I felt this when I worked in a restaurant - well, it was a horrible place called Little Chef. These were usually in a motorway service station, but ours was on a back road between a town and going towards a number of other places, so people would use it as a stop-off point, particularly at the weekend. You talk about people coming in 20 minutes before closing time? Luxury! We were meant to close at 10pm, and even if someone came in at 9.55pm, they could order a full 3-course dinner and we'd have to serve them. Plus, we'd only get paid past 10pm if they stayed to 10.30, and then every 15 mins after that. Okay, a 3-course dinner would take them to around 10.40pm, but quite often we had people staying past 10pm, and with us getting out of the place around 10.20 so we didn't get paid past 10pm. It was the worst job I've ever had. This was 1995, so I'd make my own vlogs about it if I could remember all those times. We were on minimum wage and the place was owned by Rocco Forte who was as rich as an astronaut!

At my old supermarket job, we closed at 11pm. There was always this ONE GUY that comes in five minutes before we shut down everything. Me and my manager would always talk on the speaker and even go up to him reminding that we’re closed. But nah. Refused and continue his shopping. He even had the audacity to tell us that we should stay open longer. We’re open from 7am to 11pm. NO WE SHOULDN’T! My store closed down a few months ago so now he’s someone else’s problem. I actually enjoyed my job so most of the time I would stay longer than my usual shift. But when it’s time to close. IT’S TIME TO CLOSE! Been awhile since the last Tales From Retail. Great video, Fanta!

Oh god I have a story or two on people coming in right at closing. I work at my local dollar general and I will close a good portion of the time. There was a couple who came in once like 15 minutes before closing. When they got to the register, we were already closed technically and they didn't have just a couple of items. They had a cart full of groceries and 12 packs of drinks. It was so annoying and when they got done and left, they came back the next day to complain about not getting money off for a drink sale. They combined brands which keeps you from getting the sale but I didn't notice it until I looked at their receipt. People can be so inconsiderate.

Hit the nail on the head with this video. I work in a restaurant and what you said is absolutely correct! For anyone reading this comment if you go to a restaurant right before closing just know everyone in the restaurant hates you and the service you receive will more then likely not be the standard you would receive during the middle of the day or even an hour or so before closing. Because everyone does have to clean and restock and count tips. It usually takes an hour after closing to finish end of day tasks. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve had a family come in right before closing and finish eating and they continue to sit and talk for another hour after finishing eating. We’ve had to take measures like shutting the main lights off and turning the music off in the restaurant to send a message to them.

When I worked at Subway, we would kind of 'pre-close' so once we were actually closed there wasn't much left to do. One of the things we would do is clean a section of the lobby, and then close that section off, while still leaving 4 booths for customers to eat at for the last hour. Normally it was fine, but every once in a while we would get some putz that would decide to step over the barricade of tables and chairs and eat over there. Ugh. Worked at Barnes & Noble for 12 years, and we would always make several closing announcements in the last 20 minutes we were open. We would also put someone at the entrance somedays to let people know, "Hey, we are closing in a few minutes. Can I help you find anything?" Still constantly had problems with people farting around for a good 10 minutes after we were closed. Eventually I got fed up and just started to tell people that we are closed and they need to check out or leave. Of course they weren't happy, but they got their butts in gear and got the hell out.

I once worked at a craft store and we were closing at 9 on New Year’s Eve. I was going to close the doors and this lady rushes in the doors five minutes after we closed. I was like “hi we just closed 5 minutes ago.” She then yells at me and runs into the store. I checked her out and she told me how unprofessional I was and how she was going to call corporate. She also screamed “I know you just want to get out of here so you can go get drunk!” Litterally all I want to do is just go home and go to sleep. She ended up Calling corporate and I ended up getting in trouble for telling her we closed.

I never understood why restaurants didn't implement a policy along the lines of "you can't ARRIVE less than one hour before we close, you may only remain in the restaurant before closing time if you were already seated and ordered". No damn way could customers dare complain and expect the staff to remain working past closing time just so they can BEGIN their meal that late into the night.

I went into my favorite restaurant 1 hour before close one time. I go there all the time, but normally much earlier in the evening. I thought I was fine going a whole hour before closing, but they almost turned me away and then wanted me to take it to go. They decided to serve me, but when someone else came in behind me, they told that guy “We’re closed”. He said “but you don’t close until 9:30” and then said “but you have a customer right there” and they kept repeating “we are closed”. While eating , I realized they all had eyes on me ready for me to finish eating. After that experience, I knew an hour was still too late to show up for sit down food. I eat fast and dont conversate once I start eating, but I understand they want to get out of there.

I used to work at a restaurant as a dishwasher and would sometimes close and there was one time when a party stayed like more than a half hr after close couldn't finish all the cleaning cuz the party was still there cuz all the dishes had to be clean before we left so the party was holding us up and the server was getting annoyed too and apologized to me. As a gas station attendant in New Jersey, customers have to know when we are closed due to the fact that the canopy lights are off and the inside lights switch from being bright white to a very very very dim yellow and as always when closing, the open sign is off. Who pulls into a dark gas station at night and expects to get gas despite the outside lights being OFF? The answer is apparently people who never deserved their eyes since they never used them for anything useful.

Working many moons ago in New England in a Mall running up to Christmas and there was this large snowstorm that came through, the governor shuts the state down, but the Mall remains open, anyway about 2hrs into the storm so much snow had built up on the roof of the mall(Northshore Mall)that one of the AC units gets blocked and there is a fire, more smoke than anything. So we are all moved outside and the fire department and the police close it off, firefighters go in with breathing equipment on to deal with it. Then this woman comes along and starts arguing with the police and fire department demanding the mall is reopened because she has driven there in a snowstorm and she isn't going home until she has shopped!!! needless to say the police ended up taking away, never seen anything quite like it before or since

My restaurant closes at 10 except for Fridays and Saturdays. We had a pair of ladies come in with their respective children at 9:10. They ate there. No big deal. We watched them loosely as we wanted to get out early. They finished around 9:30 and we figured they were going to leave. They sat their on their phones, and we can't ask them to leave, so we started stacking chairs on tables in the eating area and figured they'd get the hint. They sat there, on their phones, until 10:15. It's annoying af. It's like they intentionally just sat there. The worst part is that they probably do this at other places and their kids are going to think it's cool to do that too.

I worked 5 years at as a cashier at a grocery store, I preferred the late afternoon to close shift and we closed at midnight. From 11pm to midnight, the only thing open is the self checkout. There were several occasions where we'd get one customer some up to the self checkout will a full large cart at about 5 to 10 minutes before midnght. Now, betweem 11:30pm and midnight and in 15 minute intervals, we would say it's whatever time and to finish shopping and get to the checkout. Well, these full cart people were slow, the self checkouts are slow and make things difficult so instead of me getting out at midnight I'm out 30 minutes later because they couldn't have come in earlier.

As having worked in the restaurant industry for almost 20 years I can definitely tell you that those guests that show up minutes before closing to your establishment are by far the worst. They’ll always order something well done along with a bunch of special requests as well as claim being “allergic” to gluten or something ridiculous and therefore want something instead to substitute the part of their dish they don’t want...I mean, are “allergic” to. For instance, say the dish is a filet mignonette with roasted fingerling potatoes and some sautéed veggies. Instead of the potatoes they don’t want something within reason like a side salad or just more veggies instead of the potatoes. No, of course not; they want something like pasta or say we have Scallops with risotto. They’ll want the risotto (which has GLUTEN). And then when told that we can’t just mix and match items from various entrees for your specific needs they throw a full on temper tantrum. And before they FINALLY chose their entree they’ll ask you to explain every. Single. Item; on the damn menu. And after they take their sweet time eating their meal, they’ll just sit and chat until the manager has to inform them that we closed over an hour ago. They’ll then ask to see a dessert menu. At which point I’ll remind them that I told them when they ordered to order everything then as the kitchen was closing/closed. And finally after waiting on them for about an hour and 20 mins. you’ll be lucky if you get a 10% tip after all of that. So glad that I’m no longer going to be working in that industry anymore after the world returns to normal-ish.

Y'know, I will say, I didn't tend to get too mad when people would cut it close... *if* they knew what they needed to do and that they could do it quickly. If you can handle yourself, get in, and get out, I couldn't care less. I mean, hey, store's still open, so no skin off my nose, that's what it's there for. But when people would come in close to close and then need a lot of stuff, a lot of help, or worse, not even know what they're looking for, that keeps people from getting their shit done, and more often than not makes us have to stay open after close, which is just a shitty thing to do. Stuff like that is just really inconsiderate, and it's always the same kinds of people who consistently do that shit.

When I became shiftlead there, I made damn sure that door was locked the very second we were supposed to close. Then hid myself in the office to do closing routines, and told the other employee to stay out on the floor and clean up so no customers would see us at the front counter and try to knock to get in. Customers wouldn't be able to understand that the system would not allow a rental after store hours, no matter how many times we tried telling them.

The worst are people coming in during the pandemic. They come in, knowing we have limited seating and camp for 3-7 hours. Our restaurant even encourages people to do so with football games and extended happy hours. It's rare they tip to accommodate for tying up a chunk of your section for an entire shift. Even worse they sometimes refuse to close their check with you if your relief person shows up! People showing up last minute is the icing on the cake.

That whole business model "the customers are always right" needs to be outlawed across all retail shops. lol Like that would ever happen. "The employees are always right not some jack me off customer."

I work at a public library and at my former branch we would announce over the intercom 10 minutes before we closed. Every single night without fail a line of people would come up to the desk after that announcement and ask to make a library account. That takes like 10 minutes per person! And there would be like 5 of these people! Every night!

My good buddy owns a taco/burrito joint here in our beach town and he stops serving a half hour before close for this reason. If you think customers in a regular town are bad u should see tourists. Many can be the most entitled, inconsiderate assholes you've ever met. He used to allow ppl to order right til close and stay as long as they want but it became a nightly thing for ppl to come in and sit for 1-2+ hours after close, even after he would drop progressively obvious hints. I was there one night helping him close so we could get to the beach for night fishing and freaking turned off all but one light and these drunk idiots went "oooh" like ppl do when thr lights go out and then continued to talk and chill whereupon I flat asked them to please leave. Kids in this county should have a mandatory 2 years in the military or a service job like waiting tables. You can always tell ppl who have worked in restaurants bc they are super nice and considerate to waiters and other staff.

10:55 This is why you don't get paid the big bucks to work in corporate. No logic or thinking is allowed in corporate. Where I work made a bunch of special displays and put them in the walkways, pushing everybody together through a narrow little passage, the whole time also playing reminders on the intercom to spread and distance. Where I work also gets on the intercom at close and informs people to come check out. There've been a few people who ignore it and keep leisurely shopping and following the employees around and asking questions over 30 minutes after close, even asking us to unclose displays so they can shop. We ARE allowed to leave when we are done closing or past our scheduled out though, so I'll just tell them "We're long closed and I'm leaving, so no" and leave. If that middle aged woman had eyebrows, she probably would've been scowling at me. We've also had Mexican women banging on the door and talking Spanish and broken english 30 minutes after close, wanting to be let in to shop. It's weird because I'm not remotely close to the border; I'm closer to the Canadian border. Oh and for a while we also had some Indian looking guys you could hardly understand come in like 10 till close and go into the restrooms with table, computer and phone and set up and try to use our bathrooms as an office and the managers would have to confront them. That stopped happening after about a month. I'm pretty sure they couldn't have had a legitimate business though.

Those big parties at restaurants right before they close have no idea what the hours are. They probably just have family visiting go out and find a place to eat and get caught up in all the talking. Similar stuff happens in other stores, many times I've had to stay overtime for hours at my job and I just make it out in time to get to the store right before they close. As a costumer I hate it when you arrive 10 or 5 minutes before close time and they've already locked the door. I'm just trying to get in and leave, I've had a long day. All I'm saying is there's always two sides to the story.

Summer before this last one, everyone was about ready to go, last hour had been nice and slow. The worst customer ever, who thinks everyone loves him when we all hate his guts, orders 10 pizzas 4-6 minutes before we close. My friend who worked in the pizza area nearly went literally crazy, and to be honest so did I.

If it says open till 20 its okay to eat till 20. Its your problem if you dont consider how long it takes you to close up. Opening hours are how long you will serve customers, not your total work hours.

I'm only this person if I know I'll be out before they close and I don't do this at restaurants, if I'm out that late I'm usually grabbing one thing from the store and I'm out, even then the latest I've left a place is 10 minutes before closing which isn't bad considering one time a person at my store didn't leave until 40 minutes after we closed, but I try to make it really quick and I'm out as fast as I got in

When I worked at Brookstone this guy came knocking on the door 45 minutes after closing. I had to explain to him that we've already counted down the registers and even if I wanted to let him in, I couldn't because my manager was counting the safe and wasn't readily available to talk to this guy. I had the misfortune of working two closing shifts in a row so this dickbag came back the next day right before closing and spent an hour "browsing" and wasting my time just to get even with me. I hate that guy and I hope all that anger and frustration in his soul built up and gave him a stroke. I can't imagine living my life like that.

Also it's funny you mentioned to the ones who don't work in retail the thing about if someone came up to you at the end of your shift and said you know what I'm gonna keep you here a little longer cuz I was thinking that one I had last minute customers like how would you like it if I held you up at your job when you're about to close and you wanna go home. Didn't say it but thought it. And it's also funny you mentioned it not making sense to limit hrs because of the pandemic because I totally agree and no one else besides you has brought that up. Like it makes no sense to limit the hrs cuz that just means it's gonna be more crowed cuz there's less times to go. But my job didn't limit hrs were still open til midnight.
