This week we're looking at Triad Inversions played as Arpeggios. We'll look at what they are, how to play them and how they can be used in your bass lines.
The study of Inversions is an essential and foundational part of understanding musical harmony and a fundamental aspect of music theory in general. Even though the basic description of inversions can be summed up as simply 'a chord built from a chord tone other than the root note', there is a little more to the playing and application of inversions!
To demonstrate inversions in a bass line context we'll be working through the main verse riff to the song Master Blaster (Jammin') by Stevie Wonder. Last week we looked at Nate Watts' great unison line on the instrumental section and this week we're looking at the equally interesting verse lines.

This lesson shows how much music theory helps understanding, analysing, and of course creating bass lines. Thank you Mark!

Really nice that you explain music theory by seeking an example in an existing song. It makes more sense and so much more fun practicing. Great job!

Another great lesson Mark. I saw the title and thought, Ugh! I'll never get this. It sounded really complicated. But once again, you explained it simply and broke it down to manageable parts. You are a very good teacher.

I was listening to this song the other day on a CD but it was taking too long too learn by back tracking. So I've been playing just roots and 5ths to it and made up my own turn around.Thanks for showing us how to play it exactly and the theory behind it.Much more interesting and fun.

Brill lesson Mark and a great follow on to the instrumental riff one too - thanks very much. I'm just wondering why the F and G chords aren't minor as because this is in Cm then the iv and v chord should be minor shouldn't they? In terms of the bass line, the notes over G are root and 5th so guess that would work either way but the first bar of F has an A natural so thats F rather than Fm. Just a bit confused.

Don't get too locked into thinking of the diatonic chords of the key being your only palette. They are simply the diatonic chords. Many, if not most, songs will have chromatic notes in either the melody, harmony or both. It's where much of the interest comes from. It's very common to switch minor chords to major or dominant 7 chords. This can be through secondary dominant function or one of many different chromatic devices.

interesting lesson - I've been wondering what was meant by "inversion". Are inversions generally used when you want to descend the triad?
@talkingbasslessons
@talkingbasslessons 3 жыл бұрын
No not at all. Inversions are both ascending and descending. Take a C major triad. 1st inv is EGC. 2nd inv is GCE. It just refers to the lowest note in the voicing and comes from more of a chordal harmony perspective. Inversions are used in many different ways. It’s the same as saying “When would you use a triad arpeggio?” It’s pretty much impossible to give a general answer because it’s just a set of notes.
