It took me years to understand this content, but I can say, as someone who knows the subject matter well these days, that I’ve never heard anybody do as great of a job as Mark in explaining it. Mark truly has a knack for explanation. I learned the exact same material presented here from a teacher years ago, before the Internet, and then it took me years of experience to understand what the hell he was trying to get me to understand. You can’t present a laundry list of potential chord substitutions in various progressions without the understanding of the derivations from the applicable theory and expect full understanding. Great lesson Mark. I kind of knew what tritone subs were, but combining this with secondary dominants was really eye-opening. Now I can understand jazz charts better. Throw some dominant extensions in there also explains what was always a mystery to me about how piano and guitar players came up with the chords they do when comping.
