Okee68 I have a question about the sound track and ride that I'm really curious about. I'm a huge fan of the Krofft brothers TV Shows (H.R Pufnstuf and Lidsville are my absolute favorites). I know that Sid and Marty Krofft designed the sets and animatronics for the ride, and I was wondering if they wrote the music for it as well. What makes me think that they did is because the theme songs for each series explains the plot of the show, with each theme song generally running about a minute and a half to two minutes long and they go into great detail about the back story of what the show is about. What makes me really curious as to if the wrote it is the fact that the opening song sounds like it could easily be a theme song to one of their shows since it follows their formula of laying out the plot line of the story. Do you happen to know if they wrote the songs? I am really curious.
@okefenokee_rabbit5 жыл бұрын
Oh man, you just happened to choose exactly the _wrong_ song to use as an example, I'm afraid! While Sid and Marty Krofft _were_ responsible for retrofitting the ride with new animated figures, scenes, and audio in 1968, the queue song itself is actually a remnant of the original _1967_ version of the attraction, which they had no involvement with. The rest of the music you hear in the video was undoubtedly written by the Kroffts, though. It even fits in more with their use of contemporary musical styles, as opposed to the traditional Dixieland motif and less "experimental" tone of the queue song. Very clever observation, though. I had never even thought of the queue song that way until your post.

The fact that the master copy of the crow’s warning was lost and we STILL somehow have a copy, albeit a poorer quality one, is a testament to how insanely miraculous it is that we have so much of this ride documented at all. There are rides that were around much more recently than Okefenokee that we have hardly any documentation of.

The fact that Tim Hollis captured four different audio recordings of the ride and managed to obtain copies of almost every single one of the ride's source reels by asking exactly the right person was nothing short of a one-in-a-million scenario. That's not even to mention the massive treasure trove of professionally recorded film that miraculously showed up on a stock footage website mere months after I uploaded this video.

It's scary how close this could have come to being lost media. Infinite thanks to Tim for requesting these tracks and to the employee who gave them to him so future generations can enjoy them. The queue song is especially charming, so it would have been a real shame if the only copies of it had all been scrapped decades ago, which could have easily happened in any other timeline where Tim either didn't exist, didn't have the passion or courage to ask or the employee had simply said, "nah." That soundtrack has stuck with me for decades, I’m certainly glad to hear it again. However, one rumor about the attraction simply isn’t true, all of the figures weren’t destroyed right after closure. Me and a couple of my other work buddies saved some of the figures and took them home to commemorate surviving working on the attraction, still got the figures lying around in my storage locker. BTW: I've actually started developing ideas for a graphic novel inspired by this ride both story and art wise (with the main artistic influence being the concept art).
@okefenokee_rabbit5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there was definitely some real effort that went into the creation of this ride's soundtrack. I think the music and songs being as enjoyable and well-made as they are were half the battle when it came to the overall quality of the attraction. If you actually end up making a graphic novel based on Tales of the Okefenokee at some point, using the Lozzi illustrations as references is definitely a smart move - those drawings, of course, are what the animated figures in the ride were based on to begin with. I think the most notable difference between the illustrations and the actual figures would have to be the shape of the rabbits' heads. In the illustrations, they're flared out on the sides, whereas the heads of the animated figures were basically just giant spoons. Anyway, if you don't get around to doing a graphic novel, I would love to see some Okefenokee art from you regardless! There's practically no fan art for the attraction online, and I'm always eager to see any type of new content related to it.

Okee68 Funny you mention that, with Easter being around the corner, I was planning on doing some Okefenokee fanart (which would also help me get better at the art style I’m going for). I’ve started practicing drawing the art style from those illustrations as reference. Actually the graphic novel I’m planning out is an anthology story of sorts that pays subtle homage to some of the more interesting obscure dark rides of the past. Of course the main two inspirations toward it are the Okefenokee ride and the old Bear-y Tales at Knott’s Berry Farm. I’ll hopefully show off some concept art for my ideas in the near future.

The scenes look absolutely ratty and poorly done. Which is not a huge surprise, given some of the design expectations of the time. The scenes were actually put together very well by non-Disney standards circa 1968, but a lot of those old, grainy photographs don't exactly do them justice. That footage presents a much more "correct" vision of what the ride was actually like. "Double-pan dowdy" is actually "apple pandowdy", by the way. Yeah, I'm the one who adds and manages the files in the download links; all of the black-and-white photos you see in the "Rare Photos" folder (aside from the Monster Plantation construction photo) come from Tim Hollis's book on Six Flags Over Georgia, which unfortunately features only greyscale versions of photographs which were originally shot in color. I _am_ looking into tracking down the sources for the Okefenokee photos from the book (which are all credited) and seeing if I can find the original color prints, though. I'm also currently working on making a better version of this video that fixes any mistakes I may have made and includes better pictures, text, and editing. I'll be sure to include that photo of the Crow Quartet among a slew of other new pictures, of course. I can't see this project being finished for quite some time though, because I don't think that kind of "update" is really worth attempting until I've come across enough new photos to make a considerable difference in the content of the video. Also, if you were wondering how exactly I was able to determine that the black-and-white picture of the Crow Quartet in question was indeed a shot of their second appearance, the answer lies within the set and props surrounding them, which don't match those of either the crows' appearance in the opening scene (in which the crows were positioned on a rocky surface) or their appearance at the end of the ride (in which they were positioned on a fallen branch in front of a large tree).

Case in point: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJfZhpx5epari8k The Tower of Terror at WDW has an echo effect applied to all of its jazz music choices. The music in this scene is strangely soothing to me.

I have a theory that someone owns footage of the 68 version and it’s in full.But before I tell the theory I am going to tell you to not take this for granted as it could be very wrong but with this said let’s get started.So just a few minutes ago I was trying to find out even more stuff about this ride and then I stumbled across an old SFOG message board and one of the discussions was about the Tales of the Okefenokee ride footage that surfaced keep in mind that the discussion was created 5 years ago.Then someone said that they own the documentary the footage was from and it was called Six Flags Over Georgia The Early Years.Now here is where the theory comes into play.I actually think Lain’s video was a preview of the Tales of the Okefenokee footage in that documentary this would mean that the full thing is in the documentary.The reason for this is quite simple.So this video is basically a Movie Trailer as in movie trailers give away some stuff but not the whole film.This the same for this video that would explain so many zoomed in camera shots in the video and this would also explain the weird music edited in.So I think he took the full ride footage from the documentary and edited it a ton including zoomed in camera shots,mixing up the scene order,replacing the music, and the removal of a ton of scenes from the footage.Then it was finally uploaded to KZbin.So someone has it in full.So there is my theory!

I have always wondered why in 1980 they didn't just give the Okefenokee a complete overhaul like they did to monster plantation surely it was still a well beloved and popular attraction. They could have just updated it with up to date technology and make necessary changes to the fur of the characters and put up better barriers to prevent people from getting on to the sets. I am sure this ride could have still been around to this day had six flags over gorgia had more care for a aging ride. What are your thoughts Okee68 and people in the comments.
@okefenokee_rabbit Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure the Okefenokee necessarily _was_ a beloved classic circa 1980, actually. That's not to say that it wasn't a well-liked attraction during the early years of the park, but I don't think it lasted quite long enough to achieve the same sort of "classic" status as something like Monster Plantation, which has been around for many decades. Remember that the 1968 ride operated for only twelve years before its closure, and by that point it was fairly outdated aesthetically and unimpressive technologically. Then, considering how the final four or so years of its operation were marred by technical issues, an ugly cosmetic overhaul, and overall deterioration, it's not hard to imagine that the general consensus at the time was that the Okefenokee was something of a wilted flower and was in need of replacement. While Six Flags _could have_ specifically commissioned Goddard Productions to devise an impressive, elaborate, entirely audioanimatronic interpretation of the Br'er Rabbit theme, a completely original attraction was always the most logical choice from a marketing standpoint. It would have been more difficult to sell parkgoers on a new big-budget attraction if it were merely an upgraded version of something that had already been in the park for years. A brilliantly unique and off-the-wall concept like Monster, on the other hand, was much easier to market in that regard. It's simply easier to generate interest for something entirely original and new than for something familiar and derivative. And, while it would be fascinating to see what a 1981 Goddard Productions interpretation of the Okefenokee would have been like, I think the unfortunate outcome of that situation is that such a ride would have eventually gotten the axe due to waning interest from parkgoers and the perception that the attraction was essentially a bootleg version of Splash Mountain. If you're familiar with the Spee-Lunkers of Six Flags Over Texas or "Injun Joe" at the St. Louis park, then you know what happens next: The Okefenokee would have been replaced with some cheap IP ride that has absolutely no regional character or unique identity. So, while in our reality we at least have Monster Mansion serving as one of the only anchors of creativity and regional flare left at Six Flags Over Georgia, I'm afraid those living in the timeline where the Okefenokee was given a massive overhaul circa 1981 don't have such a thing.

The actual procedure for detaching the animated figures from the floor likely required both an incredibly specific set of steps _and_ several minutes at the very least to accomplish, so even if somebody actually did have the insight to bring the correct tools, there's still no way they would have known _exactly_ what to do, and in such a lightning-fast, inhuman time so as to not be caught in the act by the next boatful of riders to boot. That's not even considering the fact that although the rabbits _were_ quite small in size, it would have been incredibly hard to keep one concealed while exiting the ride, even in something like a duffel bag, without one of the attendants catching on.

Judging by the cover of the June 1967 issue of Southern Living, the Mr. Rabbit and Mr. Fox figures, which seemed to have been roughly the same height, were probably about three feet tall, as you estimated. The Mr. Bear figures, judging by the same image, were likely around 4.5 feet. The rabbit kids appear to be only half as tall as Mr. Rabbit in the photos they're visible in, likely rounding them to the comically-tiny height of 1.5 feet.

The fur of the animated figures deteriorated at an excessive rate due to the humidity that accumulated inside of the ride building, and many of them had their fur replaced at least once, usually without regard as to what color the fur of the figure in question was "supposed" to be. That's why the Mr. Rabbit figures bore four different fur colors at one point.

The only things available on the internet related to the '67 version seem to be Lain Shakespeare's video, the queue song, a tiny handful of pictures (all of which you've probably seen already), and anything Tim Hollis has written or said about it. The reason the ride received a complete overhaul only a year after the park opened seems to be, according to Tim Hollis in his recent podcast with Kevin Perjurer, because of how ashamed of it SFoG was after it wasn't received well. As far as the animatronics go, I doubt a single one of them ending up surviving the revamp of '68, unfortunately. Considering how eager SFoG seemed to be in regards to totally erasing the original version of the attraction from existence, it's extremely unlikely that any sort of preservation attempt was made among anyone involved.

@timcampbell34925 жыл бұрын
I think this unlikely. Six Flags parks have been stepping away from anything old south for years now. The Confederate section of the park has been "The Peachtree" section of the park since the early/mid 1990's, if memory serves correctly. Unfortunately, the Uncle Remus stories would be too hot to handle in the current sociopolitical climate in this country. This is also why Disney hasn't released Song of the South to DVD or Blu-ray. When Monster runs it's course, it will be more likely that one of the Warner Brothers properties will be chosen to replace it. I have heard that Scooby-Doo was considered as Monster Plantation wound down. Luckily, it was decided, instead, to reformat Monster Plantation to Monster Mansion (removing the old south elements from the ride). The Monster ride is not without some controversy, considering the legal troubles of it's co-designer, Gary Goddard.

I haven't come across any photos of it, but you can vaguely make it out in the 1971 sample reel when the boat is moving through the storm scene. I don't think you can really see the face, but you can definitely make out some of its gnarled shape as a flash of lightning illuminates the scene.

Sid Krofft: "Lennie, how's your owl impression?" *Lennie Weinrib starts doing a bunch of weird, low-pitched ape noises in the recording booth* Sid Krofft: "Ah yes, perfect."

While I doubt this would happen, I think it’d be neat to see this ride make a comeback with updated animatronics

They all do. The soundtrack sounds like a Hanna-Barbera or Rankin-Bass soundtrack as well

Does anyone know the exact lyrics from Track #2: A Greeting From the Crow Quartet Song? I can't figure out what the word is at the end of the line "You should have seen us sitting _______" and it's driving me nuts! What rhymes with "get here!?"
@okefenokee_rabbit3 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure it's, "a show to see is sittin' 'round here." A strange choice of words, but a lot of things about the Okefenokee were far stranger, so I digress.

Who sings the first tune or is it random people?

I've never come across any documentation of the singers or musicians for either version of the ride, so I really have no idea.

@@okefenokee_rabbit The woman singing in solo sounds almost like Ruth Buzzi or Billie Hayes since she's Witchiepoo in H.R. Pufnstuf (another Sid & Marty Krofft project)

@@SouthJerseySam Keep in mind that the Krofft brothers had nothing to do with the 1967 version of the attraction, which the queue song is from. Among the voice cast of the 1968 Krofft Okefenokee were none other than Lennie Weinrib and Joan Gerber, so if the queue song had rather been made for the 1968 version, I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if Billie Hayes was actually the one who sang all of the solo lines in the queue song. It is entirely possible that it is still her in the song regardless, though.

Where did you get that 2 second clip from the que area from in the rare pictures folder?

That came from a home video uploaded by Tim Campbell on Flickr, which you can find here: www.flickr.com/photos/92709933@N05/15042607668/in/dateposted-public/ It's not too terribly interesting overall, but there are a few neat clips here and there.

Where the extra 3 rabbits with pails in the Tim hoills plan, the rabbits that weren’t scene in the reel footage actually there
@okefenokee_rabbit3 жыл бұрын
I've never seen any actual evidence suggesting that were any rabbits to the right of the cow. I think Tim Hollis was simply misremembering the scene way back when he made that floor plan.
