If you notice, there’s no amps or monitors on stage, everyone had to wear gray, no bottles of water or anything, even the chrome mic and percussion stands were spray painted matte black as well as the keyboards. David Byrne wanted just the musicians and instruments on stage and literally everything else had to blend into black and white. It’s a pretty genius concept for 1984 right when big stage shows and pyro was starting to take over.

It was a half hour after the show was supposed to start, and we were pressed against the front of an empty stage. We were saying crap, they still have to set up the equipment! Haha! The rest is history.

And then Byrne managed to take this concept to the limit on American Utopia,, with identical suits and a totally empty stage.

When I grew up, this is what I listened to, nonstop, but only now watching you two watch the film do I really appreciate again how genius this is. I think Slippery People might be my favorite Talking Heads song. The lyrics are alright, but it's the back and forth and musical development that just are on another level. Whenever I hear this song I keep singing it for at least a day. "Bup-bup-bap-baaaap-bap-put-ba-bap-buppup.....". Also, David's mom is nice, and David used to babysit for a friend of mine, guitar and all. Everyone in the band brings so much and that's also a testament to Byrne's leadership. I only clued in recently to the idea that he wrote the music first and added lyrics later. This makes so much of their songs make more sense. He's a great lyricist, but he's a genius arranger/composer. It's always the music that carries you.

filmed over four nights, and edited down to feel like one show. one of my favorite songs by them. the way there is a whole little "conversation" between front vocals and back vocals, a serious call-and-response moment under a microscope -- "what's the matter with him?" "ah, he's alright." "how do you know?" "the lord won't mind." "don't play no games." "he's alright. Love from the bottom to the top." -- these days i wonder if David was writing about his autism, how people seem to react to him. it's open-ended enough that it could be about many situations though. there's a whole verse that opens up, "put away that gun -- this part is simple. try to recognize -- what is in your mind." this whole track endlessly fascinates me, and it keeps having new meanings as i get older.

WOWOWOWOWOOWOWOWOWOWOWOW!!!!!!!!!!! I grew up in Western NY. I took my then-girlfriend and future ex-wife (great taste in music, terrible taste in men ;-) ) to see this tour when they rolled through Rochester, NY. They played the War Memorial, but couldn't sell it out,. So they threw up a curtain halfway across the floor and limited the tickets to 5,000 people. Yes. I saw the Stop Making Sense tour with fewer than 5k people in a small city arena. Oh...my...goodness. I never had so much fun in my life. Maybe the best concert I ever saw. Imagine 5k people high, dancing, and having a great time under general admission - which meant a clear dancefloor from the stage to the edge of the floor/ring. no opening act. Just the T-Heads with the Tom Tom Club as an intermission....playing the Genius of Love. Holy shit. I've never danced that long in my life.

That’s exactly it. They mixed video from performances over 3 or 4 nights so they had to maintain tempos across each night so Chris would listen to a metronome before each song so they could intersperse video and audio from various nights into one song

Acording to the biography of the band , animosity was creaping in prior to the movie. Tina wnted her sisters on as backing singers and Byrne was writing lyrics to tapes sent him in the post. They were hardly on speaking terms.

They hd n interesting way of splitting royalties. They each voted points to other members Re: input into a song, but could not vote for themselves.

great band but ex art school.. stop making sense = good starter lesson for any band on how a show can be put together.. wearing GREY because the stage theme is black and white .. all the drum hardware etc. has been sprayed black >> lighting with mostly white light (a very few colour gels were used.) going for shadows and texture.. you need to watch the WHOLE show .. As at the start.. it is an empty stage Then david b. enters with just an acoustic guitar .rolling risers of kit are then added. As to the the grim dancing.. their choreographer was Toni Basil known for "hey mickey" and also the film Easy Rider
