The decision they made to just abruptly end Ascension Day is so weird but so awesome. Love it!

they actually ran out of tape to record it on and it was supposed to be way longer

Laughing Stock is a big reason why 1991 is the best in year of music ever for me. Which is funny because it's not really because of the reasons that it gets a lot of praise from a more mainstream point of view, for releases such as Nevermind, Ten, Metallica's Black Album, U2s Achtung Baby... But because of albums like Laughing Stock, Loveless, Spiderland, The Low-End Theory, Blue Lines, Just For a Day, Gish, Green Mind etc

Up there with 1967 for sure

Achtung Baby is actually U2's own left turn masterpiece. It has elements of heavy layered funk, industrial, and less Americana theme.

I hope he reacts to The Colour of Spring as well, because it's absolutely a worthy album in their post rock trilogy. It's a transitional album between their new romantic pop and the post rock of Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock. It's a really stunning album

The godfather of post-rock. Listeing to this along side Brad really made me realize how essencial this was as a start of the genre and set a foundation of how grand things could get past this point

I'm so glad Brad got around to this one. I fell in love with this album earlier this year, I saw he reacted to Spirit of Eden and hoped that someone would donate for Laughing Stock (I can't because I'm broke lol). I'm so glad he liked it as much as I did. Just to add a bit to this, I first listened to it fully on a plane ride over Europe on like 1 hour of sleep. I was in such a hazy state that I looked out the window to see the sea and the sky meet with almost 0 horizon, just solid blue. I thought I died to this album... and I was totally okay with it being the soundtrack. Thanks to the guys running this channel for the repost!

note that when brad says he's seen a video of mark hollis singing ascension day, one doesn't actually exist; no music videos for this or spirit of eden were ever done and the last time the band toured was in 1986 for the colour of spring; the extensive arrangements and studio-built nature of these songs made touring them impractically expensive
@b1i95 ай бұрын
he didn't say he saw a video of Ascension Day, he said he saw a music video of him singing. it was probably the one for I Believe In You
@smidlem11175 ай бұрын
@@b1i9 well my point still stands then; i believe in you, being on spirit of eden, didn't have a music video made or any live performances to be filmed. the video that claims to be such on youtube is very clearly using the studio audio if you listen to it
@b1i95 ай бұрын
@@smidlem1117 it is a music video... most music videos use the studio audio, it's not a live performance. and i think mark said the label made him shoot this video and he regretted it later

Genuinely one of the most surprising listening experiences I've ever had. Since it's ranking so high on all music nerd sites I expected it to be good, but I didn't expect it to sound like THIS. It's so... I don't even know how to describe it. Like in one way it's just "super mature boring dad music," but there's this beautiful eeriness, and while the chord progressions and song progression in general is very coherent, it never LANDS anywhere, and it creates such a unique vibe.
@isaiahromero98617 сағат бұрын
Yea it's so otherworldly, it almost sounds apocalyptic to me but in a really beautiful and peaceful way, like music you'd hear as you're dying, there's still an undertone of darkness but it's so calming

I've been listening to music my whole life and I love so many things out there, BUT, this one gave me different sensations from all the music I've enjoyed in my entire life. It's not about enjoyment or pleasure, this album transcends and takes me to places I've never been before. My favourite album of all time. Period.
