21:30 - I think Rutherford's implant acting up was supposed to symbolise him getting back to his true self, finally accepting who he really was. He was coerced into getting it in the first place and in the end it was holding him back. Him "falling out of love" with the Ceritos was him battling his own perfectionism (which was augmented by the logic of the implant) and getting to love himself for what he is. Also, I think my argument for the alternate Ceritos just being them from the future still stands - Carol is in charge on Starbase 80, Bold Bearded Boimler is a thing, Mariner will totally get the number one spot, later advancing to captain. Everything is coming up Boimler.

I agree with half of that. I have nothing to do with the last half of it, but I’m totally on board with your thoughts of Rutherford and his implant. It has been glitchy since ep one and clearly he didn’t need it.

Fun fact, the oberth, the science vessel you were trying to identify, was for some reason at the battle of wolf 359. If you ever feel hopeless, just remember that a science only ship with one phaser array was sent to fight with a borg tactical cube.

The ship type you were trying to identify was the Oberth class. The USS Grissom in ST III was a member of that class. The Oberths were science vessels.

@@WarpReactor It should probably also be mentioned that the every ship of the Oberth line was constructed in a starbase made entirely from desecrated burial grounds and thanks to a unexplained replicator malfunction their hulls were about as stable as jelly in an earthquake. Starfleet did consider just slapping an all-red paint scheme on 'em but the first time they tired there was a small catastrophic explosion and they thought better of it.

@@GregPrice-ep2dk there was this guy at Quark’s, think he’d been drinking for, like, ever and really twitchy at any loud, unexpected noises. Probably not the best place for him to be but, y’know, he had Quark bucks to spend so.. Anyway, yeah, he’d been assigned to an Oberth class and apparently it’s in the orientation tour. Wonder what happened to that guy, last I saw him he was trying to hide from security under a dabo table while screaming that he couldn’t go back. Weird, right?

In the season 4 Ferengi homeworld episode, it was mentioned that Mariner once crashed an Oberth. And in the season 3 finale, that T'Ana once served on an Oberth (only she said it with more swearing!)

Not enough people are talking about how Malor is prime first-officer material. He consistently made correct judgement calls all episode. He even took one look at the reality-ending space hole and, even if he didn't fully understand what it was, he understood what everyone was trying to do. He drew from his own experiences and reached the correct conclusion, even if he didn't know how to do it himself, letting Mariner use her know-how to get it done. Surround Malor with capable crewmates and he and Ma'ah are gonna be unstoppable.

I'm going to watch through your videos on The Expanse next. I think I'm going to have to watch The Witcher: Family of Wraiths again. It was so good, but I don't think it ever ended? There is a very sad detail about this last seasons intro: Every season before this one, one participant was added to the space battle. In this last one, it was 3 - one intended for season 5, one for season 6, one for season seven. O7 to the seasons that were planned out enough to have an intro reference, but will never be made!

Best argument I can think of for what Mariner did is she found a way to stabilize the rift, like a spillway in a dam. They couldn't close it, but they could channel it into something manageable. I do think it was a bit of a pull, but Engineer Mariner from the previous episode shows that her technical know-how can be engineer level; our Mariner just had baggage that made her act contrarian. Remember, she does love the warp core!

From the glimpse of Mariner in Starfleet, we see she was very much a science besty, but all the trauma changed her. If we ever get to see more Mariner, I’d love to see her exploring her nerdy side more.

I was so dubious of Lower Decks when I saw the first episode. With the questionable decisions made in STD, it really felt like all respect for the franchise was gone. Now, at the end of this road... I've rarely in my life been happier to admit I was wrong. I knew it at the end of the first season, that there was real love and passion in this show. And now that it's over, I'm so glad to have the heart of the franchise on full display. There's hope for Star Trek's future, as Star Trek gives hope for our future.

So creator Mike McMahan said he was told before season 5 that it was cancelled but maybe it wasn’t and he spent the first half of the season keeping things open for a possible season six before he decided to commit to wrapping things up. That’s why things like Rutherford growing out of his implant was crammed into one episode with little setup other than the start of the season where he told Tlynn that it was having difficulty syncing with the automatic doors on the ship. It’s also why he gave the bridge crew an episode instead of a season to develop etc.

what an epic end to the series! Like you've mentioned previously, it's not really an end as our main characters didn't say their goodbyes, but it does mark great transitions for them all. Rutherford letting go of his past so he can embrace his future. Tendi letting go of her culture's expectations so she can embrace her dream. T'Lyn letting go of the need for logic so she can explore ever wider perspectives. Mariner letting go of her self destructive tendencies so she can embrace her true self. Boimler letting go of his anxiety so he can do the same (this is how I think their friendship really started - they both saw things in the other that they really needed - Mariner needed more caution, Boimler needed more daring) Babylon 5?! YES!!!!!!

Oh and did I hear you mention you're planning on watching the movies? No spoilers but there's one scene in the Motion Picture which is going to make that reaction.... let's go with 'interesting' all on its own. Also just wanted to say thanks for not only going through the whole series of Lower Decks but for putting such effort in to each and every reaction. Damn near the perfect mix of reaction, thoughts / discussion and occasional wild panic. Just about the only thing missing is the occasional Boiler Scream ;-)

Given they had to adjust on the fly this was damn near the perfect ending. No, wait, not an ending more... a graduation. While the Cerritos has found herself caught up in big events before this is explicitly them getting an Enterprise-level mission to themselves from start to finish and absolutely crushing it. Better still it drives home one of the main themes of the show: the audience might be used to following the flagship of the fleet but Starlet has a *scary* amount of talent available top to bottom and choses to use it to explore the universe making things better for, umm, most people they meet along the way. God I'm going to miss this show, it just gets Star Trek and makes a modern version look so damn effortless. Oh and call me Mr Suspicious if you will but two science officers, two first officers... hmm, there's no way that could lead into some sort of one-off special that ends with two new ships in need of crews, nope, none whatsoever. *cough*

Eventually, when the time comes in the timeline, the Cerritos will be placed in the Fleet Museum. Why? Because the Cerritos IS the Enterprise of support vessels and it wasn't the Enterprise, or the Titan, or even the Defiant that saved the universe. It was the Cerritos, a California class Starfleet vessel. A class of ship that wasn't taken very seriously and was nearly replaced by psycho AI run ships. Here's hoping we see the gang in future projects.

I understand the writers were trying to include the main characters, but Boimler and Mariner should not have been remotely in the running for first officer, they're 3 ranks below Commander, which is required for the position. Besides that there are a lot of officers on the ship that outrank them that would be sort of annoyed. AND the position of first officer is not even up to the Captain, Fleet Command will post a new Commander to their ship. They'll get a posting message for someone new. Also the Senior science officer position should have been a Lt Cmdr, 2 ranks above Tendi and T'lyn, they'd be a junior, or assistant Senior Science officer. The writers took a bit too many rank liberties. They should have at the very least promoted them all the Lieutenants.

Lower Decks is over because Booms Tendy and Mariner are no longer lower decks. We would have to tread into ‘glee the next generation’ territory as we slide a new LD crew to continue this story in the current format. Our 5 core LDers would have to take the backseat which is not what we really want. Just wait for the next show ‘Upper Decks:TNNG’
