Mark watching this makes me super excited! I've avoided pentatonic scales and stuck to chord tones because I've always felt trapped because I just used the pentatonic on the first degree! Don't have my bass handy but can't wait to try this! Thanks a bunch, so clear as always!

A little "My Girl" action there. Built on the same pentatonic foundation. Remember when I first learned Jamerson's historic bass line over fifty years ago. He made the electric bass a true musical voice in modern recorded music. His influence is always worth noting, whenever there is discussion on how to expand the groove from more than just a one or two note percussive chord outline, to a sensuously felt harmonic foundation for the entire song!👑🎸🎵🎤

This is huge thanks so much! I never thought you could do the same runs on 4 and 5. I play every sunday in front of people, have been doing so for over 15 years now since middle school. And 99.5% of songs are major. Faster songs are pop rock and slow songs are all sweet ballads. There's nothing uncool about this, depending on the arrangement it can still sound incredible. Most guitar and bass lessons in youtube teach cool minor groove things, but it doesn't fit. I play bass or guitar on sundays depending on the songs and never had a bass at home, but because of your videos I've finally bought a bass and have rediscovered the joy of music. The bass is an incredible instrument. After playing everynight for the last weeks I'm now slowly getting to the point where I don't need sheets of music with chords. My ears can't transcribe the chord progression but my fingers on the bass can ~ For those guitarists out there who like to play the bass too but don't have one at home. I would highly recommend to get one with a bass amp.

Thank you, Mark, for showing how to play the pentatonic scale differently. After practicing that for less than 5 minutes, I could play it up and down pretty fast.

Thanks for this! It was very helpful. Sometimes its hard to identify scales when you're so used to practicing them in the one standard fingering. I actually use major and minor pentatonics a lot in my playing but don't even know it because the fingerings are different

Another great lesson, thanks! I did not realize the bit about the major pentatonic scales working over their respective major chords in a given key...That flows nicely with the below tidbit: Non-pro tip/hack: I don't aspire to be epic at bass (well, maybe I will be some day, because I never plan to stop improving/learning), so I've learned to cheat a bit. I did finally admit to myself that I HAVE to learn my major scales fully and properly, at least as far as shapes and intervals, up and down the neck in any key. However, after a few weeks, that seemed arduous, and I wasn't enjoying it. So after some time off from that, I figured out actually, if I just focus on major pentatonic, it gets me 90% of the way there with a lot less effort. Now I can play up and down the neck, and since I roughly know my major scales, can always find those extra 2 notes when I want them. Also, then it occurred to me that there is no difference between a minor or major scale, other than the note you start on. Then today, I saw a lesson from Scott Divine that showed all these other scales (dorian, ionian, etc) work the same way. So it turned out to be a lovely shortcut!

The pentatonic scales was used exactly in an old song called "My Girl", it was a hit song in late 60s I guess, the band's name is Temptation. I heard it in 70s as I was too young or it didn't get to our country yet at that time.
@talkingbasslessons

The song is by The Temptations and the pentatonic riff you're thinking of is on guitar, not bass.

@@talkingbasslessons oh, you are absolutely right ! I played lead when I was in one of Bangkok's night clubs. Now I remember that the bass lines intro --- goes like this,, 45 fah soe( slur) hammer on at four & 11 doe doe at one & at two &- fah soe 45.... And so on. In Later 80s some old folks bass players had a hard time playing that grooves or riffs sth, thanks, your explanations are quite clear btw. 1978 I tried to get that sound in guitars, so I yanked strings very often but no slap though, and old heads disliked it back yours is not arts it's bloody rough harsh 😂 stop it, I yanked " play that funky music riffs in guitar, the bass lines were too smooth to me. Like 1_ *1_ 1_ 45 b7 1-' die *doe _ doe_ fah soe tah doe'-. I am not making one up above over you, just sharing good old stuffs, anyway I guess I say you are great coach! Now I am in Burma it's a poor country now former British colony that was a good time the most prosperious one by British, I mean most can't afford to learn with you here but when I will be in USA, I will recommend you to all bass players to be guys, peace bro.!!

An interesting observation. Major pentatonic runs sound better ascending, while minor pentatonic runs sound better descending. Almost everyone I know in person agrees.

It's likely not a mistake that the minor pentatonic video taught A Minor and this major pentatonic video teaches C Major. A Minor is the relative minor of the C Major. Noodling around on this C Major feels a lot like noodling around that A minor.
