@flitsertheo
@flitsertheo Жыл бұрын
You'll need way more shelf space if you build them. Boxes can be stacked, models not. The solid box becomes an unwieldy, fragile piece of plastic that gathers a lot of dust. Which will irritate your partner(s) and receive unwanted attention of kids and other pets.
@ardshielcomplex8917
@ardshielcomplex8917 Жыл бұрын
The problem is that once a model build is completed it needs storage space, and then its fragile, that's why its more sense to keep them waiting for "the build one day" in their impressive box art original storage.

I've sold most of my stash. Now I only have 3 kits at a time. One I'm currently building, one I'm planning to build next so I could start buying the supplies (paint, decals, etc) and one for the future. In my case, when I had a huge stash, I was always making excuses to start a new kit instead of finishing the ones I had already started. Now I only buy a new kit when I finish one. A good tip if you have some money burning in your pocket is to buy a new tool (airbrush, pliers, etc) instead of buying a new kit. Good tools last forever.

There was a piece on a morning TV show, here in the UK a couple of weeks ago, about modelling & how it's boomed since the 2020 lock down, a lot of people were stuck at home with nothing to do & decided to revisit the hobby they did as children, it's great for the hobby, the more the merrier because that will get manufacturers making & more & more new kits, which in turn will make my stash increase in size 😉

Aircraft all era, ships, trucks, motorcycles, figures. Just not resin, cannot handle that so I do not buy it. Also me sometimes just open the box...look into it...fiddle with the sprues...close it again and back into the stash. Good to see I have more fellow modelers with the same way of enjoying the hobby. I do know a guy who just collects kits and doesn't build them . He even has a Holy Grail list . I think most of us have stashes that get out of control . When I get interested in something , I want to learn as much as I can . Happened with bird watching and native plant gardening ( I'm actually a good hole digger with a lot of books) . When I got back to modeling in 2015 after 28 years away , there were so many new kits available . My modeling is tied to my history interests. When I got interested in WWII Soviet armor or WWII North African vehicles (including jerricans) I did a lot of book and internet research . As the knowledge increased , I would see an out of the ordinary kit and snatch it up . Younever know, might be hard to find it later . 😉

G'day Chris, About 2-3 years ago I saw a video made by an elderly modeller from some part of New York who, by the way, had a great New York accent right out of Central Casting. He said in that video that his wife had actually come up with the acronym S.A.B.L.E. I was deeply impressed as I thought it was so clever and so very true. Without his permission, I started using S.A.B.L.E. in many of my modelling comments and in emails to fellow modellers. I'm really glad you've confronted this topic as, I reckon, it applies to the majority of kit modellers. I only ever bought one kit/built it and bought the next when I was a young lad and my 'stash of one' was directly connected to the amount of my pocket money. When I planned to come back to the hobby, about 10-years ago, my very first thought was that I had to buy the modern tools and consumables I'd need and, far more importantly, I needed to establish a 'stash'. The thought of buying just a handful of kits and beginning to build never entered my head. I actually spent nearly 4 years buying kits. While doing this I started watching modelling videos on KZbin; picking up on all the new techniques and studying how much more complex models had become. After I spent time and money buying a couple collections of paints; I'd pull out a small kit and did it for practice and to test something I'd seen another modeller do in a video. So, Chris, what you've hit upon is an important 'sub-activity' of the hobby. There might be a 'collecting gene' in humans. This is evidenced by the millions of people, around the world who collect antiques, paintings, cars, firearms, recipe books, beer cans, tomato sauce bottles... you name the item; people somewhere will collect them. All of the true bargain kits I've ever purchased came from sellers on eBay who were not modellers and had no idea what it was they were putting up for sale. Similarly, with the first truly rare kits I came across. I purchased them by chance, did some research on the kits and found they were as rare as hens' teeth. I have five incredibly rare kits that I reserved the right to build, but in the full knowledge that once built, their value is stripped away. Some of that five could be used to finance, say, 20+ expensive 'big time' kits that normally I couldn’t afford. Thanks to you; I might use one of my rarities to buy that 1/32 Lancaster that, at the moment is way outside my model budget. These are dilemmas that, I guess, sooner or later most modellers face. I'm happy to have a few 'collectors' items' but deep down I want to build every kit in my stash. What a lovely problem! Cheers, mate. I like your 'modelling chats'. You should make room on your channel for more of them. All the best... Bill

Or you have a big Scale plane in natural metal finish and you just want to practice that on a smaller kit. Nice video! My first experience watching your channel and I was struck by the topic. It resonates with me because though my wife supports this hobby, she is less tolerant of my attempts of keeping a collection. To be fair, she's not especially vocal about it, I know by her reaction when seeing the few kits I have amassed-that she would rather I buy one, build it THEN perhaps buy another. To her, the "collection" lies more in the finished product rather than the potential build. Funny though, till seeing your video, it has never occurred to me that the stash may well represent another hobby, entirely. And as an investment, one could do a whole lot worse. Since many of your possessions are no longer in production and supply is limited, it only stands to reason that their value will increase over time.. Your spreadsheet you spoke of, does it also include such demographics as original MSRP, current value and what you, yourself paid for it? Perhaps if we all kept such data handy it might give our significant others piece of mind. After all, if one were to kick the bucket, the survivor might cash in for a good chunk of change. Then again, if the relationship should suddenly go south, it might come up in divorce proceedings. Maybe the less said, the better. 😃 You've gained a subscriber today. Thanks! I had a good time!

There are kits I don't have the intention to build, such as the original 1970s release of the Airfix E-Boat. Then there are kits where I gazed into a box filled with sprues and asked myself "did they just disassemble the real thing and made a model kit of every nut and bolt they found ? such as the Takom Kraz truck. What stopped me in my tracks though of considerably enlarging my 1/35th armour collection were the separate track links. First encountered with 1970s Esci kits with ill-fitting track pieces. Today I just cannot endure cleaning, fitting and gluing about 200 separate track links into an acceptable track. A tedious task which crosses that border between relaxing and boring.

Hi Chris , reservations I have re modeller and collector . I wish the "collectors" would "collect" something else . ( stamps , handbags , shoes ?) "Collectors " seem to drive up the price of everything . When an item becomes collectable it usually means the price goes up ( into the silly money bracket !) and it becomes unavailable , thus creating an artificial shortage . the reason "modellers" , ie.those who BUILD , cannot find kits they want is because they are sitting in the spare bedroom of some "Collector" gathering dust !! ( I am biased , as a pensioner I can't afford to have thousands of pounds tied up in a stash 😟😟)

Incredible stash Chris. In the " old" days, stash was synonymous with model building with a little hedge on buying the first edition kit you know might not last in the scale and era you build in. NOW, stashing is almost impossible because of kit cost, combined with all the after market accessories that end up costing much as kit. Overall I think the industry has suffered as the brick and mortar shops are disappearing. That and these man size kits on the internet just make it impossible to stash any more. At your age I had to abandon the hobby because life does indeed take so much out of your personal time. Now retired I'm glad I did stash kits back so I can practice getting back in the game. I have of course bought some current kits, like my Lancs and some Eduards kits to build when I'm confident I won't screw them up. Just my thoughts from an old wombat on a walk about in the colonies, Cheers Bob.

Thank you for this topic Chris. As with most pursuits people engage in, the desire/challenge to have a learning curve to gain skill and knowledge is part of the endeavor. This hobby offers that in many ways. I have a stash of twenty active builds that are at different phases of construction. It gives me more time to plan/work on the modifications that I wish to do and lessens the feeling of burnout or rush to finish. There are three, Canadian, brick & mortar shops I online order from for kits that are better than Ebay. My stash was purchased mostly before price increases and/or supply problems or in the case of the last 1/32 Tamiya F-4E, discontinued kit. There is approximately five years of build time with what I have but that will not stop me from ordering another model if I have a vision/idea on what to do with it.

Like testicular self-examination - This is a very important male health issue. I thought I was alone having an attic with boxfuls of unmade, beautiful, nostalgic, cardboard boxes of childish pleasures! Apparently men used to keep 9orn mags covered in cobwebs up there, waste of time and energy - but it's lovely to know there are more kit-hoarders out there than I imagined. I have been gathering up the original Monogram Tom Daniels 1970-1980 custom cars in the last year or so, and opening each one is a joy, a time capsule into my early life, when I think I built every one, and every single Aurora Horror model. Including the 'working' guillotine. Then they looked pretty scabby, because I had no equipment except tatty brushes and tube glue, and cheerfully twisted parts off the sprues. Now they look exactly as they were supposed to falling prey to my arsenal of airbrushes, tweezers, ridiculously dear side cutters and magnifying glasses. This video is like going to confession really. One day I might just (if I feel particularly masochistic) build the Airfix Apollo rocket (nothing fitted properly, and I think I actually cried) and the Lunar module (ditto) again. Or I might buy them and stash 'em...

My theory is that every hobby has a stash-like element to it. Video games? We call them backlogs. Movies and videos? Also backlogs - maybe stash. The only thing I don’t think it is possible to have a stash for is food (No, MRRs are not considered food). That said, I think one’s stash size \ game backlogs are proportional to time you’ve been in the hobby; your passion for it; and definitely your disposable income. Given the fact that Chris has been at this since 2014, has a mountain stash of kits that can fill a warehouse, and is totally into this hobby, one can apply an algebraic formula to estimate Chris’ income to be way way waaaaay over AU $100!!! All kidding aside, I love the format of mixing things up between kit builds, instructional videos and musings. Thank you, Chris!

Yes, buying and collecting kits is a hobby or perhaps an “affliction” all its own. I restarted kit buying/building back in 1988 when I pulled out an old Tamiya A-10 that I had originally started in medical school when I had a three week vacation back in 1977. My wife was working full time so I bought and worked on that kit. Never finished it till 1988. It looked pretty good and I set it on a shelf in the basement. It was “shot down” by one of my kids exuberant air hockey pucks that flew up into it. Since 1988 I have bought and put on shelves in my basement about 4,000 kits, countless paints, tools, decals, and after market parts for a good many of them. I now have 9 airbrushes and one really nice and large Pace paint booth. I am currently working on 6 kits and I’ve been working on them for between 2 and 15 years. I get a block when it comes to airbrushing them even though back in 2006-2007 I took 2 years of airbrushing classes. I am 69 now. My wife hates to go down in the basement although everything is neatly shelved and organized. She says my kids will curse my memory when I croak as they’ll have to contend with my “collection”. My buying has slowed down markedly as now I only buy a very special kit or something that very much intrigues me. I know I’ll never build it or 99% of what I have. Buying the kits, thinking about making them, tracking down after market parts, decals, and appropriate paints for them has brought me immense pleasure since 1988. My job was high stress with little free time and a few minutes on eBay or an online vendor always was like a very mini-vacation. Then I’d have a week or two anticipation of the item’s arrival. When it would finally appear on my back porch bench, I’d go down to the basement and open it up and review all the parts, directions, and decals. Then up on the shelf. Super fun! The pride and joy of my collection is a complete set of all of the Wingman model kits. Wingman, from Germany, is now defunct and I don’t want to ‘ruin’ the kits by starting them. Crazy, I know! Allen

Hi from Brisbane Chris, I am 60 years old and I have a stash of about 30 models. Like most, I work on the theory that it is better to ask for forgiveness from the wife than permission. She and the daughters have started horse riding and now own their own horses. I no longer have to ask for forgiveness. I have a stash of about 30 models from the perfect grade Bandai Millennium falcon through to the other Star wars fighters plus WWII 1/32 expensive Tamiya stuff to modern Air and Armour. Plus 1/350 Star trek stuff as well. My theory is that if I buy all the Accessories (Canopy masks, Cartograf decals, and resin parts as appropriate) Not to mention all the tools and paint and lighting kits for the large Sci Fi models for when I retire. If I die before then the wife has more assets to sell off and I won't care.

@@beckersmodels currently half way with a 200 scale Bismark. Do 1/48 build in-between working on that. I do about 20-40 of those. Need to start a KZbin. Lol

landscape oil painting, mainly en plain air (aka painting outside). I live in the Sunshine Coast hinterland which has magnificent hill/valley and ocean views and landscapes and I'm obsessed with clouds as well. Hope to segue into it by painting more cloud backgrounds for my inflight aircraft....cheers Chris

Any new 1/48 Tamiya is a buy for me. The same goes with 1/35 Tamiya armor.

Im a bit reluctant with their new 1/48 stuff because some of them are really hard to do wheels up conversions, although I mucked around with their F-35A recently and it looks fairly easy to do...

How many kits in my stash? Too many and not enough. I'm super jealous for the W29 though.

I stupidly sold a W29/Felixstowe dual set while WnW was still operating (aka, I sold it for less than RRP) and then realised my mistake after their demise and had to quickly find one...I still intend on building it, or converting to a Japanese version....

@@beckersmodels the W29/Felixstowe combo was available long after the W29 turned to rocking horse poop and WNW folded. But I already have the Felixstowe (late), which I _dream_ of someday building in the fetching red/white camo. We can all dream, can't we? 😉

Good video, what is the best way to ensure the decals last? Plastic bag with a sachet of silica gel? I too, have models I wish to get to, one day.
@beckersmodels

Thanks Nigel - yep with the decals its best to use the decal backing sheet/baking paper and putting the whole thing in a sealed plastic lunch bag...and keeping them nice and flat. But also dont be put off because you can make a lot of markings these days with a Cricut/Silhouette cutter...cheers Chris

Like many of us, I have more kits than I can build. My biggest problem is that I'm a completer.....I can't just build a Luft46 kit, I have to have every Luft46 kit on the market. I also plagued with collecting every WW2 Japanese aircraft, every German submarine, and a lot of German ww2 armour. I'm committed not to buy any more, but then Border bring out a new 1/35 submarine.....cripes I need help!!

Yep. Every P-51, every Skyraider, every Phantom, every F-86… yes the correct word is “a completer” just not of an actual model in my case.

Totally get that Matt - its the same with my F-14 obsession - I have to have the crap kits as well as the good! Just got a 1/32 Revell/Monogram F-14 which is a bit eye watering in terms of quality but I still may build it!

With the amount of kits that you have in your stash, what will you do with them once they’re built? I’m presuming you wouldn’t have enough space to have them all on display
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels Жыл бұрын
I routinely give my kits away to friends and famiily, or my son plays with them once I'm sick of them. I've started to keep a select few, but I also won't be building everything in the stash thats for sure!

Kitty Hawk - NOOOOOOOOOOOO! Sell it. You will regret it if you don't. Awful, awful kits. They make Italeri (and 70's era Airfix!) look good! They're that bad. The one time I tried to build a KW kit, it nearly broke me. Sapped my mojo to the point that it took a whole year of doing nothing but Bandai Star Wars to restore my modelling mojo...

Needles to say, after seeing a USS Yorktown CV-5 in a "what if" camouflage, I need another one! (Would it be ok to blame Mr. Houdini and his ships for this?)
