Mark .... thank you. I bought your course 2 years ago, and because of it I can read bass music today I'm not where I should be because of lack of motivation but from time to time when i get the vibes I practice and it feels like I never stopped. *Great course, I highly recommend.*

It's pretty simple, and I think guitar and bass gives you a lot of freedom with the note you choose since I believe on guitar the same note repeats about 2.8 on average on the fretboard. Which note you use depends on the context. I would start off using only the first 4 frets of the instrument to start off with, since that is where you find most of the unique notes. Once you need to read more difficult music, you will have to branch out, but that will come naturally. It all comes down to fingering, as you don't want to play a note on the 4th fret while the second note is on the 13th fret, for example.

@@haverelmink this is a very late reply and i think you already know how this works but ima say it anyways. it doesnt really matter which strings you use to play what notes on, in jazz you mostly play high notes on the G string for the bright tone, but not only that walking bass line can be hard to play that’s why when you play walking bass line you use the notes wherever your hand is. But personally i love playing high notes on the D string bc of the warm tone, like for rock music, playing straight 8th notes higher notes on a lower string gives you a better and warmer tone, but sometimes they want a bright sound playing G on the D string would be a better option for the bright tone. To sum it up it depends on what tone you really want, so whatever is on the page is just what it’s telling you to play.

here's a cool hack for memorizing the notes: take an exercise book for bass. now write the note names above the lines in the book for every note you can find in there. go through the whole book - that might take an hour or so. i promise after that you will instantly recognize them from there on;) Rhythm is another story:D

javajimmy1090 Because it’s a waste of time and in the end, if you practice hard enough you can recognize instantly the notes without reading their name above it. You’ll never learn to read fast if you have to write the notes above it.

@@Cubi.Nguyen then what is the way to practice this?
@Cubi.Nguyen5 жыл бұрын
Xillany Read through music books and learn to recognize the notes by where the note is placed in the staff. It takes a lot of time and it’s very slow at the beginning, but if you practice it a bit every day you’ll see a huge difference. When I got in college I could barely read music notes and now I can play a lot of things I’ve never practiced just by sight reading. Very useful skill if you plan on playing with other people, accompanying or teaching music. It’s okay to have a reference note and just go one by one, for example theres a notes on the fifth line from down to up, your reference note is the F on the fourth line and count F-G-A. Mastering reading from down to up and vice versa is pretty useful too, I used the french system so it’s do re mi instead of C D E and I had to learn saying do re mi fa sol la si do starting from any notes and say them fluently backwards.

Hi Mark, regarding note length names, we in The Netherlands call a whole note a whole note, a quarter note a quarter note, an eighth note and so on. I know some people (like in church music) use the names breve, semi breve etc..

Those notes for bass guitar are written an octave higher than they actually sound. So if someone is using music written on the grand staff for piano, it's also helpful to learn to read all the notes an octave lower, if you want it to sound exactly as it's written for piano.

Even with your condition I'm sure step by step Mark's course can get you reading.

You might find this page useful: www.bdadyslexia.org.uk/educator/music-and-dyslexia One specific thing that might be worth exploring: use different colour highlighters to group notes together so that you see the colour blocks first. This may help to anchor the notes within each block. Good luck.

You don't 'have' to be able to read to be able to play music. But... reading is obviously great for getting gigs that require reading (90% of the gigs I've done over the past 20 years) and on a more direct level, it helps you learn your fingerboard REALLY well and improves your knowledge of rhythm.
