WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Community service is slavery. Valerie is floundering because slavery has not been abolished, all of us have been turned into slaves to the industrial system of the world order. The fact that the fence is far enough so that we do not see it every day, does not mean that it is not there. We are all property of the people who OWN the governments.

The co-host on the left (our left) makes an entirely valid and fascinating point when he asks the caller why she hasn't read the entire Bible. She claims to have been a fully committed believer for a decade... quite long enough for her to have studied and read every word of what she claims is her god's instructions to her and to the human race. In her entire lifetime she has only read "most of it". This is incredible, but is also true of virtually all the so-called Christian 'believers' I have ever met. Like Valerie, I have only read most of the Bible and not all of it, but I have read far more than the vast majority of Christians and I have never considered it to be anything more than mythology, and fairly boring and uninteresting in many places. As a child I read stories from European mythology voraciously. I read Homer and the stories of the ancient Greeks, the Norse, and the various mythological traditions of the British Isles, and enjoyed them all. Only later in life, when I studied history and got interested in why people believe in religions, did I read much of the Christian Bible but I have never regarded stories about Yeshua ben Ioseph as being any more relevant to me than the stories of the great Hibernian/Caledonian hero Fionn. Slavery is clearly endorsed and sanctioned in the OT, as is genocide, child murder, rape, and almost any vile and cruel practice you care to name. Anyone who takes their morality from this book of horrors has something seriously wrong with them.

@David Anewman While you're technically correct that Republicans were anti-slavery during the Civil War. That's not something modern day Republicans rightly get to claim credit for. The parties switched platforms during the 60s and 70s, meaning modern conservative Republicans are descended from pro-slavery Democrats and modern liberal Democrats from anti-slavery Republicans. That's why you have so many baby boomers that switched part when they were younger. I really wish Republicans would stop using that argument. They aren't fooling anyone with it except themselves.
@canamrock
@canamrock 5 жыл бұрын
@David Anewman Emphasis on 'little'. What were eventually the Democratic and Republican parties in the various states in the late 1800s and early 20th century were regionalized and not monolithic. While the southern Democratic party was in fact involved with the KKK and worked to undo Reconstruction's protections for the freed slaves, there were major realignments over the decades. After the Civil Rights Act, the '70s secured the shift that the forces that were Democrats in the South switched over rather fully in the national tier, and statewide flipped more slowly due to factors like preserving seniority power from their positions. Anyone who tries to claim seriously the Southern Strategy and larger realignments is so ahistorical there's no point in even trying to discuss things since there is foundational groundwork on that side to even begin to work in good faith forward.

The potential for biblical slavery to be in any way justifiable goes out the window when you get to the bit about the slave owner not being punished if they beat their slave and they don't immediately die as a result of the beating. If my boss was to do that, it would be felony assault, even though I chose to work for him and am free to quit whenever I choose. Not that slavery itself is equivalent to paid and voluntary employment but even if you want to interpret biblical slavery in the most kind and generous way possible, that bit makes it immoral.

Just finished watching Valerie tell Matt she'd accept being his slave as per Exodus 21 and him telling her to head over to Talk Heathen and then saw the link to this vid in my recommendations feed. Had to come and watch - call it "Morbid Curiosity" if you will... She acknowledges that there are different types of slavery in the bible and says she's fine with *two* of them. What's left unsaid is what she thinks of buying foreign slaves and passing them on to your children as inherited property or of the fact that if you give a wife to your slave, the wife (and any resulting children) doesn't/don't go free with the slave or the fact that if the slave wants to remain with his wife and child(ren) you can permanently mark him so he's now yours for life or that girls can be bought and sold as sex slaves - because then she would have to admit that these things are immoral - and, by extension, cast doubts on the "morality" of the two forms of slavery she's OK with. She seems completely untroubled that the bible permits the owning of human beings and yet thinks that prostitutes, homosexuals and people who fornicate outside wedlock are morally wrong.

But a religion from a perfect God would not need adjustments or interpretations. It would be perfectly designed and easy understood. No religion has done this. Most large religions have huge disputes over interpretation.

I personally believe that a requisite for becoming/claiming to be an adherent to any religion is the full reading of the doctrine and scriptures. Valerie admits to not having read the full text of the Bible, but also claims it as inspired scripture; how would she know since she hasn't read the whole thing? This is the results of a religion that is fundamentally based on ignorance; Don't question your pastor. Don't question the Lord. Don't question anything around you. Just mindlessly accept and believe what you are told and dress it up as 'having faith.'

@AC-gb7do
@AC-gb7do 5 жыл бұрын
Sexual slavery, or being sold to be a ‘wife’, was common in the ancient world. Throughout the Old Testament, the taking of multiple wives is recorded many times. An Israelite father could sell his unmarried daughters into servitude, with the expectation or understanding that the master or his son could eventually marry her (as in Exodus 21:7-11.) It is understood by Jewish and Christian commentators that this referred to the sale of a daughter, who "is not arrived to the age of twelve years and a day, and this through poverty." *The penalty if an Israelite engaged in sexual activity with an unredeemed female slave who was betrothed was that of scourging, with Jewish tradition seeing this as only referring to the slave (versus Deuteronomy **22:22**, where both parties were stoned, being free persons), as well as the man confessing his guilt and the priest making atonement for his sin.* Women *captured* by Israelite armies could be adopted as ‘wives’, but first they had to have their heads shaved and undergo a period of mourning. (Deuteronomy 21:10-14) However, "If you are not pleased with her, then you must let her go where she pleases. You cannot in any case sell her; you must not take advantage of her, since you have already humiliated her."

Here is one verse, "Leviticus 25:44 44"'Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves.". Jesus told slaves to obey their masters 'for this is right. ' Really Valery?
@AC-gb7do
@AC-gb7do 5 жыл бұрын
Female Hebrews could be sold by their fathers and enslaved for life (Exodus 21:7-11). Non-Hebrews, on the other hand, could (according to Leviticus 25:44) be subjected to slavery in exactly the way that it is usually understood. The slaves could be bought, sold and inherited when their owner died. This, by any standard, is race- or ethnicity-based, and Leviticus 25:44-46 explicitly allows slaves to be bought from foreign nations or foreigners living in Israel. It does say that simply kidnapping Hebrews to enslave them is a crime punishable by death (Deuteronomy 24:7), but no such prohibition exists regarding foreigners. War captives could be made slaves, assuming they had refused to make peace (this applied to women and children - men were simply killed), along with the seizure of all their property (Deuteronomy 20:10-15). Hereditary slaves were born into slavery and there is no apparent way by which they could obtain their freedom. Yup, slavery is great kids!
