Exactly. The opening line of how he found himself in love is one of the great lead-ins. It draws you right in as the emotion he is feeling is projected into our minds.

I remember an Interview with Mark Hollis back in the late 80's. He explained his aim to write Songs that should stand the Test of time and still be listened to some 20 or 30 years later. And here we are 40 years later, still listening to these brillant Songs, written by an incredible songwriter and great human being. The world lost you far to early. RIP Mark

That performance at Montreux was amazing. I am amazed at how good most 80's bands sound live, especially Talk Talk, never expected them to be that good. The back vocals in "life is what you make it" are not great but they make you appreciate the lead vocal of Mark Hollis even more, they confirm that everything you are hearing is 100% live.

Thanks for sharing it! Mark Hollis is a god amongst men, he quit music at the top of his game after redefining two genres to spend time with his family. He sadly passed away a couple years ago.

Mark Hollis is such a unique songwriter and worth learning more about. His story and him as a human is that he's such an endearing soul that he earns all the respect he gets in the music community. Such a sad loss when he passed away but he will always be remembered for what he gave us through his music.

Talk Talk has been one of THE MOST thrilling bands I’ve ever gotten into! No joke, in my honest opinion they were the “Radiohead” of the 80s. Their radical evolution over a 5-album-span takes very similar bold risks. Their final two albums are in my top 10 albums of all time. Mind blowing stuff. HIGHLY RECOMMEND diving further into the genius of Talk Talk…

And I thought I was the only one seeing that. Talk Talk invented Post-Rock with the "Spirit of Eden" album long before it became a thing and Radiohead became one of the spearheads of this genre. But if ever Radiohead are the Talk Talk of modern times, not the other way around.

Mark Hollis is one of the biggest genius in modern music. The last 4 Talk Talk albums and his self-titled album Mark Hollis are delighful. He chose his family over his career and retired from making music when he was still quite young. He sadly died over 5 years ago at 54 from cancer :( I met him once on the London tube (subway). I sat next to him and told him his music made a huge impact on me when I was growing up. He seemed quite shy and said only 'thank you'.

I am old enough to have encountered the very same Talk Talk tour in Cologne/Germany in 1986. I was 20 years old and I was blown away. Their records, particularly „The Colour Of Spring“ were already on a complete different level than most of their contemporaries. But their live performances - that was my second Talk Talk concert back then - were even way beyond. They were not just replicating their studio versions. Every song a re-interpretation of themselves. And no sign that Mark Hollis wasn’t enjoying this. Will never forget.

I was there too, great concert and that album with the likes of Stevie Windwood playing organ on some tracks Morris Pert’s percussion and Mark Feltham’s harmonica take it to another level. You mention his son; he has now formed a band, Held By Trees, with musicians that worked on Talk Talk albums and Producer Phill Brown is also on board. There is a recent article in the Guardian which includes a piece on the band.

Awesome to see someone a long way from being around back then digging them, and to my amusement, freaking out at the percussion players watching each other in the days before auto timing and backing tracks. You said that the singer was "vibing" and he was, Mark Hollis ALWAYS immersed himself into every track that he sang or performed, and his "hair flips" which had nothing to do with his hair at all but rather just again vibing. At the risk of sounding like I've lost all sense of measure, I'll say that Talk Talk is probably one of the most creative and influential pop bands of the last 50 years. It helps that they helped create a whole subgenre of pop music (post-rock) and it's difficult to think of a band like Radiohead without Talk Talk existing first.

This performance came after they released their classic album "The Colour of Spring" which they were touring to support. That album employed a small army of percussionists, since the only members of the original band were the singer Mark Hollis, bassist Paul Webb, and drummer Lee Harris. This is significant, because Talk Talk was considered one of the many 80's "synth-pop" bands, and their keyboard player Simon Brenner left. Hollis was quoted as saying he didn't really like synthesizers, and that they'd been used for budgetary reasons, so the "Colour of Spring" album was a chance for the band to stretch and embrace a more organic sound than their earlier synth based hits like "Dum Dum Girl, Talk Talk, and this song, which was a fairly big hit for them and got a lot of MTV play". This is the reason there is an extended percussion jam in the middle of the song. One other thing about "It's my life" is that it was autobiographical and was a personal statement from Hollis about questioning his priorities as a musician. He would choose to eventually marry his girlfriend and start a family and retreat from fame and touring. So this is one reason there aren't a lot of recordings of Talk Talk live.

But they do have a similar part in the album they were actually touring in '86 (The Colour of Spring). Check out the song Living in Another World on that. It's my Life comes from the previous album named for this song. The bongo/congas part in Living in Another World starts around 3:35 and is played by Peter Gabriel's percussionist Morris Pert. I miss the 80's UK scene, so many good bands and solo acts. I hardly buy music now. Its got no longevity. This song still gets played in my home. Shame Mark had to leave this planet. Was a shock to the system when I see the news when it broke. RIP Mr Hollis.

You want to listen to Santana's live performance of Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock if you want to hear the grandaddy of all "bongo breakdowns."

This entire live set was pure. Talk Talk were as good performing live as they were when in the studio. Mark Hollis, a unique vocal talent. RIP

We oldies will always love the original version by Mark and Talk Talk. What a talent he was. Personally, the bass line on this song is as good as it gets.

My dear, I am a coeval of the people on that stage, and I have experienced that era of music. I happen to live across the river from where Mark Hollis was born 😁. In my early twenties in the eighties, I was dancing like crazy to this music in disco clubs. And let me tell you, most of today's pop music is cover versions of the previous five decades of music. I can hear at work what today's youngsters are producing and consuming, and it makes me sad that they don't make their own music instead they are just copying us. Oh, and bongo solos were normal in the late seventies and early eighties.

With the albums "Its my life" and "The colour of spring" they truly straddled the camps of artfulness, experimentation and accessibility into something that is pure genius. The Previous album had its moments but was a band stuck between finding themselves and doing what the label wanted, the last two they swerved hard into psychedelic chill artiness that is an acquired taste, not for everyone but as a progression of what they did before, it works, and I like it. Along with The Icicles Works and World Party, a band from the 80's that kind of made it to the edges of success... but... should have been way, way, way bigger.

It took me quite some years warm up to this song, and am amazed with its beauty...might I ask for a reaction to Lips Like Sugar, Bring on the Dancing Horses or The Killing Moon by Echo &the Bunnymen or Love My Way, Heaven, Ghost in You or Pretty in Pink by the Psychedelic Furs?

Good call on this one! If you want to hear more of Mark’s amazing voice, I can’t recommend Talk Talk’s “Natural History” compilation enough - it should be available on all the streaming services. Hope this finds you well. :)
