However the minimoog was the start then the moog source was the second , the electro voice 1823M was the driver that was used in the electro harmonic golden throat box. After all that it’s the amp being used that is the secret oh believe. Rodger Troutman is forever the Man. And now it’s Mr. Talk Box

I've got an old Dean Markley Talk Box that I used back in the day. I think it has a 100 watt driver in it. It still works great to this day. Never tried it with a keyboard but would love too cause I love that whole Roger thing he did. I did have the Roland Vocoder for other talking effects but that Roger effect is very cool.

Great stuff! Your talkbox sounds amazing. I am trying for years to create that same talkbox sound by finding the right synth patch but can't quite figure it out. Can't find a good video on youtube that explains in detail how to program the right sound to send into the talkbox. You mentioned that you use a saw wave synth mixed with a square wave synth. Can you give more detail on that? A sound example would be really helpful. Like how the actual patch sounds, not only through the talkbox but maybe through your speakers. It would also be great to know how you program your mod wheel. Like what parameter it triggers to get the sound that you are getting. Thanks a lot for any help on this

I use mine (mxr m222) with hardware synths and Logic AU virtual instruments. It is quite easy to do. Although it is useful to have an assignable alternative "output" on your soundcard. If using logix (for example), rig up your midi setup as you would for any "normal" project. Then, creat a separate "Bus". Call it "talkbox out" for ease. route that "Talbox out" Bus to a spare output. It must be different from that of your main studio monitor out. Now, lets assume you want to use "Omnisphere". Load up Omnisphere, then in the mixer, change the routing so rather than it going to your studio monitors (Stereo out), you select the bus you created called "talkbox out". Bingo, you're done. play your controller stick the pipe in your mouth and have fun. To record, you'll need to have a microphone placed a few inches aay from your mouth. Remember it is the pipe that contains the sound and your mouth shapes it. That is what you want to capture, so the only way is by a microphone. Have fun :)

Hey man, great video. I have a reoccurring problem of finding the sweet spot for the tube. I have it on the right side of my mouth between my molars. if its not my cheek interrupting the syllables than its my tongue. Any tips?
@IceBoxSound8 жыл бұрын
hmmm... it took me a while to get that perfect placement, i would say keep practicing and find the perfect placement yourself because every mouth is different, the way your teeth are or the way your tongue is can affect the placement of the tube, but don't worry i've had trouble with that for at least a year. it took me not long more than 2-3 years to be able to have all my letters and syllables clean !

@IceBoxSound7 жыл бұрын
thanks a lot ! im glad it helped you ! i do bite on it, not a lot so i dont block the sound, but not loose enough to come out on its own, just hard enough to be able to keep it there without it sliding out every couple of seconds ! good luck !

yeah, exactly that's what i thought was difficult but i've gotten better at it now biting just enough so the tube isn't blocked. Cool, thanks!

Great little tutorial. I have an MXR m222 talkbox, I'm just getting started. I know how to rig up a talkbox plus have an array of synths too. Can I ask, for another tutorial, can you go into more detail about prepping and postioning the pipe please. I admit, I'm new to this, but mine is kind of uncomfortable for long periods, my tongue gets in the way and yeah, I can dribble sometimes too haha. I've heard that boiling the pipe can soften it. Is this true and how long to boil if so? Also, does the volume coming out of the talkbox make much difference? just curious on that btw. Thanks again and keep up the great work. Give some Teddy Riley (as in Blackstreet) examples too. I recon youd do a great "Don't Leave" :)

My tongue keeps blocking the tube. How do you avoid that? And you have to actually pronounce the "s" "sh" etc. right?
@IceBoxSound7 жыл бұрын
yes, you do have to pronounce that, the trick is time, in the beginning my tongue used to always block the tube until i practiced not to, its hard to explain but it's normal in the beginning, you need to keep playing with the tube until you find that sweet spot where nothing gets in the way of the sound. good luck !

@Ashad20125 жыл бұрын
You have a good understanding of how a talkbox works and how to get the Roger sound what you lack is the musical feel that Roger had. Everything you do has a certain awkward feel about it. Not sure if it's how you hold the vocal notes or what you play on the keyboard but it always feels close but not right. It's almost like a bass player playing the right notes but playing them to slow, it changes the feel of what's going on. If you can get that right then you would be able to do California Love and other ZAPP songs.
@IceBoxSound5 жыл бұрын
Honestly im not trying to sound like roger or want to do zapp's music i think they are over played by talkboxers it was a video i made a while ago for teaching purposes if you listen to my other videos you'll find the "feel" that you are talking about but of course in my own way

Hi there ! Your video is really great bro ! Anw i have 1 things considering.. it's the microphone . Your mouth changes the sound of the keyboard right , but the sound still comes out from the keyboard right ? so why you need the mic for because the sound doenst come out from your mouth, that's why i dont know what is the purpose of the mic here ? pls reply me thank you .
@IceBoxSound8 жыл бұрын
hello, the sound comes out of the keyboard... it goes into the talkbox through the Tube, the sound comes out of the tube into my mouth and i shape the words, the microphone is used here so i can have a better sound recording quality than the microphone's camera. there is no difference when singing with the voicebox or your real voice, whenever you need a microphone for your real voice you will need a microphone for your talkboxsound. the Sound comes OUT OF MY MOUTH NOT THE KEYBOARD ! i will make a video soon explaining the very few basics on HOW to talkbox. hope this helps !

Have fun :) The type of "sound" is what is called a "saw wave". It is a very "buzzy" type sound. Don't try using fancy patches or pads, yet anyway. Just a bog standard saw wave.

The microphone is a Shure SM57. You can get away with a sure SM58 though. As for mic stands, this type is called a "Boom Microphone stand". Beyerdynamic, Senheiser, Hercules and many other brands around. It depends upon budget. The main thing, for comfort though, is to get a "Boom Microphone stand"

Can you has this clean sound with a guitar connected to talkbox? I'm trying using my Boss SY-300 (guitar synth, with sawtooth sinewave) with my guitar and talkbox but still it sounds not so good like it sounds with keyboard. I'm not sure if it's because of the guitar signal is a bit different or i am pretty bad at this (with keyboard i got a good patch but still i'm far away with the sound so clean like you)
@IceBoxSound7 жыл бұрын
i've never used mine with a guitar but i'm pretty sure the keyboard will always sound cleaner, clearer and better! i am not using any special patch just a sawtooth wave, but the clarity has to do with the EQ on your amp and the way you play/shape the words, every little detail counts when trying to sound better! hope this helps
