A representative of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan attended an Islamic summit organised by the OIC last week. The OIC, or the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, is a group of around 57 Muslim nations. Though the Taliban's foreign minister attended the OIC summit in 2021, he has skipped later meetings of the organisation. This latest summit has raised questions about how governments should deal with the Taliban. While they have consolidated their position in Kabul, concerns remain about women's rights and minority welfare there. Countries, including the US and India, have held talks with Taliban officials despite not recognising their regime in Kabul. Does this hybrid strategy work? How is the new Taliban regime's diplomacy different from the last one? Palki Sharma tells you.

It took 45 years for the world community to realize to stand up for human rights, women rights and education for Afghans. Let me be clear Afghans don't need prescriptions how to live life. War changes people. In Afghanistan, it changed millions. War leaves behind ugly wounds and scars on society. Nearly half a century of wars, Afghanistan needs time to heal the physical wounds, psychological wounds, emotional wounds, mental wounds and financial wounds. Afghan society has valid reasons to be sensitive to education for girls, women rights and employments for women for security and safety uncertainties reasons. Afghanistan priorities maybe different than where you and I live. The country is under international sanction with limited small budget. Taliban government is under domestic and foreign interferences. Let the Afghan society stand on its feet and let the Afghans walk on its own capacity. This requires time and patience.

The Taliban regime should practice a sober moral responsibility and exercise sounded moral law which makes a common sense as civilized and developed human beings who use their Allah (the supreme god) given conscience. Logically, education and progress is a natural right of all people including children, youth, old aged people, men and women. Having said that, respecting and following some gender/sex based values of all different religious groups' rules can be relevant to their followers. Otherwise, in this Allah awakened period of time, exercising ancient society's unchecked religious practices' values is a direct reflection of stagnation of human development and anti Allah's will to see the traces and levels of human progress from generation to generation by using and balancing both the human mind and conscience.
