Every time a customer asked me if we had something and it wasn't on the shelf, I told them that if it's not out, we don't have it. As if we have some kind of emotional attachment to the movies and we don't want them to be sold, so we are keeping them in "the back" for safe keeping. So whenever they asked me to check "the back" I would go to the back and just basically treat it like a 5 minute break. Then I would come outside to the customer and tell them it's not there.

This is a common problem with most large retail department stores. They either hire too few or can't retain enough staff to keep every department covered, forcing the staff in adjacent departments to cover them and become stressed out & overworked.

It should either delight you or enrage you to know that "The Customer is always right" was a slogan for a department store, not some solemn vow. It was nothing more than a marketing gimmick that has gone out of context nowadays.

Most of the time, whenever a customer tells you "the customer is always right" it's because they are trying to get something for free or at a severely reduced price. So they aren't supporting shit, but actively harming the business.

To this day....I dispise going there unless I absolutely have to...and even then, I can feel my blood pressure rise and left eye start twitching even seeing that damned place. I got wrote up once for having a NOSEBLEED! It's insane. I finally got a job in corrections (prison guard) and when my last day at walmart came....i kid you not....I danced around walmart with both middle fingers in there air saying...fuck you...and you...and you...and especially fuck you! And danced out the doors backwards saluting the bird. After being at the prison (a level 5...max suecurity) for a few years, I told everyone who would listen...you know walmarts bad when your happier in prison than you are at walmart. Lol

Don't be surprised if you got ineligible to be rehired since you flipped the bird at them on your way out and because you found a better job. I am ineligible due to gross misconduct and found a new job 2 weeks later. I kid you not. I was let go May 12, 2023. I found $100 at self checkout grocery before my shift and didn't turn it in. A customer called about it, they saw me on camera, terminated me and I gave the work phone, discount card, name badge and vest back. I won't probably get unemployment anyway for gross misconduct, but I have my some sanity back. I have lingering left collarbone pane and around my crotch region and I hope its not a hernia or a tear from lifting heavy garbage with no help at the grocery compactor by myself. I had 3 interviews on the week I had interview at my current job and got hired there. At AT&T and Ace Hardware rejected me, but my current job which is a grocery store on May 26 got hired and started orientation at new job on May 30. I was only unemployed for 18 days. Granted its part-time my current job at $15.50 an hour as opposed to $14 at Walmart doing janitorial maintenance during during 1-10 shift, but what a difference in cleanliness as opposed to filthy Walmart and the customers are much nicer at my new job. I have so many Walmart stories myself to share in the 4 years and 3 months there. I started when it was $11 an hour there back on Feb 13, 2019. About the first year and 3 months were in apparel and the remaining in maintenance. Walmart is one of the worse jobs I've ever had next to Home Depot. Walmart might be slightly worse if not, worse. Walmart did me a favor. I only go there when I absolutely have to. I was not arrested, I gave the money back after accidently saying I didn't have it, when I remembered I did. I gave it back. I was terminated on the spot. When I go back, I realize why I hate it there and some of my lingering body pains come back. A few associates also said that someone spilled about why I was terminated and yet I didn't hardly tell anybody. I bet someone was listening from outside the managers office as I was terminated or since the lockers are right there and time clocks. Good riddance! Fuck Walmart, Fuck Sam's Club and Fuck the Walton family! I felt I was in North Korea seeing pictures in personnel of Sam Walton and at the breakroom as well as quotes of Supreme Leader Sam Walton. Fuck him TOO!

I saw that movie on endless repeat for *3 Months* while working at a small computer shop in 2006. Eventually myself and the other tech department guys had the film memorized, to the point it was invading our dreams. We threatened to smash the entire "wall of monitors" across from the service department if the GM didn't let us change the movie. Thank fortune our manager called the GM and he agreed And AMEN about the customer being a piece of shit 90% of the time

My worst experience was a customer inducing a panic attack. During college I had developed a mental illness and I am still learning how to live with it. My first week back at work, this self-righteous customer comes in with a return. The return was going smoothly until an item was not on the receipt she had. This customer lost her shit. She was so mad at me for her own incompetence, this was like a 10 minute ordeal, but I only remember bits and pieces because of the panic attack. I explain to her our store policy, which is EXTREMELY lenient. I was able to take the item back, but would only be allowed to give a store credit with no tax back. The customer continued to yell at me and said that “it was my people” to that I responded it was not my job to make sure cashiers do their job right. Bad move, because she just kept on yelling. By this time I’m repeating what I had explained to the woman, and can see my hand begin to shake really badly. I looked to my coworker who had called a manager twice, disclaimer: the managers in my store are amazing, so I don’t think them taking awhile was their own choice. As I begin to shake more and more, I knew what was coming so as I saw the manager I looked to her and said I had to go. Made it to the backroom and had a panic attack. I was huddled in the corner under all the jackets. I calmed myself down, and went back out there. I want to meet that customer again so I can tell her what she did to me. Customers can be such assholes. But yea, that’s my worst retail experience.

I totally understand where you're coming from. I loved the 2 to 11 shift when I worked at Lowes because I didn't have to deal with the store manager or most of the other managers. But I still did have to close down 2 departments by myself and cover more during my shift so yes it did suck. Anyway, one of the worst times I ever had was when I was busy putting up stock and a couple came in and started asking me questions about paint which is where I was working, so I stopped helping them, but I was just trying answer all of the questions fast so I could get back to what I was doing because I had a deadline to finish what I was doing. So they left. But later on, I got pulled into the office and wrote up because they had called the corporate office and complained about my attitude. So this one of the many why I hate most customers because they are whiney bitches and have no idea what we deal with on daily bases. So thank you so much for doing this series!

The management is awful. At my store they would schedule 4 associates to stock the entire store. One person has to do breaks lunches and the pull. Then they'd complain as to why the frieght isn't getting done. They also had a Manager working directly with her son. She'd have him work the paper pallets and juice pallets (easiest work)and have everyone else work all the mixed dry grocery pallets then she told upper management that her son worked most of the frieght.

A lot of the time, when customers ask for a manager, its because they've learned (from years of bad behavior) that if they pitch a big enough fit, they'll get what they want. Clearly, a manager can pull the DvD out of their posterior after the people who actually work in that department say its not there =P

I worked the Garden Department for 6 months. I was trained and knowledgeable about all things in that department, answering phones, and cashiering. I ended up being Garden/front end/sporting goods/pets/electronics/paint/cart attendant/online pickup/backroom/customer service. Good ol’ times. And in most of these different jobs, I was alone; even if it was super busy. So yea that was fun. Not knowing how to do everything, and everyone wants answers and help and I can only do so much on my own. So if you shop at Walmart, don’t do that to employees, honestly. You’re shopping at fucking Walmart, you don’t deserve that kind of attention from one associate trying to do everything. Walmart is paying one wage for 3-4 jobs for one person to do. So when you go to Walmart, grab your shit, ask easy questions, don’t ask them to spend 20 minutes looking for an item for you in back stock, get a great price on your shit, and get out. And don’t push your cart too far so that it locks up. Thanks. Bye. If you want special attention, come to Target, I work there now and I’d be happy to help you. I sell shoes and I had a customer come in and blame me specifically for his foot pain. He also had no clue how shoes should fit, and was horribly indecisive on what width he wanted his new shoes. (I kept getting a lot of angry "what if they're too tight/too sloppy once I get home? I'm not coming back a third time because of you." His feet also weren't wide, so idk wtf he was on about.) After chewing me out for causing him foot pain, he told me that I was completely incapable of helping him in the way he needed and left.

Ryan isthe SutUlfr fucking right! Im an unloader from before the cap system. The managers over cap 2 would not survive the old unload system in our store. Back in the day we would drag puke managers that fucked with us into the truck and either chew them out without any of their backup, or pull a wall down on them. Shit got done right. Now you guys have more managers than the store has roaches.

Sam Hem cap 2 in my Wal-Mart was basically this, you come at 2:00pm and leave at 11pm. When you start the shift your most likely doing one of the 2, working the conveyor belt which is only a few hour but is an intense few hour. With a lot of enrgy and focus needed. Or you'll be downstacking pallets that came through from the truck which can be annoying because of how fucking mixed up the departments and aisle one pallet can be. Even worse, a lot of times there is sugar on the bottom of the pallet stack and that shit always breaks with sugar spilling everwhere slowing the process down. And when you're done with whatever job you got that day you took a 15 min break. Then you stock shelves until about 6:00pm for a one hour lunch then come back and continue to stock shelves untill all your carts are either stocked or labeled. And then you take the labeled items to the back for overstock which is a bitch because there is never room. After that you help anyone whos left do exacly what you did. Your supervisors try to keep you till like 12:30 or 1:00 bucause the sytem sucks and nothing gets done.

It must be at least a national policy for walmart, because our store and every store I've been in is exactly like that. But lemme tell y'all something. I have heard the exact same thing in the walmart where I worked, but I worked in the deli. As horrifying it was covering these departments, we would all but beg people to help out in the deli and NOBODY wants to work in the deli. They literally could not pay people enough to pay the deli, and we were paid more than some of the managers and were the only department whose hours weren't cut to less than 20 a week.

Bro, I've had something very similar happen to me. I work at Shoe Carnival and this person wanted a shoe in a certain size that we didn't have. I looked around the area it was supposed to be because maybe it's been misplaced, it happens all the time. I don't see one. So I tell her that we didn't have it. (Side note, we keep all our stock out on the floor and none in the back) She begins to appear frustrated and says something along the lines of, "I saw it right here just a couple minutes ago." Not wanting to be rude since we obviously didn't have it, I told, "Maybe somebody bought it already." I didn't want to sound like I was calling her stupid for not realizing we didn't have it. She then demands I check for her and so I walk up to the front where the registers are and do a check for the shoe in that size. And it came up negative. Thankfully, my manager is awesome and I told her the situation and, thinking it might cause a scene, she walks back with me to tell her. The customer thankfully didn't blow up at us, but she was getting really close to.

Did 2 years in Electronics myself, but my experience was a bit different. I was never cross-trained for Photo or Mobile cause management didn't trust any of us D5 guys to handle photos or phones...but PS3's and X-Box's? Sure.......I was however trained for Paint on one end of the store and Fabric on the other end. Add to this that most nights after 8 or so til close at 11, they send all the floor associates home except me...cause electronics is full service. This left me covering literally 70% of the the store consisting of most of the departments across the back wall from Fabrics down to Sporting Goods and all the way up the side of the store through Automotive and Hardware/Paint....all by myself.......then I get screamed at when D5 is left all alone...go figure.

Walmart is hell, i dont know about the other eight circles, but my circle was 10pm-6am IMS(inventory management), unloading a 5000 piece truck by hand, in Florida, on a hot summer night, with half-staff, and our manager always telling us to "Hussle up guys, remember, 1000 pieces an hour." as we drag PALLETS of 50lb. bags of dog food and potting soil almost always stacked double high across the store to the garden or pets.....and when that shit falls, (which usually happened in the truck before we even opened it) ain't no one happy for the rest of the night. You better be fucking good at Tetris too, if you're not in the truck you're stackin pallets for at least 4 departments as you frantically try to read numerical codes as they come down the line. It got to the point, if the manager wasn't there we were just throwing stuff and had to wait till the truck people overheated to actually stack it on the pallet...if it's not glass or 100lbs. just chuck it over to wherever it goes, fuck it. But, let me tell you, there is nothing worse than unloading a truck in half-darkness when you realize a case of glass hot sauce, or pickles, or laundry detergent has broken in transit and now every box under it is coated in nasty, not to mention the smell or the broken glass....

I worked for the stores for 5 years and even before they made cuts to the overnight shift we had to hit well beyond our punching weight. I was just pretty much starting as an overnight stocker in grocery and we'd see nearly 6,000-8000 piece nights at least once or twice a week, one time leading to so many pallets ending up in grocery that they blocked off the bunkers. I think I recall there being about somewhere between 32 to 34 pallets that night for the main aisles, it easily could've been 40+ because I didn't count for the water, soda, and wine aisles. Manager wise, I only had issues with three, one trying to keep me from transferring, another trying to fire people she didn't like by changing scheduled days on people and also tried cutting hours of full time associates, and another telling me to my face if me and a newbie didn't finish two particularly heavy freight aisles by lunch she'd fire him. She denied ever saying that she was going to fire him, but I was blunt to his face about it and that's why we busted it out, the problem was that he wasn't able to keep pace because NOBODY checked up on him to bother to see if he knew how to stock, read labels, locate items, all the essentials to actually get the job done in the first place. I'm at the warehouse now, it's harder physically but I really dread the idea of ever going back to storefront, it's so much worse.

Walgreens: the stuporvisor was the brother-in-law to the Ass. Manager, so basically he did nothing, had me do his task lists in addition to mine own, and had me deal with the garbage collection on my breaks, cleaning the restroom and break room then when it's supposed to be my brief moments of rest. On Black Friday, he stayed in the office counting the safe and wouldn't help do backup cashiering while the customers and shoplifters vandalized the store. It was so "fun".

I worked as a Cart Associate for 2 Years at My Local Walmart. They treat Cart Associate like Crap. If One Cart was left in The Parking Lot and a Manager sees It. We get Blame for It. If We didn't have Both Sides caught up. We get fuss at as They Called It Coaching, or Written Up. Most of The Time when It's busy. Especially when It's Two of Us on The Weekends. We couldn't take No Breaks till Lunch until They Tell Us We could. My Manager Written Me Up for Going On My Lunch Late After Christmas was over. I Couldn't Take My Lunch On Time. Cause Another Manager on Christmas Eve Let My Co-Worker Go but Let Me stay till he was Finish. I was So Angry That About That. They got rid me For Hitting Somebody's Vehicle. The Customer Blame Me for Hitting Her Car an Told a CSM on Me when I Tried to Tell Her i couldn't see Where I was Going Because of The Rain. It was Pouring Hard and I had Water in My Eye so I didn't Know I Hit Her Vehicle or Not. It was My First Offense but They still Terminated Me. My Other Co-Worker told me They gave Him 26 Chances before They Fired and Re-Hire HIm after He Hit so many vehicles. That was mess up, They told me I can Re-hire within 6 Months. I Founded Another Job working as a DIsh Washer at My Local Cafe Restaurant. It doesn't pay as well as Walmart. But i get along with The Other Workers and Managers Much Better. That's My Experience at Walmart. Every time I see a Cart Associate working at Walmart I Feel for Them and Know How It was like when i use to work as One.

My worst experiences (besides the people I was checking out) always resulted from the Customer Service Managers having huge egos. These old, grouchy bitches who had a little bit of power decided to make life miserable for all the cashiers. Our computer system at the registers had to have been Windows 95 or some shit... Absolutely crazy. And there were a lot of things that needed the CSM approval or a code of some sort. The register will literally lock up and you have to wait for someone to come help you. Meanwhile your line gets ridiculously backed up because there's never enough cashiers hired. Even though it's the CSM's job to help you, they bitch and gripe at you because they had to come help. Even when I was brand new these people were supposed to train me at the register. They stood by me for 5 minutes and then left me to figure the rest out on my own. They also told us we needed to memorize all the codes for every fruit and vegetable in the store. (Because there's no barcodes) Absolutely ridiculous. The only thing worse than that was when I nearly got robbed at the register until the guy chickened out. Really scary stuff.

I'm standing there and I'm thinking, "Bitch, the manager is going to say the EXACT same thing this poor employee has been saying to you for the past 45 minutes! It’s a proper job if you need the money, if you don’t need the cash then I don’t recommend it. The turn over rate is insane for newbies, most just walk off and don’t come back. Those of us with priorities put up with way more than someone living rent free with parents. If you’re a lazy pot head who doesn’t like exercise and can’t follow basic instructions, there’s always crime but it doesn’t pay too well.

Many times I had the misfortune to have to stand @ the entrances and expected to cheerfully say Welcome to WalMart. We were supposed to put stickers on people with incoming items for return. And to check people going out that made the magnetic alarm go off. Thankfully, this never happened on my watch (but it very easily could have) there were occasions where that people would pick up a tv/dvd player etc and just walk out the door just like nothing was wrong. I often thought, seriously, even if we did say something about someone walking out with an unpaid item, seriously what could we do about it? Oh the stories I could tell. Anyways if you happen to shop @ Wal-Mart on a regular basis and recognize someone that has worked there for over 1 year, those are people who have seen it all and put up with a ton of crap from customers. In the scheme of things it seems that Wal-Mart is merely a stepping stone to get you to some other occupation. I do not recommend working there for a long haul.
