Talking Prisoner Cell Block H EP 41 Interview with Glenda Linscott Top Dog Rita Connors
Welcome to EP 41 of Talking Prisoner. Hosts Ken Mulholland and Matt Batten sat down with Glenda Linscott who played inmate Rita Connors. Glenda graduated from NIDA and has worked in all aspects of the performing arts industry. Alongside her considerable acting credits, she has not only been in theatre shows, but also directed them as well. Glenda is also a performance coach, actor trainer and voice-over artist. Her TV credits include: Mennotti, The Sullivans, Patrol Boat, The Cowra Breakout, A Country Practice, The Miraculous Mellops, Big Ideas, Janus, Soldier, Soldier, Murder Call, All Saints, Back Berner, Fergus McPhail, MDA, McLeod's Daughters, Underbelly: Infiltration, Winners and Losers, Neighbours, and the Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries. We spoke to Glenda about her life growing up and what lead her into acting and her time and NIDA and what it was like to study at NIDA. Glenda currently teaches at the Western Australian Academy of Performing arts (WAAPA) and spoke to us what it is like to teach. We spoke to Glenda about her time on the various TV shows that she has appeared on and how she got the part on Prisoner and what the audition was like for her. Glenda was able to share her memories of playing Dr Imogen “Tootsie” Soames in Murder Call and what it was like preparing for that role. We spoke in length about Glenda’s time on Prisoner and how she got the role of Top Dog Rita Conners and what the audition was like. Rita wore many tattoos on the show and she told us why they ended up showing less of her tattoos later in the show. Glenda shared with us about her heavy workload on the show and fainting on set one day from exhaustion and how tiring it could be playing Rita. Glenda shared some stories and memories of working with Ian Doig who played slasher and filming those scenes with the CB radios. We broke down some iconic scenes that Glenda appeared in including the fight against Joan Ferguson in the Lou Kelly Riot episodes and what it was like to film those episodes and we also discussed the Blackmoor period and working with Ray Meagher.

I'm 35 and just finished binge watching prisoner. Rita was my all time favourite top dog next to Bea. I was also shocked and proud to hear that she is from Rhodesia. My mom and dad were in Rhodesia and then moved to Australia, I was born in Australia but grew up in South Africa now I'm back in Australia. Would love to give "Rita" a cuddle 🥰 WARRIORS!!!!!

The gorgeous & most humble Glenda. I'm thrilled I got to meet her twice when the Prisoner fan club flew her over to the UK. First in 2009 to Birmingham & Glasgow & the following year with Maggie which was extra special starring together. Plus Glenda performed her one-woman show 'Retrospective Rita' performing 5 monologues of her all-time favourite characters from stage & screen, the last being of course Rita Connors. A kind & generous human being. One of the nicest actors to meet from Prisoner. Bless her for doing the interview on her day off. Another amazing addition to the Talking Prisoner series. Thank you, Glenda, Matt & Ken.

@@TalkingPrisoner Bea was definitely my favourite top dog and I love Myra, but Rita gives me such fond memories as I started watching Prisoner from age 6 when it was being shown on Central TV in the UK. The episodes from Blackmoor up to the finale are some of my favourite and Glenda's performance as Rita during this period is up there with some of the best acting in the whole series. That Penguin award was well deserved 👏

Rita Connors was the best female character ever created for Australian television. Prisoner is the best drama ever made. The storyline regarding the indigenous character Sarah West and Pamela Maddigan episode 658 to 670 were the best episodes ever shown on Aus television. The other theme that was POWERFUL was female peer friendship. Not the stock standard Aus drama girls fighting over the same bloke, boring. Lois Collinder played Rita's best friend Alice Lurch for the last 100 episodes. Fabulous and life affirming friendship. Above all Glenda Linscott the most gifted actor in this country. Good luck teaching at WAAPA . Thanks for your work at Blackmoor . The storyline was really how Ned Kelly would have behaved if he was a female prisoner. Ned would have stood up just like Linscott's Connors. Take a bow Rita Connors. Let's have far more drama and stories that are female centred. Can't be too hard. Esther Mitchell

It’s funny that this would pop up in my feed, as I just finished my 28th run of the series this evening! And, in the comments of Episode 692, I have written a short fan fiction of “Rita’s Story”, inspired by Rita’s final line, “I’ll be the oldest bikey in the world!” Loved Rita, and love Glenda!

@@TalkingPrisoner Here ya go. And as I stated, this is fan fiction. And the story continues... Rita stated, "I'll be the oldest biker in the world!" And this is true. Rita went on & continued treatment, and went into remission. By her side, Alice cared for her night and day, anxiously awaiting Harry's release from Barnhurst. Harry received an early parole due to good behavior & remissions. Upon his release, Harry returned to Wentworth and was hired by the department as maintenance & groundskeeper, married Alice & lived in the apartment on the prison grounds where Alice & Rita reside. Anne puts Rita up for parole because of her illness, and is approved. But little did anyone else know, Anne also submitted Alice for early release. With remissions & diligence in caring for Rita, Alice received her parole so she could continue with her caring for Rita. And, upon their release, Harry & Alice take Rita to live on Alice's family farm along with Ida, who passed away shortly after moving in, due to a massive stroke. Although the four were only together for a short time, they were a family, not through blood, but through love. Harry & Alice continued caring for Rita, helping her through the mourning of Ida, and recovery, with experimental medication & treatment. Rita started riding again, but not with a club. She roamed the country, and returned when news arrived of Alice joining the duffer's club. It was Rita's turn to take care of Alice while Harry cared for the farm, and soon they were a family of four again with the arrival of Ida Louise, a beautiful curly hair who would receive more love than any child could ever wish for. And as their dear friend Lorelei would say, "And they lived happily ever after." ******************* Joan, on the other hand, would not have it easy in the west. But that, I'll save for another day. And believe me, EVERYTHING COMES FULL CIRCLE FOR THE FREAK! *******************
@Nacho-Mamma

One more thing about Rita, although it probably wasn’t intentional, almost from her arrival to Wentworth, Rita begins to show signs of being sick. They are subtle at the start, but the closer to the end, the more noticeable.

@@TalkingPrisoner No sadly. it's 25 years since I left University. Wasn't prepared for it and not preparared for the outside world. I was from a poor family and had a major inferiority complex. Have to say I encounted some mean spiritedness/bullying from some of my fellow students/housemates. Not invited for nights out as I wasn't considered one of the "cool" people. They even had a Christmas party in our kitchen without even mentioning it! Anyway I met lots of really nice people whilst travelling, people who weren't as narrow minded as the ones who attended the university I did. That is why I back up Glenda's comments 100%. Don't get me started on the debt either. I had the Student loans company chasing after me for 25 years and now they have changed that to 40 years for new students. That's one hell of a commitment, so if you aren't sure wait and get some life expereince first.

The discussion about Rita's tatts was funny. I always found Rita's "Slasher" tattoo on her arm to be quite amusing.. haha

I'm a wee bit younger than Glenda being a mid 60's baby from the UK. But my mum also had a chance to be a £10 pom back in her youth. Luckily she didn't take up the offer. Else I wouldn't be here today. lol She did actually tell me in the late 1970's when I was a (quickly) growing teen, that all things considered how the UK was under the then Labour Government that she regretted that decision. But luckily we had an incoming Conservative Government that changed the economic landscape of the UK right around that time. So we lived happily for many years after that in a vastly changed country. She died almost 10 years ago now, having lived out her days being able to afford to eat and to heat her house. She would probably be mightily pissed off again at the current situation were she still with us.

Great interview however way too many adverts! 40 seconds into it and an advert came up. For the whole 1 hour interview, at least 20 or more ad breaks... most videos i watch arent this bad...
