While they are sad to leave their farm, I am sad that this program has come to an end. I've felt like a part of history just watching this series. These people are HEROES in my book, actually experiencing their specialty of knowledge! A hard but extremely deep way of knowing a subject. Such work! I am personally grateful for their efforts and also the efforts of the folks who brought about this enjoyable program. Thanks!

@Jefferdaughter I know you posted this comment a long time ago, and you may have already found and viewed the various "Farm" series with Ruth, Alex and Peter. If not, you will absolutely love them. I became a huge history buff in my adulthood and these series are such a fantastic slice of history - all kinds of bits you might never learn from a textbook. My favourite is "Wartime Farm" ( probably because I'm a bit obsessed with WWII History) but they are all Fab. Also, any of the shows with Dr. Lucy Worlsley are really great, too. The biggest point about this is that we will kinda "need" to go back a few steps from our fully industrialized economy, because there are more and more and more people on this planet and all of them want a job. With full globalisation, industrialisation, rationalisation we are producing more and more efficiently ... which WILL leave people without a job. That WILL create a lot of dissatisfaction and economic refugees. So keep on making stuff yourself AND TEACH OTHERS HOW TO DO IT!

Moving to a system where people's needs are met makes a lot more sense, there's no reason people need to go backwards when we have the means of creating goods through automation. If people want to create their own items and live a simpler life, that's great - but they should do it because they enjoy, not because they have to. Right now we produce so many things we don't even need in excess. That's irrational and greed motivated and wasteful.

Muck - Not to mention the modern industrial approach to life depletes resources, and values corporate profits over human life. This system has poisoned us all. In the USA, 1 in 2 men are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes, and nearly as many women - while the overall life expectancy is going down (in years and standard of living). And 70% of those will get another cancer diagnosis, largely due to the radiation and/or chemotherapy - both are known to cause cancer. A bit of this could be attributed to longer lives, and a bit more to fancier diagnostic tools, but this is a steep jump from just a decade or so ago, when the odds were around 1 in 4. Is 'conveninece' and corporate profit worth it?

Love this series,so glad that they made more of them with the Victorian,Edwardian,and WWII farm series. Usually with many historical re enactments the wealthy and the aristocrats are focused on,I love that with the series they look at the ordinary working class people of the UK!⭐

Especially since most of us are descendants of those people, no matter what country they came from originally. I know that my family, who emigrated from Sweden, Germany and England, were mostly originally farmers and laborers (some were craftsmen)...not upperclass.

Again, another brilliant documentary has come to an end: I have learned so many useful lessons and loved watching all of you, especially Fonz (Peter Ginn) When cutting the wheat, Alex mentioned that an area of wheat didn't grow as high and blamed himself for poor spreading of seed, yet in truth, it actually happens due to underlying ancient structures ie walls, floors, etc. I learned this information from watching Time Team! I wish I could have worked along side all of you. I absolutely love these programs, much better than junk reality TV. Keep making more; I've watched all that have been produced. I have watched all 12 of this series and enjoyed every minute of it. I am a country dweller in the state of Tn and live a different life than most people but nothing like what the people did 400 yrs ago and those 5 people did for a year. Excellent series !!!

A delightful series, giving one a good appreciation for the hardships and ingenuity of our forbears (I'm a Brit from Norfolk, England) which we all benefit from today. Visit Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia and you will see a parallel of life in one of the original colonies of the future United States, at about the same time period as this series.

I really enjoyed and learned a lot from this series. It is amazing how climate and geography influence the life style of people groups. For example life in the tropics was so largely different in the 1600s.

Not nescassarily our forefathers, I can relate to lot of this. I grew up in a farming community in the Vale of Evesham, just after WW2 . A lot of things that we take for granted today, were either on ration or, not available at all. I was raised by my Grandmother, and she still did almost everything the old ways. We had a cottage with an acre of garden. We kept chickens, a couple of pigs ( Wessex Saddlebacks ), half a dozen geese, and our cats and dogs. ( 2 jack Russels and a Lurcher.) We grew all our own vegetables, potatoes, cabbage, peas, beans etc. We also grew red currants, black currants, gooseberries . The old ways are gone now, it was areal joy to watch this series. This was when BBC made programs worth watching, not like the garbage they churn out today.

Why must all good things come to an end? Watching this show always makes me feel like I am richer than the Queen of England ever was owning my own washer and dryer...and I get to eat strawberries and raspberries with cream almost all year round.

It was officially supposed to be the oldest house in Connecticut (ca.1637) but that was based on some thin evidence and although there was a house by 1640, I doubt it was this one. None the less, It has lambs tongue stops and beaded joists so definitely in the First Period. …and a conjectural rebuilt 8 ft fireplace!!

The only thing that would've made it better would have been had they actually been able to live and sleep there full time, completely immersed in the experience of living the way they did 400 years ago. Saw every episode...what a marvelous time machine...and a deep appreciation for those 17th century farmers. Thank you for this enlightening production! The word farmer takes on new and profound meaning with huge respect for their jack/jill of all trades skills. But the producers failed to take us into the enactors' lives. E.g., what were their biometrics before and after? How bout a thumbnail about each one and why they were selected? Did they really sleep there? Did they entertain each other? Were there medical issues that cropped up (pun intended)? Still a very satisfying work that checks all the production values...smart spare narration...good photography...sound qualities...evocative music...solid editing...high education value...appealing actors. Well done!! My thanks!

OopzyDayzy Have you looked into getting a multi zone player? I live in Australia & got one because many movies/TV shows from over seas aren't avaliable here on DVD/Blu-ray. So ordering them from Amazon is often the only way I can get them here.

Most DVD players/computers will play the European format, but you can only switch a few times. So do save an old computer or player to have one set to each. Then order the River Cottage series. You will love it!

yeah, I want more, too. Since a week ago when I have accidentally stumbled upon episode 1 of "Secrets of the Castle" (it just randomly popped up in my youtube feed) I have been hooked to these fantastic insights into history. The only thing I've done in this last week - and thanks God that I'm unemployed and had a lot of spare time - is sleep, drink, and watch these guys' series. I have fully watched Victorian Farm, Edwardian Farm, Full Steam Ahead, Tudor Monastery, Secrets of the Castle, and now this. And I can't believe there's no more of it (Wartime Farm didn't really do it for me since I'm not interested in wars). So yeah.... I want more and don't know where to find more from these guys. I think I've run all possible searches in youtube trying to find other reenactments of ruth and peter. But to no avail, obviously :(

My back doesn't! I grew some ancient grains wheat last year as an experiment. It was only a tiny fraction of this field. The trouble I had with rats and pigeons! They must have ate half the crop. I harvested what was left and my chickens loved it! I reckon it was it's freshness, as they corn I usually buy they can take or leave.
