I can't recall who said it but when you read Robert E Howard, "You can place yourself at a campfire and you are actually listening to the protagonist retelling the tale", that seems to me to sum it up better than anything I've heard so far.

Howard and Lovecraft were close friends. Lovecraft was also way ahead of his time. Howard actually puts Conan into the Lovecraftian mythos framework.

I loved seeing Razor hold up that Solomon Kane Omnibus. That may not be my favorite purchase, but it was one of my most anticipated. Its biggest failing is simply that there isn't more of it! There just weren't very many original SK stories in the collection. There are going to be three whole omnibuses devoted to Kull, there should have been at least as many Solomon Kane stories. Original tales of Kane on the high seas, more of him in the Black Forest of Northern Europe, more of his epic trek across Africa.... So many missed opportunities. I haven't read much of Dark Agnes (just the recent 'Serpent War' crossover by Jim Zuub) but I wouldn't mind seeing more of her. As long as she is written in the spirit of the pulps and not the spirit of today...

I found Robert E Howard back in the mid 80's, and I'm so glad that I did, cause its getting harder to find all his stories for newcomers, as most have been out of print for decades. Its kinda sad, as his work is profound, but is deemed "racist" & "sexist" by today's authorities, who couldn't even write a comic book. Its just sad. And to those of you who read the comics of Conan...Understand that the writing of Robert E Howard stories are almost nothing like the tripe that comes from modern authors. The recent authors write Conan very differently, and nowhere near as intelligent nor good.

@@shinobi-no-bueno I don't think he injects his catholic beliefs into the movies he makes but I can see why you would be afraid of that. Unlike the others in holywood however there is no preaching in his movies. He just shows brutal reality and that is what I mean for Conan. I want to see the brtuality of barbarians in film but using conan license. Have monsters, wizards, and mystery (lot of dark magic and sacrifice of humans to appease demonic entities) but give us the gore of apocalypto and the values of an honorable warrior who is against the cults and manipulators of society. The original Conan in the 80s did that wonderfully but a brutal version of this with a lot more up close and personal emotional drama mixed into the movie would make this better than the Arnie one people keep praising. The same way Lord of the Rings managed to tell a fantasy tale without being kiddy and teeny, but actually an adult and mature story about the fall of heroes morals causing genocidal army to almost make mankind extinct. These are timeless stories because they resonate with many veterens of war and REAL MEN, not just pimply nerds who read a lot of comic books and play DnD. LOL

I think my favourite character so far is Solomon Kane. I've reread Savage tales many times and he feels like someone who feels like a force of nature and yet still have a tinge of humanity.

I agree. Kane is Howard's most complex character. He's so complex even he doesn't know why he does half the things he does. LOL To be serious, Kane isn't a superman. Yes, he's a born fighter, but, he nearly lost to Le Loup in Red Shadows. And made the mistake of laying his sword aside and nearly died for it. Kane is also portrayed as having compassion and being willing to lay down his life for anyone in danger or under oppression. Another difference is Conan, Kull, Bran Mak Morn are all portrayed as having the natural "advantages of the barbarian" being quicker, more agile, and having more endurance. Kane is a civilized man. Yes, he's lean and strong as a hungry wolf, but, he has no natural advantages beyond his hard life and being a natural born fighter. Its his faith in the justice of his cause that carries him through. Like in Skulls in the Stars where he fights a clawed ghost with nothing more than courage and faith. That makes him less superhuman than the barbarian stable and thus more human.

I doubt Tolkien drew from REH, Tolkien was creating his world at the same time as him if not before, it just took many decades before he was published. I believe it was de Camp who said Tolkien had read some Conan, don’t know if it’s been corroborated. That’s not to put down REH’s influence.

J.R.R. Tolkien got acquainted with the work of R.E. Howard through L. Sprague de Camp in 1964. Sprague gave Tolkien the Sword and Sorcery anthology that included Howard's story "Shadows in the Moonlight". Now, according to Sprague, Tolkien said that he "rather liked" the story. To me, that sounds like a polite British response, which might or might not have been very genuine, but Tolkien was very negative about the other stories in the anthology. I'm pretty sure Tolkien was unaware of Howard before 1964, somehow I don't see American pulp fiction lying around in the study of an Oxford don.

But it came out the same year as Batman The Animated Series as it's competition. It's no wonder it didn't last as long, but that show had it all. Wizards, Sorceresses, Warriors, gods, Lizard people, Dragons, Ninjas, Time Travel, Ghosts, 4 armed flying demon monsters, Phoenixs. It's easier to write a list of things the show didn't have.

1.) This was a fantastic podcast. It's refreshing to see people praising literature of the past with such passion instead of shitting all over it or ripping into people shitting on it. Not that I have an issue with the latter but it's a nice change of pace. 2.) The only Howard thing I'm familiar with is Conan. I remember in the mid-late 90s I found a bunch Robert E. Howard Conan books at flea markets for like 10 cents. Sadly I don't have them anymore as I needed to sell them off in the mid 00s along with a bunch of other crap I wish I still had after my car abruptly died on me. In hindsight wasn't worth it. Last year I downloaded all the Conan stories that were on audible and binged the fuck out of them driving to and from work for a year. I have Solomon Kane in my wishlist so I'll be getting to that soon. 3.). Little bit surprised no one brought up or asked in the chat about the Conan The Adventurer cartoon from the early 90s and your thoughts on it? I loved it growing up, and while it did it's own thing, for a kids show the feel of it's world and characters were closer to the books than the movies ever got. 4.) YES! Rastan! I own the really good Master System port of it. For an 8-bit game it's so satisfying swinging a Sword at enemies and seeing them explode in a spray of blood!

He was seemingly a bit of a grifting poser, who ultimately criticized Howard and then painted himself as Conan's "savior", ultimately even suing the very company or estate who put their trust in him to write Conan tales to make himself somehow the "cultural heir" of it. It was despicable.

As someone who is writing a science fantasy book/novel great stories usually require retooling and editing. However, we need to make our own products and companies. Hollywood is a monopoly and needs to be broken up. Every state should have several studios and produce films.

I'm really glad I listened to this. I read one of those watered down Conan books in the early 1980s. I wasn't that impressed. It was okay. I thought I was reading the real thing. I'm looking forward to reading a real Howard story now. I'll start with "The Shadow Kingdom." Also, there was an excellent independent film in 1996 about Robert E. Howard starring Vincent D'Onofrio and Renée Zellweger before they were stars called "The Whole Wide World." I highly recommend it.

In my eyes when its about the death of fantasy movies, there was a movie before peter jacksons lord of the rings that could be a huge hit and had such huge potential but was a un-/watchable trashfire instead and even the first fatalblow that killed fantasy movies. Its the first Dungeons and dragons movie . They missed the mark sooooo hard that Peter Jacksons great LotR movies sparked that hope again but brought the true kill for fantasy movies with Eragon and such . And even the Eragon books were kinda meh or bad . But its understandable when a small child was the author to the books . So i cant blame him .

I wonder why we didn't see the director of Solomon Kane movie after that. It was pretty damn good. If I were DC and Marvel I would have jumped at hiring someone who is able to mix fantastical element with a gritty feel like he did. I feel like he would have done a better job at doing a Jonah Hex than what we got. Or Ghost Rider. Years later I saw another movie he did called The Bunker which was shockingly good and surprising. James Purefoy would have made a good James Bond and Batman.

Dark Agnes is one of Howard's most underrated creations. Sadly, the film synopsis they put out for the potential adaptation was following some supernatural 'save the world' shit that didn't belong in what should be a swashbuckling historical action film. That first story 'Sword Woman' is an almost perfect blueprint for a feature film. Dark Agnes's story is of a mentally unstable young peasant girl's journey from escaping the evil patriarchal oppression of marriage to becoming a bad-ass sword fighter and mercenary. It's remarkably 'progressive' for the time, and should be noted by people who accuse Howard of just writing sexist claptrap. Howard only wrote two complete Dark Agnes stories, and they're quite distinct for Howard for a number of reasons. One is that the first one is a full-blown origin story, something Howard just didn't really do. Another unique thing is that the second story, 'Blades For France' was a direct sequel. He only wrote a fragment of a third story, and you could see that he was already compromising the character by making her more of a damsel. Not to mention bringing in an occult element that just didn't fit.

Wish book companies would release all of Robert E Howard's wssterns, boxing, detective stories all his other stories. Wish we got more collections. I need to them. Lol. Wish they would relsase more books with other genres that Robert E Howard did. Hes the greatest my favouritenglad he gets respect from u giys hes the best.
