Today we head back to our What's Going On In... series, this time talking about modern Albania. We start in Tirana, talking about the history, the culture, the food, the safety and the prices. Albania is one of my favorite countries in the world, a nice mix of Turkish and Italian vibes with a purely Albanian spirit.

You got some history wrong, we didn’t migrate to kosovo, macedonia, or Montenegro because in the balkans wars and in the world wars albania lost a lot of land. And about immigrations it’s not the same as back then immigration of Albanians leaving albania. It has lowered a lot after the beginning of 2000s and even lower in the beginning of 2010

@googoo8609

Awesome video. Thanks for doing it! Just a few facts and corrections: 1. The catholic in Albania are mainly in north but they were influenced by Italy instead of Croatia or other neighbors. 2. There were multiple Albanian principalities and kingdoms during the period between the Ottoman invasion and fall of the eastern Roman Empire. 3. The Italians ambitions in Albania started because one of their prime minister, Franceso Crispi, who himself was an Albanian descendant from a migration that happened to southern Italy 500 years ago, they are called Arbereshe. 4. The capital city of Albania, Tirana, is warm because it is part of the Mediterranean climate. The more east you go though, the colder it gets. There are a lot of mountains, beautiful and great for hiking. In the southwest it is warm and there are a lot of beaches. 5. I wouldn’t call Albanian culture Ottomanised because the influence was both ways. The ottoman culture itself was a mixture of different cultures that were invaded by it combined with the original. If you asked a Muslim Albanian 130 years ago what you identify with, he’d probably say a citizen of the Ottoman Empire. Look over the history of the Ottoman Empire, you’ll notice Albanians are very heavily represented in the military and political elite of the country. For example world war 1, young Turk revolution,etc. 6. During World War 2, Albania was the only country in Europe that had more Jews before than after the War. This is because of Albanian culture of protecting the guest. Look up Kanun and besa if you’re interested. 7. If you’re looking to try authentic Albanian foods, my favorites are Tave dheu, ferges, patellxhane te mbushur, tave kosi, speca te mbushura, fli. 8. Albania is poor and there are not many opportunities in employment, but the quality of life is actually high. The thing is that it is rooted in our culture to complain about everything, especially corruption. Most live comfortably. A middle class family usually has at least 2 homes. Old people are supported by the diaspora. Healthcare is free. The weather is warm and the food is usually fresh. This is why the life expectancy in Albania is ranked 51st in the world. It would be even higher if only regions of the south were included.

Thanks for the video. Two little points. Authentic Albanians live in their authentic lands in Kosova, Macedonia, Montenegro and Greece. It's because of Greater Powers politics that those lands and people have been left outside Albania. Also we are definitely not a Muslim or Islamic country. We are proud of our Christian heritage since the beginning of Christianity and the figures you are referring to with regards to religion shares of population are based on the people that bothered to give an opinion on religion on the last census. Islam introduced into our lands is also an occupation and politics story. We Albanians not only know that we belong to Christian family naturally but we have contributed to Christianity too with two Albanian blood Popes, Scanderbeg as a Protector of Christianity in Europe and recently we have given Mother Teresa to the world. But, It is also true being Albanian takes priority for most of us before religion. Thank you again and hope you enjoyed your time in Albania.

Then why are there no Albanian shrines? All the orthodox churches and monasteries are Serbian and the mosques are built by Ottoman empire. There are two possibilities. 1 they never bothered to build anything or 2 they moved to the area during the ottoman period. It is known that most Albanians came from Albania during ww1 and after 1945 allot of Serbs were ethnicly cleansed in ww1 and the communists forbade return of displaced Serbs after 1945. Also 250000 Serbs left the province of KiM in 1999 when Nato occupied the area.

An excellent video. Most people know nothing about Albania. The long years under the dictatorship of Enver Hoxha don't help to create a very positive picture of the country. The type of communism in Albania was a bit like that of North Korea, with one man controlling the country from 1945 to his death in 1985. Albania was closed to the world and Hoxha ruled with an iron hand, using forced labor camps, execution and extrajudical killing to keep himself in power.
@hks4133
@hks4133 3 жыл бұрын
@HellBanians Yep, Hoxha was very protective toward Albanians (LOL) he killed them at night, especially if they were rich, educated or catholic. Hoxha was the epitome of the worst of the worst that could happen to Albania after 500 years ottoman rule. For those who don't know, I grew up in communist Albania - probably the most indoctrinated communist country ever - children were required to learn the name and poems about hoxha who was portrayed as the "benefactor" - no independent thoughts, every response in school had to start with "beloved uncle enver" did this and that for me... that he takes care of everything, there is no need for God, as communist party and comrade enver will take care of you. Hoxha used the police, the secret services, teachers about anybody and anything to make himself into the unreplaceable idol, the only ruling omnipotent god, in an "animal farm" where you can't even dissent as before his lackeys, his executors will destroy people you love the most before finishing you. People could not complain there is no food in the state controlled and run stores - even the sheo-shining "business" was owned by the government; the hoxha's government took by force even small plots of land from sustenance villagers, who ended-up working for points (not leks/money) - so you'd make 100 points that would get converted into some bread -probably half a loaf or a loaf of bread for one full day work in the muddy terrain, hard manual labor. People worked six days, but Sunday rarely was a day off, as even for us high school children Sunday was mandated as "voluntary" work, and dare you not participate! But, beyond the economic calamity, the regime by direct orders of hoxha created the "new man", but this was not the Nietzschean man, this new monster was indoctrinated from birth to worship hoxha and the communist party, and do anything and everything for the party - that meant he could spy (including lying against) his brother, father; the regime through secret police set the wife against the husband, neighbors against neighbors; children sometimes would report their parents to the teachers who in turn would report parents to the police for innocent things as mommy swore to God, or daddy said there is no potatoes at the store - these are not made up stories - people were sent to drain marshes for many years because they said Stalin's moustache. When hoxha died people were supposed to feel like the world ended, and cry and promise to the communist party that we (even though school kids) will fight all (imaginary) enemies) to keep his legacy up... and BS like that. Most of the "new man . or new people, ran out of Albanian barbed wire in 1991 when dictatorship fell finally in Albania, and did represent the Albanian people in the worst ways - I am not talking here for hundred of thousands of decent citizens who poured over the borders in search of a better life outside Albania. I have nothing but disdain and scorn for the system and the communist suite that ruled Albania. Today, their brethren, their children and followers are mercilessly ruling Albania, albeit they are not killing Albanians directly, but in many ways causing them to leave the country in search of better life, the same as in early 1990s. What do you expect more when those who govern justice are linked or are direct part of organized crime, those who provide laws and rules for "justice and democracy" are the same individuals who killed or ordered the killings of Albanian dissidents in the 1990s. May God help Albania!

The root of the controversy is their hypothesis that Albanian does not originate from the language of the Ancient Illyrians, the people or peoples who inhabited the Balkans in the Greek and Roman era. According to Classical writers, the Illyrians were a collection of tribes who lived in much of today’s Western Balkans, roughly corresponding to part of former Yugoslavia and modern Albania. Although Albanian and Illyrian have little or nothing in common, judging from the handful of Illyrian words that archeologists have retrieved, the Albanian link has long been cherished by Albanian nationalists..However most credible historians believe that todays modern Albanians having been under a communist regime for plenty of years have been brainwashed by hoax communist historical theories with no back up claims..

A little correction there: Albanians didn't flee Albania to move to Greece, Kosovo, Macedonia or Montenegro. All Albanians living in the neighboring countries bordering Albania are part of the same population who have lived in their ethnic territories for thousands of years. If you study in depth Albanian history you'll find out that its territories have been continuously decimated during the last 150 years. During Ottoman times, moving to the first WW and WWII. Our neighbors have profited to the expense of our territories. Case in point: the genocide of the Cham Albanians in Greece.

With food you will find that they may use Greek or Turkish words as their own. They don't seem to ever use indicators and just use the car horn for everything, was quite strange actually. It's good to see how things have changed quite drastically in the last 20 years since I was last there. Would be nice to go back to. Also even then the electricity would cut out a lot.

The thing is the only reason Albania doesnt resemble a muslim country is because its not a muslim country.Religions are based on philosophies and way of living not on what you declare.Albanians went from christianity to Islam just because they didnt want to pay taxes during the Ottoman empire but the way of living remained the same as it was before.So the 52% that declare themselves as Muslims are people that eat pork,drink alcohol,have parties,and dont even care about Allah or whatever.I dont think there is such a think as a modern and a muslim at the same time.You are either modern or a Muslim you cant be both because Islam is based on an ideology that doesnt allow you to be modern and have free will.I myself am a Pagan Albanian my family as well but i see no difference in the way of living with a Muslim Albanian simply because they are only Muslims by name not culturally.

16:30 Albanians didnt flee to the neighbouring countries, they were already there. Its jsut that those lands were not allowed to join Albania in 1912, after it declared independence from the ottoman empire. In fact, Albania itself almost wasnt allowed to exist, if it werent for some help from the US and president woodrow wilson.

You were right in arguing that many of the buildings in Central Tirana have Italian architecture appearance. Central Tirana around Scanderbeg square including all the government buildings, was designed and built by the Italians when they took over Albania between 1939 and 1944 during WWII. The war in Kosovo was in 1998. This was the same year that the uprising against the government occurred in Albania after the collapse of the pyramid schemes where many people lost their life savings. So Albanian people in Albania and Kosovo were hit by a perfect storm in 1997- 1998. Very sad history. Albanian people living in the neighbouring countries including Kosovo, are native to those lands. Slavs migrated in to the Balkans in the seventh century when the Balkans was under Roman occupation. There is no known time of the arrival of the Albanians in to the Balkans. This because Albanians have been living in the Balkans since before humans were able to record history. The first known mentioning of the Albanians was by the ancient Greco-Roman historian Ptolemy 150 AD.

Kosovo, Montenegro, Macedonia and to a certain extent Greece all have large Albanian populations because they have annexed Albanian ancestral homelands. But again you prefaced your statements by saying that you don’t know the history, and I agree. You’ve simply heard this or that traveling around the Balkans. Other than these historical weaknesses your attempt was decent. Good luck in your travels.

Awesome video man , exept for thing about Albanian diaspora , Albania diaspora is the albanians in EU , USA , TURKEY etc , the montenegro , greek and kosvo were albanian lands given to the winning countries after World Wars in London , bcs we werent developed that much back then , just got freedom from Ottoman empire in the 1912 , there is a reason why Kosova felt Albani and its bcs it is Albanian , but it's independent now , and Greater Albania is more a feeling or filosophy then we actually wanting it bcs we know we cant get it bcs of politics bigger then us, the albanians outside Albania will forever be in our hearts as Albania , anyway just to clarify it , otherwise great video thought to explain

I have visited richer countries and Albania has a better quality of life and people live longer, have universal healthcare, a very educated population. Albanians leave because they can, they are next to very rich countries, they have family and support in other countries and it is easier for them to/
