Once again brilliant top quality narration and presentation by Steve a veritable walking encyclopedia of such diverse cases of capital murder cases throughout the 20th Century. How no TV producer has yet approached Steve to offer a contract for a series of 'Tales From The Hangman's Record' is beyond me. They would be hugely popular and suit many interested parties!

Another great Job Sir!. This brings back some (not so long ago) memories of fingerprints. Before computerisation fingerprints were often sent to the Fingerprint Dept of the Metropolitan Police as they had the most comprehensive records and a world renowned team of experts. Its hard to believe today that the fingerprints were taken to the Railway Station where they were first handed to the BTP (British Transport Police) they would then see to it that they got to London where they were then handed onto a Metropolitan Officer who took them to Scotland Yard, all this done hand to hand. As you stated it could take some time depending on the urgency, today it takes seconds. Results were eagerly awaited as investigations were stalled until as suspect identified.

If my memory serves me, Harry Allen was landlord of the Junction Hotel, Besses O'th Barn and later the Rope and Anchor at Fleetwood. Burnley outplayed Tottenham for some 60 minutes in the final, but fell behind to an early Greaves goal and conceded a second to Bobby Smith shortly after Robson's equaliser. A penalty was given against Tom Cummings for handball and Blanchflower made it 3-1 from the spot kick. Good video describing the sheer banality of many murders and the idiots who committed them.

I love little snippets of history. They would have been huge for the people involved and their neighbours, but tiny in comparison with two world wars and the Depression from the first half of the 20th century. I made a point of driving past Ivy Street this morning and although the shop fronts have changed, the junction with Moston Lane is still there and unless the pavement has been widened I suspect little else has changed. There's still a shop on the corner. I did wonder if the people on the footpath had any what had happened there 60 or so years ago.

Steve, is there documentary evidence of the supposed bet between Smith and DI Butcher. I have seen it in several accounts of the case but it would seem to be a highly unprofessional thing for a policeman to say to a suspect
@thehangmansrecord2860 Жыл бұрын
Tony Fletcher was a fingerprint officer on the case and recorded that in his book. I never took it as unprofessional as I assumed Smith was making a cocky boast and Butcher was sort of saying I wouldn't be so sure....

I am sorry to be picky, but the newspaper article states "A possibility that Mrs. Cross's assailant was after the Cup tickets was discarded when it was found that they were safe in Mr. Cross's possession." The fact that the tickets were with Mr Cross doesn't rule out the possibility that the assailant attacked Mrs Cross for the tickets and that motive should not have been discarded.

I think the detectives ruled the cup tickets out immediately, so much so that when one of the detectives involved later wrote about the case he never even mentioned the tickets as being a possible motive for the attack
