If you're telling people to leave Korea when they complain, it's not always that easy. Some folks have job contracts tied to their visa, so leaving isn't that simple. Also, sometimes calling out issues is necessary for change.

They clearly aren't talking about constructive criticism. constructive criticism no matter how well its received is always valid. They were talking about the massive uptick in content creators that just sensationalize the hell out of everything related to Korea because its the hot new thing. And unfortunately thats just the nature of the internet. People will ride the waves of new trends hoping to gain a following. But putting myself in their shoes i can understand why they are frustrated. If outsiders were constantly dogpiling on my home country and criticizing every little aspect of its culture with very surface level knowledge, id be pretty pissed too.

Well, it's a lot easier than coming to Korea in the first place. Anytime you enter a new country or even job in the same country, there's a risk you won't like it, but you have to accept the risk. So, other people need to compensate you if the risk you accepted doesn't go your way? As a foreigner, you can't even vote in a foreign country, that shows it's not your right to suggest changes to them. And why should they change , when you've shown no interest in changing your countries to help them?

I think there's nothing wrong with being patriotic but something that needs to be understand is someone saying something negative about your country isn't a gripe at u. I think some people take criticisms of their country like it's a personal attack when it isn't. I'm Irish and I'm proud to be Irish but that doesn't mean I won't acknowledge problems with my country and doing that doesn't challenge my national identity nor should it challenge anyone else's

Thing is it isn't a universal practice to take potshots at ireland everyday, making it sound like a concentration camp and souring people's opinions on the country. What if everytime you opened KZbin you saw a new video reading "racism in Ireland" "Irish men are freaks" etc with 100,000's of views every other day? Would her exhausting. I'm sure you'd say "hmm... It doesn't seem that bad to me." Point is the scale of Korean criticism is far greater and far more unjustified, most of these people criticizing come from America, where if the Koreans that eyeball them on public transport (the extant of their racism) were in america they would likely be killed on the street. Two different worlds. Check your privilege.

This is a massive problem with Asian countries in general. Break the mirror instead of addressing the issue. Toxic patriotism to the point of jingoism. And often times these criticism are made simply to get views. Taking it personally is just self-defeating. There is also a self-selection bias when the guy says that people think "the good outweigh the bad", obviously they think so since foreigners in Korea are those who are able to choose where they live. If they choose to live in Korea then obviously it's because they think the good outweigh the bad. In the past couple of years there has been sharp increase of Koreans migrating to Southeast Asia. According to them, they love it there not just because of the way living cost but also due to the climate and that it is much healthier for their children's mental health. But again, self selection bias. Those who dont like Southeast Asia are not living there and stay in Korea instead.

I really enjoy Jerry’s interviews. He’s very respectful and handles the conversation with grace despite controversial topics. On a side note Sean’s body language is so bothersome? Maybe it’s the leaning but it looks like he’s putting up a wall with his arm when he talks. Anyway this is my first time knowing about Hankyute and I love her voice. 58:12 I really appreciate Songyun's perspective shared here. I believe it's crucial for long-term residents to address the genuine challenges of living in Korea. In my view, substantial changes can only occur when issues become widely acknowledged and discussed among expatriates. For instance, issues like obtaining jobs in Korea beyond English teaching or factory work are often overlooked. Having spent five years here, I can envision myself staying much longer. Consequently, I've developed a genuine concern for Korea's improvement. This extends not only to my own well-being and that of my Korean wife and family but also to all residents. Therefore, I hope to see more videos and conversations shedding light on the less favorable aspects of this country. The truth is, how Korea is perceived globally holds significant weight, and showcasing its challenges is a step towards positive change.

As a foreigner though, I hope by saying you worry about the progress of the country you don't simply mean to forcefully institute western values in Korean society. Asian countries in general will always be more conservative, most foreigners completely disrespect this aspect of Korea because they think the world revolves around the values of the west when Korea doesn't have 1/10ths of the issues America has due to the breakdown of social conservatism. I chalk it up to a lack of societal virtue, temperance and introspective ethical insight and respect for culture and tradition. What I'm trying to say is... Don't try to corrupt Korea with western degeneracy.

Korea is not your house, marrying a daughter of the house, doesn't make it your house. You can't go into someone else's house rearranging the furniture, changing the wallpaper cuz "this is the right way to do things". Having good intentions does not excuse this kind of behavior. At the end of the day, respect the rule of the house, and know your place. And I say this in the most neutral way possible.

After traveling to Korea and making local friends there, I can say that Korea has a lot of improvement to do in terms of social development, my friends there go through so many struggles because of how competitive and cold hearted living there can be. Yes, there is absolute lots of positives but also, just as any country in the world, they have a lot of flaws, just like all of our countries. You fail as a citizen when you tell your own people: stop complaining, traitor, love your country and stop critcizing it. No. If you love your country, you acknowledge the issues and create a discussion on how we can fix them. That shows you care and love your country. As for k-media, just like any media in any country, it shows a curated/unrealistic version of what reality is in that country. Obviously, media, as its suppose to, sells people an idea of what something is, which many people eat and believe (Really scary). I hope Korea improves, its heartbreaking to see so many young people so stressed and unhopeful so young. Regarding people talking negatively about Korea, well you have contents creators here in this table who make views and money exploitating that. So no, you dont get to make money and complaint about hearing what you know will get you views/money. You cant get your cake and eat it too. If you are so bothered about this content, change it. Why do we have to make same interviews about dating koreans as a foreigner time and time again? There is so many other topics you guys can expand on. Korea is more than just dating culture and market, its very rich in history and social issues. Shout out to Asian Boss for focusing on interviews with substantial topics that cover Korea's reality.

This is amazing folks! I mean, my Korean-American friend sent me this video and as someone who helps creators with data analysis part of their business, collaboration is KEY. A great example would be how the Korean travel KZbinr (Panibottle) collaborating with other KZbinrs pushed him over the 2 mil mark. Not only that, it landed him a commercial with a travel app and invited celebrities to their movement. I believe he also got the chance to be on live tv for their end-of-the-year award ceremony (and speak to the crowd as well). Keep up the collaboration folks. Not only is it the key to a fulfilling life in the long run, but I am certain that you will pull in the celebrities into your channel to push you way beyond the 2 mil mark. I am talking about people like Jay Park, Jessi, Joon Park, and more. And BTS, of course, as David mentioned. Hey y’all, when that happens, remember this comment. “When”, not “if”. 🤘

So many girls back then simply believed in all of those things, daydreaming to live in Korea but now, as you said, many start complaining about Korea after the society didn't live up to their expectations. probably many people feel the same way and that's why those videos can get lot more viewers. this is a siginificant change we can notice today about Korean contents.

Just started watching the video, but that's what I was going to say. A lot of content I was seeing seemed pretty idealized and kinda nationalistic. I'm a naturally skeptical person so I took it with a grain of salt of course. There's bad faith critiques that get made about Korea, along with every country. But I think it could just be a reaction or over compensation to actually try to talk about topics that are worthy of discussion that haven't been explored. But social media and content creation is really problematic because it seems like a race to the bottom with people doing stupid pranks or any other stupid rage baiting content.

David take this as a constructive critism please but you should get rid of your self-deprecating mindset. It's not the first time that It caught my attention so I'm commenting this now. You're a good looking guy that doing entertaining shows and people appreciate you, don't let yourself down when you meet with people who you think that has a greater position in life. We're all doing well enough by only staying alive, the rest doesn't matter. It's my personal opinion of course but as a host too you should lead the conversation more confidently, sometimes your guests are more incharge than you. I see you're a shy person which you mentioned before, and I see you're more fun when you're comfortable so I think you'll get better day by day on each ep as a host. And one last advice is you shouldn't stick with script too much, tell or ask about your daily lives or unrelated things here and there more because when you do it I feel like I enjoy listening to your podcast more. I know that in the french content about korea there is a trend of talking very negatively about the country to garner rage views. A famous one in Choi who is actually a french Korean. There is also the trend of comparing Japan to Korea. I feel like overglam content and ragecontent are both bad and can ruin one’s perception of the country if they haven’t visited. I see a ton of content about how Korea is super unsafe. I am so baffled that people from paris are making content like that. It’s a bit extreme.

True! Coming from Paris, I feel much safer living in Korea… People are indifferent and don’t bother you in public places. Me being an intuitive empath, this was excruciating to watch, i just couldn't help but feel Sean Solo's uncomfortableness of having to sit next to Jerry, you can even tell by his "dismissve body posture" towards Jerry (sort of shutting him out of the table circle), i could also see Jerry also noticed Seans dismissive posture from 5:21 and hence Jerry became also uncomfortable. They way Solo's eyes looked at Jerry from 1:37 is so cringe😬, i honestly felt sad for Jerry. I hope they are both fine with each other❤

Tbh I did also pick up a weird vibe from Sean’s body language but I didn’t want to judge him because you can’t really judge someone off of a KZbin video. I actually was looking through the comments to see if I was just imagining things or if anyone else might have noticed the “vibe”.

I'm also an intuitive empath (INFJ). Honestly, as a Korean, for a long time I found many of Jerry's videos to be passive-aggressively making Koreans look bad. My other Korean friends felt the same, and it was discouraging to watch his videos after a while. Ofc not all of them are like that, but he was on a run for a while. I'm the type to assess by patterns, reminding myself that consistent actions and repeated patterns are more reliable than my feelings or bias (that dang Ni lol)...and that being said, it happened too often for me to ignore. Even in the comments some Koreans would share an exasperated "this again?", then proceed to say something like "these type of people are in every country" because he would lack context and make it seem like only Koreans are doing whatever bad thing he was interviewing about. It's a speculation, or rather a guess...but maybe Sean felt that way too about some of his content and it made him feel uncomfortable with Jerry.

​@@bl00dFairy I am sorry, but I just finished ploughing through Sean's interview with my favorite Russian-speaking youtuber and he was absolutely inappropriate around her. The speed of decreasing distance between his body and her microphone was increasing exponentially, mainly from his side. At first, I had no idea who it was and controlled for my own bias (I am a scientist), and thought it's just some weird camera angle and I should give him the benefit of the doubt. Sure enough, towards the end of an hour-long intervew, if not as early as in the middle of it, he started asking THE MOST DISREPECTFUL question you could ask a Russian or Eastern European Woman and I am not going to repeat the gross question, let's just say it involves the phrase "one night stand." She responded once, he circled back to it yet again, she responded twice and he kept pushing and pushing with this aggressive impropriate in hopes she would give him a the answer he wanted. It was as cringey and uncomfortable as it gets. Very degrading and dehumanizing towards Eastern European women. But sure, you will keep posting this borderline incel propaganda of "Korean mean not being portrayed from an amenable angle" or "passively-aggressively" making them "look bad" but the data shows that Korean men are some of the most popular on the planet 2) the South Korea's soft power is growing stronger than ever 3) hence, some jerks like this guy Sean find it appropriate humiliating the women from less priveleged parts of the world, where returning to their homecountry will result in this Russian youtuber's imprisonment or worse due to her political view - her status alone makes her vulnerable and predators like this exploit that. So please be respectful, grow some emphathy and try to see it from the other people's perspective. Thank you.

Wonderful podcast and topics as usual :) I think for the sensational negative videos, the smaller creators could also be in a sticky place. Since outrage will get the strongest response, they may feel like the only way to get seen is to create crazy negative content to get views. I think political channels are stuck in the outrage politic echo chamber spiral craziness in for sure. I've also seen creators be pressured by their audience to speak about more negative things they have experienced in korea, and if they aren't as harsh as the audience thinks they should be the get comments telling them they shouldn't be so accepting of that kind of thing etc. Fingers crossed the younger gen will start to ask for more nuanced perspectives and not just wanna hate on korea. Every place is a little bit broken, just in different places and to different degrees. Sorry for the essay 😅

I think ppl need to understand that criticism about your country isnt always personal. Its not necessarily to say the ppl of country is bad. When there are certain events that are reoccurring and negative experiences especially involving ignorance or racism, its not as simple as saying" why are you here, just leave" you can still love a place and its culture, but be saddened by certain things that affect you

LOVE Jerry's and Han's content. Looking forward to all their future content! On to my thoughts on this episode. As a foreigner looking forward to traveling to South Korea later this year, I am always watching videos and reels on what to expect as a visitor...positive and negative views and perspectives. What to do and what not to do, because I feel i am culturally open and respective. Like what you and Sean stated, most of your followers/viewers are Americans and others outside of South Korea. For you guys to say if you dont like the negativity that is said about South Korea from its own citizens and also foreigners, GTFO. What a way to support your overseas followers and fans who may be coming to visit! I understand that you and Sean are proud Koreans. I'm sure it hurts your pride that people have negative things to say about your home country. Accept the fact that South Korea isn't all rainbows and unicorns. I am grateful that many content creators from South Korea and other parts of the world expose the positivity and negativity of being in South Korea. I hope to experience nothing but positive things when I visit. But won't be disappointed if I do experience the negatives. Being an informed and educated consumer allows me to be mentally and emotionally prepared. I'm sure I will run into closed minded people like you and Sean. Thank god for this discussion. Asia has been mystified as this foreign alien and culture for the longest for people to fetishize or crucify and needs saving. Asian Americans know this narrative well. Playing into it gets views but the natives should realize what they're doing to their image especially when how they view people abroad is rose coloured. Japanese content creators lately have been notorious for this. I've been looking into street interviews in Europe, latam and they keep it real and have a lot of pride in their own country and people despite ongoing wars, narco culture and so on. I suspect there's some curation of answers to generate rage bait for Asian content. I'm glad Jerry pointed out that Hollywood has been hyping up American men forever yet there's never been a concerted effort to "shatter the reality". No one else is held to such a high standard or treated as a monolith.

As an American The Korean Charm is a fad. We Americans go through this until we find a new and next best thing. We have gone through this with the Beetles, New Direction and countless others. The greats like Michael Jackson, Prince. Madonna ,Beyonce ,Taylor Swift is where we really live. Humans are visual and we appreciate the good looking Idols and the handsome men in Kdrama's but this alone will not keep the American interest for very long. Whats real is BTS who has won the hearts and imagination of Americans not because their ethnicity but hard work and pure talent. I've also notice that many successful relationship with Americans in Korea have or plan to moved to the US. Today, Americans are leaving and less are going. I've been there and my opinion is Korea is a nice place to visit but not the most desirable place to live unless your Korean.

From a psychological point of view it's actually quite easy to explain why content with a negative title gains a lot of attention: 1. Living beings are curious. When someone shares something with that kind of clickbaity thumbnail, most people's interest gets triggered - they want the details. They want to know if it's relatable. [That's why i usually avoid these like the plaque, i've got my own share of problems to take care of] 2. Others may get triggered to "defend" the content's subject. Like some toxic fandoms (or "cult followers") do, disregarding any justification. 3. It feeds the darker side of the consciousness to see other people struggle or experience bad things. While explaining certain issues and meeting them with constructive feedback is not only helpful but *necessary*, simply shitting on things like an attention whore is not. There's no other purpose behind it. And as such it should have no ground on the internet. Yet it grows, sadly, like a tumour.
