Some things are truly and they never change. And Shug is proving (showing, teaching, ...) this in the most funniest and clever way. Absolutely catching. In 1988, when I was 11 years old, I was climbing a small peak in Pirin Mountain, Bulgaria, with my grandma during the winter. And I've experienced (and remembered) her advice: keep your feet warm - no matter how, make a "sandwich" with your socks and nylon bags , if you don't have something more appropriate... Such small, but truly things, can save lives.

You're a national treasure Shug. Every time I see one of your camp videos, I just want to get out there. Have you done any videos about hiking solo, specifically? Any tips (mainly to assure your family that you won't get eaten by a bear)?

What I like most about your winter camping videos is the equal mix of actual movement (hiking, pulk-pulling, post-holing, etc), and camping (hammock stuff, mealtime and snacks, gear description, etc), and a generally fearless sense of adventure (BWCA near beaver ponds, SHT Section 13 craziness, -40° frigid insanity, etc.) You get out there when most of us stay in. And you bring us along. Thanks, Shug.

Hey Shug this is Staff sergeant Jeter, my company has been celebrating today because last night we captured 6 Taliban soldiers who have been firing off mortar rounds at our compound for the last 2 days. Woo buddy it was such a relief. I keep watching your videos and sure think that you would have been a good soldier in the Army with as much camping and hiking as you do. It drives my wife crazy when i am back in the states because i have a hard time being comfortable sleeping in a regular bed because i am so used to sleeping in Humvees or on the ground. Great Stuff from the Shug. The basic principle of winter camping is staying dry. How you do that is up to you. Everyone's body is different. Best to test your winter systems in an easy to bail out location, as Shug mentions. Of course Shug is talking about cold camping. If you have the means to create a heated shelter, then you can dry out your gear and you'll have a better time of it.

Hi Shug. Just to let you know, filters like Sawyer water filters....any filter that has the membrane filters...if they freeze it knackers them. The ice crystals expand and get sharp, which rupture and pierce the filter, which once defrosted allows bugs through. NEVER let your filter freeze. All the best Dean Wales, UK. 🏴🏴🏴🏴

After winter on the AT (down to the teens) I'm a big fan of waterproof breathable socks. I wore trail runners that were almost always wet and/or frozen, but merino liners and heavy merino hiking socks inside the waterproof socks kept my feet warm and dry. Taking a section of foam to stand on is a great idea. At the end of the day the shoes went into a giant baggie which went into the foot box of my quilt. Never had to try to put my feet into frozen shoes. Your vids gave me some great pointers before I went out. Thank you muchly!

A friend and I just dig our first sub 10 degree (with wind chill) hammock camp last week in the LG. It was in the 20's with 20 plus winds. One thing I did discover is how fast higher wind can strip heat from my under quilt. I need to grab one of the hammock protectors I reckon to help out on that front. I don't worry about the yipping coyotes or howling wolves too much. Not much I can do at that point but lay and listen to them.

Hearing the coyotes is one of the joys of camping for me

I'm also a sweaty guy, merino wool baselayers are an absolute must for me! You make a lot of great points in this video that'll definitely help a lot of people stay safe while winter camping. Water is definitely a chore. Hoping to get some snow in Ohio this year to enjoy using the pulk more. Great video Shug!

Pulk onward. Have to watch my pace and walk real slow not to sweat pulking.

@@shugemery I hike at a pretty quick pace so I need to better discipline myself to take it easy so I don't break too much of a sweat in the winter.

I bring a small flask of my favorite wiskey out with me. Helps in all conditions
