at best, they were evenly matched. By 87 Omelianchick was a shadow of her former self. She could barely pull a double pike around.

MissScarlett27 And her best friend. Oksana was a floor and beam gymnast. Elena a true AA who won medals on all pieces and had more difficulty. A double straight back in 1985, with that landing. Wow.

Irina Baraksanova was the most graceful on this team in the classical sense. Shushunova and Omelianchik were show-stoppers. I enjoy seeing all the team come together at the end of this clip. The veteran Yurchenko was the den mother of this group.
