I met my old sarge after we were both done serving. He started by apologizing for his incredibly rude behaviour during our duty. I really appreciated that! It made him way more human, and honestly, I'd rather go into battle with somebody I respect unconditionally, rather than someone I respect only out of duty.
@8bitwarrior037
@8bitwarrior037 Жыл бұрын
For me personally, if someone doesn't respect me at work, I can't respect them at all. I will respect the rank but as a person, they get nothing from me. Before deployment, I'd been at my duty station for a year and always been looked down on and disrespected. I refused to go with them because I can't fight beside people I don't care about. That defeats the whole purpose of the "infantry brotherhood". I'm a strong believer that if you want soldiers who are willing to do certain things in the military, they need to be treated with respect and not just respect people higher than them

we called our NCOs by their ranks but they don't act like drill sergeants lol. but again when you deploy with your NCOs and live in the suck, the relationship between troops is different as opposed to you vs an NCO you never served in combat with. There's a level of understanding and mutual respect amongst peers who served in combat that garrison soldiers don't have.

My dad’s last posting was him and one other guy baby sitting a barracks while this small, Vietnam era base was being shut down. You could literally walk from one end of the compound to another in about 5 minutes. He was an E-7 while his subordinate was an E-6, same age, both retiring at the same time. He told me on their first day the E-6 asked him, “Hey Chief, how you doin. Not much to do around here, what you want to do?” “First, we’re going to fly under the radar and not bother nobody and ride it out for the next 18 months. Oh, and you can just call me Brian.” True to his word, their job consisted of making sure the building didn’t burn down, and that’s about it. Still friends to this day.

In the Marine Infantry (3/2 Kilo 2nd Plt) we were physically abused and beaten for accidentally calling Corporals "Lance Corporal" or for not using a senior Lance Corporals rank in turn. They were always drunk. Even at work, always completely wasted and slurring their speech. My senior Lance, LCPL Crosby, had me put my hand on the table and then dug a knife into it while he was wasted in uniform just to feel powerful, I still have the scar. My Sergeant, SGT Early, sucker punched me in the face once in the hallway of my barracks just because he wanted to look cool. He was so drunk his eyes were crossed. Even 3 deployments later as a decorated NCO, the experience left me so bitter and with such a problem with authority that I wanted nothing to do with the Marine Corps. Trashed all my uniforms and anything that had my unit insignia on it.

@@jongles2530 absolutely 100%. More than just respect but because it teaches people a lesson. None of us fought back though because that just wasn't a thing, we were all taught from boot camp through infantry school and even at our command receiving to just let it happen, under the guise that it teaches discipline, instant willing obedience to orders, and establishes pecking order. We were, totally ass backwards, convinced we would be pussies to not just take it. However, that was all made up nonsense. Theres a difference between harsh corporal punishment and masturbatory cruelty. It was done for sport, by angry drunks who hated their lives and wanted to release their problems on us. Me and my generation were instead pussies for taking the abuse, drinking thr kool-aid and buying into that nonsense. And I'm talking *abuse*, cut up with broken glass, ass beatings, some dudes were sexually exploited, one guy was forced to DD to someone's house and was forced to give a loaded shotgun a blowjob in front of one of the guys wives to show off. That guy went UA and was too scared to come back, until he was pulled over in Jersey and sent to the brig before being separated. We all, being conditioned little boots, convinced ourselves we were tougher than him and he was a pussy for not taking it. It was only after deploying, and seeing how completely ineffective and incapable my senior Marines were that I realized they were losers not idols. Sent me into crippling depression. What we should have done was fight back and not been little bitch sorority girl pledges. Should have beat the attitude out of my team leaders face with an e tool in his sleeping bag while in firewatch, taken his teeth worn it as a necklace to show everyone I wasn't someone to be fucked with. Like all of us should have done. It was a confusing time being 18 and wanting to impress these guys though. You develop a sickness from it, a need to earn their respect the more the take away your self respect. And when they have all the power and also outnumber you 5:1 certain social instincts occur. There were no noble or honorable men for me to look up to. Only sadistic alcoholics with no future. A large portion of that platoon, including some of my friends, have killed themselves and it continues to happen a few times per year. Maybe beating the shit out of them would have beaten some value into them and saved some lives. Or at least saved myself and my friends some traumatic abnormal experiences and problematic complexes. After those experiences I became so irate and disgruntled that I regularly lashed out at any and all form of authority that deviated even slightly from my ethics. I yelled at commissioned officers and staff NCOs as a Corporal if they're dereliction caused problems with Marines getting to chow. I physically hurt other Marines if they overstepped their hazing rituals. All the energy that should have been directed at my abusers during my abuse instead was perpetually releasing on any figure of authority which did not meet my standards, even when it was a punishable overreach of my own authority. It still happens from time to time even as a civilian. I actually am incompatible as an employee, and only do independent contracting, because I get into it with bosses constantly.

BCT, week 3 or so. Drill Sergeant Boone, or Satan as many called him, held a knife to a recruit’s throat as he woke him up for his missed fire guard shift (to screw with him and teach him a lesson). Fast forward to graduation on the parade field, he was just shooting the shit with us all. It was so abnormal after nine weeks of not that.
