This presentation is the first in a series of videos that will follow the construction of a very detailed model train display at the Grain Academy Museum in Pioneer Acres of Alberta. See where the Grain Academy got it start, and its massive HO Scale train layout that was adored by so many Albertans!

I think not enough credit was given to the computer system that made the train work so well over the years. I will be first to admit that it does not equal what we could do with programing and digital today but for its time it was able to do something one could only dream of. Yes it had its problems near the end but after 30 plus years of running day in and day out it did well. Having spoken to the designer of the system I found how dependent it was on good engines (engines in the right place) and good clean track as much as people tried to maintain the best they could it was hard due to dust and some power issues in that area. Simply put what we can do today does not compare to what we could do back then and this is to often over looked.

Having been a past employee of both the Pool and Grain Academy Museum I appreciated the video but I do not agree with some of the statements regarding the history and the downfall.

I'm sorry you feel that way, is there anything you could tell me about the old Grain Academy story that I can use to make the DVD version of this documentary more historically accurate? If you'd like to talk more about it, feel free to email me at: ghostpinefilms@gmail.com As for what was said about the display: I wasn't implying that the computer system was bad by any means, and my greatest apologies if that's the way that this presentation made it sound. In fact, that computer was state of the art when it was first installed. Absolutely amazing what it could do considering it from the early 1990s. I was basing this video off what I remember from the Grain Academy. I was the railway maintainer in the latter few years of that fine museum, and unfortunately age was not kind to that display. I would clean the track and locomotives wheels every time I was in, and make sure to get as many freight cars back on the rails as I could. The sad reality was, the older that computer became, the less reliable it was. As I recal, most of the issues we had was on account of the computer system, but also in part the locomotives chosen for the display. I will be sure to clarify these points in the next few parts of this series, and will also explain how they were resolved for the new display. Thank you for your feedback Alan, its is much appreciated! Please consider emailing me so we can talk more, Thanks - Rob
