Talking to Doctors: Tips for Students and New Nurses (SBAR) is a communication tool to help new nurses, student nurses and all nurses tailor their conversations to reduce the nerves or fears that often come with nurse-physician interactions.
Communicating within our healthcare team, supervisors, and physicians require that nurses use a system to ensure the information they share is relevant and understood. SBAR is one tool that is often cited in nursing education and utilized to provide a focused report.
S stands for situation. It answers two questions: What if my major concern? What is going on now:?
B stands for Background. Ask yourself what just happened?
A stands for Assessment. This will provide information around what you did and what you think is going on.
R stands for recommendation. What is you would like to see? What do you need to happen?
When we use a standardized tool, a system that is familiar to others, we improve the level of understanding among the team to ensure we are providing best patient care and outcomes.
