The mom wasn’t killed she actually committed suicide but the demon was trying to get into her head thats why she kept telling her the opposite. At the end before Mia dies you can see she suddenly realized that it isn’t her mom she’s been listening to it was literally manipulating her the whole time.

Sorry for the length of this comment....totally understand if this isn't read!! But I've always wanted to point out that she very well may have started scratching at a locked door in a desperate attempt to - if not get actual help - at least get out of the room she was in when the effects were starting to begin. Real quick background for those unfamiliar with this topic....Most sleeping pills that people try to OD on are benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, Klonopin) or something that acts similarly to them (Ambien, Sonota, Lunesta/Immovane)....which, to make it easier to understand for people unfamiliar with them, their physiological effects are most similar to alcohol....relatively low doses tend to just relieve anxiety or make it easier to fall asleep, but higher benzodiazepine doses start creating a more alcohol-like sense of total contentment, difficulty balancing or speaking clearly (AKA slurring), except just with a much easier likelihood of memory blackouts than alcohol. With that being said now, I can only assume that whatever she took was something that may have a slower rate of absorption, and while she may have had a change of heart once she was intoxicated enough to not feel so hopeless anymore, but by then was in a state of "amnesic automatism," like the concept of someone being too drunk to realize they locked themselves in a room and too drunk to figure out how to unlock it. I mean it may sound rude, especially since Mia is FIRMLY convinced that the scratches under her mom's nails meant she tried to get help; but when you think about the reality that overdosing on sleeping pills causes the same "toxic confusional state" as alcohol poisoning, the truth is most likely that her mom had absolutely no idea what was going on once...it easily could have been either her trying to get help, or just wanted out of the room she was in at that moment but was already too impaired to figure out that the room was locked, or if not locked, just too impaired to open it. (As someone with a history of sedative/hypnotic addiction, this is a real thing) Okay totally done rambling....but I honestly feel like the fact that Mia told Riley all this -1) while a ghost was already attached to her; & 2) just 1 night before he got possessed - made it easy for the demon to enter the boy it "liked" and then say EXACTLY what it knew would impact Mia enough that she'd wanna prolong it just enough for it to grab a hold of Riley and drag him to hell. And when you realize how much emphasis was placed on the idea that the living body naturally expels the spirits overtime, that spirits get weaker the longer they stay in a living body, and the initial warning to Mia that "if you die while they're in you, they have you forever," I immediately realized it couldn't be the spirit of her real mom when she suggesting killing Riley to end his suffering, as that means the spirits would keep him forever. The spirit took advantage of her underlying hope that the mom either wanted to get help, or ODed accidentally, and used it to turn her against the one family member who did care and alienate her from her friends.

The "mother" that kept appearing to Mia was the drowned woman who appeared to her when she first tried the hand. That's why by the end the spirit was completely soaked in water. It was all imitation.

I went into this movie with little to no prior knowledge and low expectations and it blew me away. One of my absolute favorites of 2023. The more you see it and research it the better it gets too. Glad y’all liked it! Great reaction!

I believe Mia’s dad did die, I think he died in the hospital and as you see him get into the elevator the light is flickering UP, which symbolises him going to heaven while Mia is trapped somewhere else. If Mia’s dad was really alive and it’s him leaving the hospital then wouldn’t the light be flashing DOWN to go to the exit where exits are normally at hospitals? It’s a specific choice to have the light flashing UP. 💁🏻‍♂️

The dad didn’t die he was still alive when jade found him and off cam he was sent to hospital. That was just Mia seeing them recover and some time had past because Riley was better and her dad was also good. It was just her getting sent to the other side and became one of those dead people.

@@jasmineaugustin3879 Yeah I believe he died in hospital, and him walking into the elevator going UP is him going to heaven. Why would the elevator be flashing UP 🤷‍♂️ unless there are hospitals where you have to go UP first in order to Exit 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ doesn’t make sense really. I live here in Australia 🇦🇺 and no hospital I’ve ever been to makes you go UP first.

Some trivia for you. The brothers who made this saw someone convulsing after taking drugs at a party. Instead of helping, everyone stood around recording on their phones. The brothers were also offered a Hollywood budget but turned it down in place of full creative control. The Kangaroo is CGI. Because Sia is from South Australia where this movie was made, she let them use her song.

It was salvia trips back in the early 2000's. It was pretty much exactly this. There use to be hundreds of videos of people tripping on salvia on youtube but its since been removed. One guy jumped through his screen door and off his deck. Some eople just lay there screaming off the top of their lungs.

Mia's dad, (Max) didn't die. Neither did Duckett"s brother. Mia either took herself out or Jade pushed her. Mia clued on that the spirit presenting her Mum wasn't really her when she said, "We'll have him forever." Remember, whenever Mia saw her Mother, you could hear the water, like when the drowned lady appeared. Also, the toe sucking spirit was the horny one that Daniel let in at Jade's house. It does take a couple of watches to notice certain things because there are multiple layers to this film. It's fun watching people react and figure stuff out. The twins who made this movie went to school with my daughter and it was filmed where I grew up which is pretty cool.

For the longest time I thought Mia killed herself, but on another reaction someone said if you slow the part of the movie down enough you can see Jade pushing Mia

I like the subtle clues in the film that they mention the girl’s boyfriend is a Christian and all the spirits hate him and mess with him during the film, which is a clue the spirits were really demons from hell.

I don't think the Dad lived. If you focus on the elevator signal, it was pointed up, like he was going to heaven.

Dude. I don't know what movie you were watching, but your theory on just about everything in this film is way off. Riley wasn't attacked because of how long he was in. It was because the spirits wanted his soul. Mia said that in her first sitting. "They like you," and if you die while they still possess you, they keep your soul. Refer to the first reading of the rules when Mia goes under. So when the little girl spirit shows Mia where Riley is being tortured by the spirits, it is actually happening. Also Mia's mother did commit suicide but the spirits were manipulating her and her mothers suicide was an easy weakspot. That is why the spirits are appearing to Mia as her father and dead mother and try to convince her that Riley first needs saving then needs to die. Note when Mia's mother says something like "release him, and he will be ours forever." That was when Mia realised she was being manipulated and threw herself into traffic instead of Riley. Eventually, the spirits grip on Riley weakened, and he was released from the hospital. Mia eventually sees the candlelight and makes contact with a new group of people this time in Greece. Presumably, with the second hand that was being talked about earlier in the movie.
