It was so great to see Shawn Tomkin on this episode! Ironsworn is a fantastic game and I'm really glad Shawn got this kind of exposure. Games that play like Apocalypse World really force you to incorporate the fiction into the results you get on your rolls, which changes your headspace in terms of how to think of difficulty without modifying dice rolls. Even though it's not officially part of the rules, another way to look at going against overwhelming odds (whether in your favor or against you) is to change the nature of the outcomes from succeed/mixed success/failure to either fantastic success/success/mixed success (for when the odds are overwhelmingly in your favor) or slight failure/failure/massive failure (for when the odds are overwhelmingly against you). Can't wait to see season 2!

Pure awesome-sauce. Great. When you were debating over heart, edge, and shadow, I was whispering -" heart, heart, heart". You didn't disappoint. However, why does there need to be a "magical" barrier"? Natural ones could serve the same function. I mean, India and China have grown into two distinct, millennia old, vastly different cultures despite being sharing a border. Unless, of course, that's going to be a major plot point or something....... Regardless, lovely vid. Love your work and I can't wait for next season. You've been missed.

Hi Trevor, I have a Wonderdraft map of the Ironlands that I made for myself. If you would like to use it in your show, let me know how I can get it to you. I am excited to watch Season 2 and see how you get on with Ironsworn. Remember, it is your game, and you can always pause and look over the rules (mostly off camera). Although you may want it to be more akin to a radio drama, I assure you that the solo RPG community stops to look things up 'all the time' when playing. Sometimes my games feel like they are taking place in 'slow motion'. It was nice to put a face with Shawn's voice. Thank you for having him on your show to help 'convert' our next hero. This is kind of like 'Frasier' spinning off from 'Cheers,' or 'Rhoda' spinning off from 'Mary Tyler Moore" but with more swords and monsters.

So cool that you interviewed Shawn, Trevor. And got his help with adapting Arne to Ironsworn. Nice choices for his assets and stats. Great concept for your version of the Ironlands. One thing that was an adjustment for me is how initiative works in IS. It’s dynamic - based on narrative positioning to start and then on the results of your rolls. Very different than SW. Looking forward to the show to begin!

I cant speak to struggles putting on a show but as for solo roleplay id embrace death because you can just as easily shift the focus to a companion or years down the road in the aftermath of the characters failure. Heck this show could go back to Simon and see what hes been up to during this period of time. I personally just started a solo Dungeon World campaign and lost my main character in the opening scene. Now his companion is my main character and is running away while the demon strings up his previous companion like a christmas decoration =P

I really like what he said about the difficulty being wrapped up in the consequences of the roll, rather than a modifier to the roll itself. I think regular DND games give us a double whammy of consequence and penalty, rather than just consequences. I like that.

How to scale dificulty of tasks: Easy task = One roll to see if sucess Hard task = Face danger one or more times befoure you try to resolve the task Example: Runing fast on clean steady ground and jump from the clift to the other side = One roll to see if sucess Runing on one slippery ground, you "face danger" to see if you dont fall befoure jump and then you try the jump So, if you want to make it hard you make more steps befoure the main issue/task. The extra npc you can do other thing to, temporarely give yourself the asset card Companion Kindred, as long that person or group are with you the Kindred Card can represent them. Other way is to "hack" the other companion cards, example turning a Owl into an hired Guide or the Cave Lion into an Frindely Hunter Btw this is a dream come true, 2 of my favorite famouse persons talking together and doing well :D

Hey, Trevor! Love your show and your energy! Really looking forward to season 2! I thought I would offer some thoughts to soothe your nervousness at getting into Ironsworn. First, I would suggest listening to Shawn's podcast "Ask the Oracle" for some example play. It was really helpful for me. Second, I think you'll find that task difficulty isn't a big issue because the narrative takes such a central role. For example, you mentioned scaling a cliff having different difficulties in good weather versus bad weather, but something like that would only come up in the Undertake a Journey move or wrapped up in a combat situation so that you would be marking progress and the difficulty of the journey or fight would dictate how hard the cliff scaling is. The hit or miss on the dice would call for the cliff scaling rather than the cliff scaling calling for which dice to roll. It is quite backwards from a traditional RPG but really fun! Third, I suggest you check out the Delve supplement as there is an option to use delving as undertaking a journey which may be more fun and produce a bit more drama for the show. Plus, I would love to see you run a delve for one of your episodes. The way themes and domain interplay is fantastic. Finally, Shawn has updated the Secure an Advantage move for the Sci-Fi version of Ironsworn coming out, and I would suggest using the updated version of that move as it makes it a much better option in gameplay. Rules as written, you usually wouldn't use Secure an Advantage because the risk is too great. Hope those tips help! I'm so looking forward to season 2!

have you heard of the Spycraft 2.0 RPG system? it has these things called 'dramatic conflicts', such as resolving stuff like hacking, chases, interrogations, seduction... i am trying to implement this subsystem into my own solo games to handle NPC interaction, which is always kind of weird to do with just yourself. but anything that can help add more A.I. elements in a solo game the better!!!
