I never target trained my cat. He just watched me press the button. He was highly play motivated. So every time I pressed play I played with him. I did it many times each day. Admittedly it took him a while to be able to push the buttons but he knew to put his paw on it. Then he started biting the buttons to activate them. Eventually he realized he had to put pressure on the buttons. Now he is an old pro and has 32 buttons and uses them appropriately. I’m behind in adding new buttons. He has a very large vocabulary. I never had to purposely teach him words. He already knew what they meant from just talking to him.

This was a recommended short and I subbed, thanks! My parents had a 10+ year old outdoor cat who didn't let anyone touch him. Within a month of my sitting with him, he was climbing into my lap and in 2 months he could do 3 circles and sit. I hadn't read or seen anything on cat training...it just seemed like common sense to me to be patient and allow him his boundaries. I miss him. His name was Pals.

Usually is a good rule of thumb to let cats innitiate play, pets and other activities. They are independent animals but with great social habilities... observation really helps!

I saw somewhere that the resistance to bathing has something to do with discomfort in the paws? A suggestion was to place a towel in the tub to put the cat on. I didn't research it further so I don't really know but that stuck with me. Also to protect their ears if blowdrying because it's extremely loud. Cheers!

@TheScandoman

Yes, you can always talk to your cat! It's understanding your cat that is the challenge! Please be careful to NOT teach your cats that all buttons are for getting food...or pets...or food AND pets! ALSO, Billi is a 14 year-old female who started buttons at 11; has mainly been a solo cat with a same human.

It's quite normal. Your cat has learned to communicate with you (even if you find it annoying, they do it because, most likely, it works). While your cat would probably be very good at learning to speak using buttons, I can assure you that when they learn to use the buttons, they won't stop!

He obviously never had a cat that uses the buttons and I doubt he has a patient who does. My cat has over 60 at the moment. When I got her, she was three years old and had to leave her home because her owner had developped a severe cat allergy. She didn't know I had saved her from the shelter, for her I was the evil catnapper and she hated me. We got our buttons in April 2021, but she ignored me trying to teach her. Instead of her my little daycare poodle started using them. Nine months later, when she still didn't use them I finally learned about target training her to press with her paw. At the time she still was hating me, biting me regularily and quite severe, keeping her distance etc. The moment she knew how to press, she started talking. In sentences, meaning two or three words at a time, which is advanced. This was in January 2022. Her whole demeanour changed. She asked for brush, pets and play, thus starting to interact more with me in a peaceful manner. She stopped watching me, biting me and started liking me. In Mai 2022 we moved into a new flat. It took her a week to start using her buttons again (they stop for a while when there are major changes in their lives) and then her first words were: Minou happy, happy! She now tells me she loves me a couple of times each day, says she is happy very often and mad when I don' t give her more food 😁 Our whole relationship is 1000% better and she is a genuinly happy cat. I have owned cats since 1983, all rescues. I know how to bide my time and give them room, can read their body language and do speak cat, but I never had such a relationship with a cat before. Not even with the one that was found in the dumpster, four days old and hand raised by me. Giving them the ability to advocate for themselves is a gift and how anyone can say it gives them anxiety is beyond me! How could it, when my cat can tell me what she wants and when and what she doesen't want. She has a NO button that she sometimes uses. She has all the body parts and 'ouch' to tell me when she is ill, which she already did. I was able to administer painkillers after she had knocked her head very nasty on the faucet and complained about head ouch still an hour later. I can bring her to the vet when she tells me she is poorly.... How can that increase her anxiety???? You should dump the quack, get a new vet and start your button journey😻

Hi, I have an orange cat (1 year old female) who absolutely hates traveling in the car, and I have tried putting some treats in, going slowly taking breaks whenever she starts shouting, letting her explore the car before starting it for a while, and yet within 2-3 minutes of starting she invariably starts shouting and getting scared. Then she usually perches up between the middle two seats, looking backward, yelling scared continuously... PLEASE HELP CAT GOD! I have not tried putting a cage inside the car, I have several restrictions in the types of treats available in my area, so I have not tried giving her special dedicated treats inside the car either...also because I don't know which ones.
