Only Letterman has the mental and conversational skill to trip up Seinfeld. I've never seen Seinfeld lose his footing in a conversation. That "What???" when Letterman confuses Jerry is one of my favorite parts of this interaction.

@@katc5051 So many guests are about pushing their book, movie, etc. (yawn) and the producers' pre-interview get questions which will have canned, stale answers. But when they go off script, that's when Dave's wit is at its best and he engages, rather than just catatonically pitching softballs. And when he's happy, the show percolates.

I always thought Jerry was super corny and just avoided his stand-up and shows. I’m an Always Sunny in Philly fan, decided to try Seinfeld again on a whim and quickly realized THAT was the genesis (or one of them at least) of that style of show. It blew my mind how clever and well-written the characters were. That made me pay more attention to Jerry and now I’m of the opinion the dude is a rare comedic genius. I don’t use that word lightly either…his observations on human behavior are fascinating and you can tell the dude studies people and how they act. His Comedians in Cars show is really no different, he just knows how to appeal to certain type of people and their humor

You were right the first time, Seinfeld is a shallow superficial unfunny douchebag and David Letterman is just as shallow and phony as Seinfeld. Two of the biggest a-holes in all of teevee history. I think that the key reason that coffee and cars works is because it is Jerry Seinfeld. Jerry is naturally funny, disarming and has an infectious laugh. And, you can tell that he likes to laugh. So he's always going to see humorous side of things. He's also good at constructing a comedic story. I think that is why he enjoys the editing process so much. He likes taking all of the raw footage and crafting the final product.

Roger Edgerton An entire episode about masterbation wasn’t pushing the envelope? What? Maybe you weren’t alive back then, but many Seinfeld stories were very risqué at the time they aired. Seinfeld may have chosen not to work blue on his sitcom but his character was definitely obsessed with sex, he even mentions on an episode how he’s gotten women pregnant, yet he has no kids (I’m sorry, those records are permanently sealed), implying abortion. If you look at what was acceptable to say on network tv in the ‘90’s, Seinfeld constantly pushed the envelope, although they did it in a subtle way to get around the censors.

Letterman is prolly the best among the talk show hosts lot. He doesn't overindulge his guests nor does he slight them, He maintains control of the conversation in a positive way, bringing the best out of his guests, while not depending on gimmicks and keeping the humor healthy. Unlike his contemporaries such as Leno, he's never been flamboyant or loud. He's always been crisp and witty, without an ounce of insecurity. Can't think if any current talk show hosts can fill his shoes. He's truly one of his kind.

@@n0tk0sher Even if he did slight people, which he certainly did, it was always very quick witted and comedically acerbic jabbing. Also his show was irreverent and sardonic in nature. Much more in the first two decades but it was always askew. Always trying to keep the audience on its toes. If anyone had a slightly similar show, Conan, it was mostly a carbon copy of the Letterman blueprint. Everyone else was pandering to celebrities. Like Leno and certainly the unwatchable Fallon. Carson was the standard and Letterman turned it upside down and created something unique and fresh. For my money Letterman was the best to ever do it.

13:00 Bob Einstein says the classic "we´ll do anything for a laugh", wich I think is common on great comedians, that humility. It´s not anything for a laugh, is certain things from within the comedian´s soul. A sort of catharsis of bringing out something that worries you and using it to express your humor, and building a bridge to others. It is a good healing tool for conflicted souls, of course on bearing the soul, that leaves you vulnerable. But when it works, and that bridge to the audience is solid I would imagine it to be magical.

If I ever wondered if I like Jerry Seinfeld- this answers the question. He would be a wonderful guy to have a cup of coffee with- on any day, in any weather- anywhere. He's genuinely funny, he loves the scenario, he relishes the discomfort and he really, really laughs at very funny people. I love that he laughs so hard and so sincerely so easily. He reminds me of some of my very best friends and we could be friends if circumstances allowed for it. 12 to 15 minutes, a trip, a car and an excuse to get together. Perfect.

100% agree with Jerry about when physically moving the brain dissects the situation and comes up with the most accurate answer! I prefer to be up on my feet pacing when taking intimate phone calls with family and friends, as well as, most business calls!

They felt it had run its course and I agree. They went out gracefully. Plus it allowed Larry David to make his show Curb Your Enthusiasm which is just as good, imo. Better in some ways. It is an outstanding, bust yer gut funny show.

But Jerry was actually wrong in a sense. It's worked out better than one would hope for a show like this but five minutes really is tops...some say even less IF he wants the younger audiences and IF he wants to be a success in the sense that everyone's talking about it. Now, I'm not saying that would be better. I grew up on Seinfeld so I am perfectly happy with 20-30 mins. But in the age of Snapchat and Instagram Stories....well, we can see why he's not gaining any new audiences (without seeing the analytics, I can bet his audience is still mostly from the Seinfeld generation).

+temudgin62 I overall agree with your comment & I'd like to extend that thought one more step. Fuck the millennials! (InstaSnapTweetFacePinshits Generation) Statistics show us as much as 91% of them are still at home, have no significant expendable cash & are actually causing the 18-30yr olds to no longer be the prime target demographic. So, for what it's worth, Jerry may actually be ahead of the curve & KZbin & other's "5 minute firewall" theory will be wasted. Peace

temudgin62 you're confusing content with social media. Instagram stories are so beyond irrelevant to this, The generation you're talking about is the podcast generation. I'll sit and watch 2 hours of Letterman or Norm MacDonald, granted that's not the media diet of most people my age but the actual consumption is. Seinfeld's not getting a new audience because his comedic sensibility is a little dated, and he probably alienates a lot of people my age with his anti-PC stuff.

It's funny, I always felt the InstaSnapTweetFacePinshits (great combo by the way xD) were the people like 5-10 years younger than millennials. Technically I am a millennial though I really don't feel like one as they're usually described. I had a childhood without google and social media, so I'm not obsessed with it...at all. I'm not glued to my phone, its the younger folks who are teenagers now who always had that in the zeitgeist that I worry about! But anyway, I like the longer content, podcasts, interviews and such are the most interesting content to me. An hour long one on one or actor roundtable type of interview is pretty much the most fun I have on KZbin haha. Also 10-20 min video game content as well. I really don't know where the 5 minute or less thing comes from. Not like I watch really unpopular things...Hmm.

I love the show... It is so fluid unique... It's like a simple process of painting... You don't want to overdo it... Have fun with it a little bit of character... Emphasis on a color being the subject.. and that's it no stress stress-free no anxiety anxiety free a complete art piece. And of course there will be other art pieces similar but different but the most unique ones that stand out.... Would be very hard to duplicate!

I’ve heard Jerry talk about the point that comedians are a different species a lot. And that only they relate to each other, and thats why the show works etc. Dave diasgrees in this interview. ”It’s just friends talking”. What do you lot think??

All J.Seinfield needed was Seinfield. If I were him, I'd stop right there. The show was Legendary. The show IS Legendary. He doesn't need anything. He became a Legend in one season. I'd just sit on that money and chill. Nothing will ever top Seinfield either way. Larry David created a monster. If I were Jerry, I'd let that be that. I'd be known of being.."Jerry". Nothing wrong with being the best. I really wouldn't worry. Nothing will ever top anything on NBC like Seinfield.
