I have been working at HODINKEE for almost five years now. And for five years I have searched high and low for a woman to invite on Talking Watches. Sure, there are plenty of women who wear watches, who love watches, and who want to talk about watches. But none that had that certain pizzazz we were looking for - until now. I am very excited to introduce to you our latest Talking Watches guest: entrepreneur, author, philanthropist, and former Real Housewife of New York, Bethenny Frankel.

I'm a female watch enthusiast and was so so pleased to see a 'talking watches' with ladies. However I must say I'm a little disappointed with the female guest. Though she had a interesting collection with some beautiful watches, there are really no stories behind them, other then her ex gave her this, of gifted her that. To say she gets annoyed with winding her watches too was disappointing too. That is part of your connection to your watch. Please please continue with this segment of including ladies in your content though, because we do love watches too.

She wants her watches to be like their men: just give her what she needs from them. In the case of them men is watches, in the case of the watches is something to match with her jacket or shoes. She even straight-face admits that "I wear most of them as jewelry, anyway" and Cara doesn't start to laugh uncontrollably, but actually nods in agreement.

I find women connect their things based on the relationships that lead them to it. I'm not saying this is 100% across all women, but I tend to break my life up into time units of what vehicle I was driving at the time, whereas my wife breaks her life up into which boyfriend she had at the time. I do wish the guest was a bit more focused on the story of the watch in the same way many guests talked about their fathers, but watches mean a different thing for men, I think. I think in the future, the interviewer should focus a bit more energy on drawing those sorts of questions out as well, if only to placate male watchers.

@@perthwatchgirl Thanks! I agree that it's not just about the guys, though I do think having a male interviewer should be on the table with female guests. I mean, I think the most heartfelt interview I've seen so far is the point when Alton Brown re-lived finding his Dad's watch on eBay. Those moments are just as much why I watch all this as much as John Mayer getting into the crunch of it.

I totally support having more women on talking watches, but I don't think this is as feminist as one might think. How many times did she say some variation of "my boyfriend gave me this"? And making fun of a guy who gifted you a hulk? Not cool. *Edit* Watch the Daniel Dae Kim episode. That is one of the reasons why I got into watches. THAT'S a watch collector (versus accumulator of expensive things).

I'm annoyed that she refers to the details of the watches she owns as if the watches are one of a kind. Every Rose Gold Daytona 116505 I've seen has diamond baguette hour markers, and every 116508 green dial with gold Daytona has red circles on the chronos. It's like picking a given style out of a catalog. The same with her AP "dusted diamond" model; you can get the ap 67654bc.zz.1264bc.01 white gold model, or the 67654OR.ZZ.1264OR.01 rose gold model. It's referred to as the "Cascade." These aren't rare watches that are "hard to get", just hard to afford for most people.

@@MPD90 That’s a total non sequitur. No one is worrying about gender. Cara has ‘searched high and low for 5 years for a female collector with pizzazz’ only to present us with Bethenny’s rather lacklustre passion for watches. Listening to an entitled vacuous airhead sharing her passion for collecting shiny expensive things is not the content any of us are hoping for. I’ve watched 1000s of hours of horological content on youtube and I have NEVER come across a female watch collector. I’m sure I’m not alone in harbouring curiosity for the interests and stories of a female collector. The search goes on.

@domingowilfredjuan , yes you collect them. You go out and seek them out. Just like a coin collector. Even when someone goes out and collects cans for the aluminum. They go out and seek. If someone hands you something and you keep it. Your not collecting. You are receiving something and keeping it. Thus they are accumulating. I doubt people are handing you lots of patches. Your are seeking them out. Every collector will tell you that the most fun of this watch hobby(collecting) is the hunt. Difference between somebody that keeps and someone that collects.

Hmmm I think there lies the problem. I don’t think she did or the editing was not that great. Way too much focus on the how (she got the watches) and too less “why”. Questions the interviewer could have asked: Why did the boyfriend give her the watch, was that watch an object of desire for her before, what did she like about that watch, does it commemorate as specific occasion? What do you like about the XYZ, what do you think about the brand XYZ, how did you acquire this watch and why were you drawn to it so laser focused (as she claims to be). With steering the interview away from Ex’s and to the watches themselves it would have made it come across way more genuine. I would like to see more female collectors and interviewers!!

OK, I see the critics posting here and there are some fair observations, but in this collection, I've seen some of the most gorgeous watches I've ever seen, period. Stunning designs, and in most cases, one rarely sees as most videos focus on the men's designs. Thanks Hodinkee, it's rare to have one's mind open up in a new direction. Strangely, I bought a ladies' G-Shock, but looked like a men's octagonal Casioak with a contrasting rubber strap, but it's a damn metal G-shock for £100!

I’m glad to have these series back but I must say, she’s probably the female equivalent of Kevin O’Leary. Just a bit on the shallow side and most of her watches were just gifts from ex-boyfriends. I’m surprised she doesn’t call it her “collectione”😅

RICHIE LUXURY Let’s not talk about how much money celebs have, really uninteresting. You can’t be a serious watch collector if you’re not prioritizing watches, so you need to have some money in order to attain some great pieces. Also it’s not that interesting to hear about how many watches she’s got from ongoing and past relationships. Almost all of the participants in this series have shit loads of money, so unless you criticize the whole platform I’m not biting. Honestly I would love to see Ellen because she is a serious watch collector. I’ve seen a 5204 on her wrist. You’re deep in if you swing like that. Great episode though, nice to see the elegante and the cartiers.

@@MPD90 Definitely not among my favourite episodes. I was eager to get my girlfriend more into watches, and I've been waiting for a female collector on talking watches to show her, unfortunately I will not be showing her this... My opinion is that there are several other more interesting individuals that would've been capable to communicate the culture more appropriately. This resembles a corny GQ "look at my iced out Nautilus" video. I find it confusing that Cara wouldn't want a more watch-culture-empowering woman to represent an important milestone like this. Take for instance Anna from Theo and Harris... Could've been pretty cool to witness that geek-off. Frankel clearly has things going on for herself and objectively speaking her collection beats the shit out most viewer's collections. I just think that it is a misrepresentation of the Dink's talking watches segment. In the same way that I wouldn't want/expect to see Soulja boy off in dis hoe.

I hope Hodinkee do not misdiagnose the reaction to this video and try to claim that some viewers must be sexist. Frankel is the antithesis of every characteristic that hodinkee holds in high regard when discussing what makes a great collector. The fact that this discussion was so heavily edited tells you that even Hodinkee weren’t interested in a lot of what she had to say.

Interesting to see that comments on this episode on KZbin are widely negative, whereas comments on Hodinkee website for this video are all positive. Thankfully there is no censorship here and Hodinkee can't filter comments like they do on their website. I wish Hodinkee would be less obsessed with celebrities (especially shallow ones) and more focused on true horology enthusiasts. One does not have to be rich and famous to be interesting. Especially with our hobby.

I was much looking forward to a female guest on Talking Watches. I did not anticipate, however, that the female guest would embody every tired trope and stereotype about women in this historically male-dominated space. Somewhere there is a woman with a tasteful watch collection wishing that she could chuck her iPad at Bethenny Frankel.

She may not be a typical true and hard-core collector that would satisfy the horological collector snobs out there but it’s a start. Women will gain more interest and education through this and the numerous Hodinkee content that may in time shape horological timepieces for women in the future.

Yeah I agree with the other posts... If Hodinkee is going to reach out to women watch enthusiasts more directly, then Ellen Degeneres is the one to get. I suspect she knows her stuff. Betheny’s stuff is mostly glitzy ‘Manhattan chic’ chick stuff - but then again that’s to be expected of her.

Went from "Talking Watches" to "Watches I've Taken" real quick. Left me with a really unpleasant feeling all throughout the video. Would definitely like to see more women collectors in the series but please Hodinkee, spend more time searching for your guests and please don't select them based on the size or dollar value of their collection, especially if a rich person was "gifted" them.

I don't get all the hate in the comments. Her collection had some legit pieces. That diamond RO doesn't buy her any street cred, but Pras gets props for the Tuxedo (which was also dope, not taking anything from Pras)? And I don't think I've seen anything on Talking Watches as off the wall bananas as a quartz FP Journe. I thought it was refreshing to not see the normal cast of vintage Subs and stainless Daytonas. She didn't have one "investment" piece. It was all based on personal taste.
