The "rock stone" Bob is talking about is the place in which he would go and meditate in Nine Mile where he grew up.

@@JasonJonas-mz9kgYou sound pretty close to that geographic dimension. Thanks for sharing that. But I personally always thought he was referring to, and describing the life and endurance experiences of people protesting against injustice and oppression. For that reason, cold ground for a bed and rock for a pillow came to mean the conditions in a jail cell. Note that he goes further to say, “I’ve been down on the rock for so long. I seem to wear a permanent zmmmmm” Don’t know that last word but he also seems to use it to mean or describe a frown, and I think he definitely used it to also refer to the wailing and humming you hear in blues music. “Talking blues…” Meaning the oppression conditions he’s fighting against in this song and numerous others. He extends the impression that he and other freedom fighters are not scared of jail. Freedom is worth the pain: “Who’s gonna stay at home when the freedom fighters are fighting”, and “the preacher is lying.” Overall I think he seems to be saying we’ve been oppressed for so long that fighting must continue and jail (cold ground and rock) can’t stop freedom fighters. Just my thoughts. Anyway, this song became our signature in the thick and thin of our protests against government oppression among friends and members of the Civil Liberties Organization. It was a permanent feature at the beginning and end of every protest march, every discussion session. We suffered all kinds of mistreatment. Some of my very close friends ended up in jail. But we succeeded in kicking the military out of office after many years. Yet the fight continues even now. Bob didn’t leave. He’s on vacation.

@@IzokhaiOlumhense You actually knew the meaning of the song before you claimed you didn't, but only for that fellow to almost mislead you with his lie and simplistic interpretation of it. This song is a poem. In a nutshell, it is about focusing on what matters most, irrespective of naysayers' dissuasion. If you are already down (cold ground was my bed), what else can you lose by fighting on (rock being your pillow). He had been so down that it shows in his physique (I wear a permanent screw), so he must grab the bull by the horn and dare it to do its worse (stare in the sun and let the rays shine in my eyes). It would be cowardice to not fight on if others in your shoe are fighting (who's gonna be home when the freedom fighters are fighting), do not let organized religion fool you into capitulation because religion is also a weapon of oppression when in the hand of evil men (I feel like bombing a church, now that the preacher is lying). And so on and son.... Bob Marley was a genius.

Finish the line Gayle Clayton. Know that you know the preacher is lying. Brother Bob knew the truth and he didnt like seeing people enslaved by lies. You want peace? Prepare for war. The greatest lie ever told was the bible and its kept you and every woman born in the last 2000 years shackled to adams rib and Eve's so called terrible sin. You want to be angry? Good, you should be pissed. Just not at Bob.
