Thank you, Norm, for putting Garland's name on the table. By you doing that very thing is long past due in acknowledgement of where, for me, is where the problem began. Back then, I wrote many times that I envisioned Garland and those working with him with regard to the coup attempt, starting their workday in a large conference room picking lint out of their collective navel since Garland mentioned on more than one occasion, about not wanting the investigation to look political. If the attempted coup wasn't political then what the hell did Garland think it was? So much time was lost because of Garland's nonsense.

Garland's attempted prosecution of Trump appeared to be political because it began two years too late. Either Trump should have been prosecuted on day one, or Biden should have halted the Garland's prosecution (invoking Gerald Ford - heal the country and move forward).

As a lifetime Dem living for many years in the South, the influence of religion is not trivial here. The Christian right does claim a stake in the country’s future and this election contains an element of this viewpoint. Greater analysis of this is useful.

I think many do not understand the effect of the religious right, the underlying connection beyond race is religious commonalities in pentecostal & catholic conservative faith. I like the history documented in The Shadow Network by Nelson. They approve and support trump because many diabolical religious leaders have created a narrative (in a controlled closed media loop) based on fear and anger that makes them believe trump’s significant negatives are positives to overcome the greater evil. I heard almost no campaign messages about lifting the income cap on Social Security taxes. Right now only the first $168,000 of income is taxed, so the wealthy pay a small percent of their income compared to the poor and middle class. Democrats want to lift this cap and collect fairly. Republicans pretend this doesn’t exist (and Dems go along with not talking about it), claim we’re out of money, and want to cut Social Security and Medicare so the rich can keep hoarding their wealth. They want our country to become a Christian Nation. Our country was absolutely and demonstrably NOT founded as a Christian Nation or used the Bible for the basis of our laws. Thomas Jefferson's most valued accomplishments engraved on his head stone are "Author of the Declaration of Independence [and] of the Statute of Virginia for religious freedom & Father of the University of Virginia." Separation of church and state was highly important to the founders. We will experience a hostile take over of this country that no one expected would ever happen. The Democrats have NO power to stop it, unless they win control of the House. The military generals are making plans to manage the catastrophe -- they know our country has been taken over from within. It could be like Germany in 1932. Trump's tariffs will cause astronomical inflation and we will pay them, not China. There are many right wing special interest groups and rich people who have been planning this take over of our government for decades. Trump was the perfect opportunity. He allowed them to gain control of the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) (all five conservative Justices were appointed by the Federalist Society). For their plan to work, they had to keep Trump from being convicted and sentenced. Judge Cannon (supposedly randomly assigned to the case, but I doubt it since she was selected by the Federalist Society and Senator Marco Rubio (now in the Trump admin) and appointed by Trump in January 2021) constantly and unnecessarily delayed the classified documents trial then dismissed the case after Justice Clarence Thomas indicated in a note that she could.. The SCOTUS delayed the decision on presidential immunity until the last possible day to make it closer to the election. Then Special Counsel Jack Smith could not continue with trial, because he had to prove that Trump was not immune, wasting more time. I predict the SCOTUS will continue to gradually eliminate individual rights while they give more rights to corporations and billionaires. The billionaires will control ALL branches of our government. I have watched some right wing media and read poster's comments. I can tell you without any doubt, that your son (along with millions of Americans) was systematically brainwashed by right wing media (I mean that sincerely). If you watch right wing media you are highly likely to doubt your own judgement about what you believe and become brainwashed too. It was a well coordinated, sophisticated, and intentional program designed to ensnare people just like your son. MAGA is organized just like a cult (including support communities) using the exact same psychological techniques cults use. I suspected it was funded by billionaires like the Koch brothers, Leonard Leo, and Elon Musk, because the right wing media channels were well funded, produced, organized, and disciplined. It is similar to the story about the Russians funding some content creators in the US to spread Russian propaganda. It is the biggest story that the main stream media is ignoring. I advise you learn about cult deprogramming. I know it all sounds like a conspiracy theory but it all fits together without any absurdity. Do your own research and reach your own conclusion. How many transsexuals has your son ever encountered? Who shoved it down his throat? It was Trump who was shoving it down his throat so he wouldn't forget it. Trump constantly played ads about it. Why should civil servants loose their jobs? They have the most experience in making government work in their departments. They are not eliminating civil servants. When religious leaders prayed over their new god, when the said he was chosen by god to lead this country and the only reactions were amusement and disregard never was treated as it should have been. We never learn anything. You cannot fight against religious fanaticism. In a country that had as one of its tenants to keep church and state separate, we saw a great and continuing effort for the right to use religion to address their policies. They cherry picked scripture and conveniently ignored the rest and especially ignored what would have been considered “Sins” that any other person except Trump would be accused for. This religious extremism calls for male dominance and female submission, calls for intolerance of any other religion, and most of all it allows for laws and actions to be promoted and easily accepted because it has been twisted to fit. Look to the Mideast to see how dangerous this can become. The democrats were not running against the Republicans, they were running against a religious cult that half the country has accepted. Our founding fathers understood what religious extremism could lead to, unfortunately we did not listen. You can debate all you want, our right will be stripped away until separation of church and state will prevail. Until then, look to the Mideast for what can happen to nations that are rule by developing religious extremism.

It is this perception of being a party of elites, that we need to work on. Additionally, you can’t say joy wasn’t enough simply because you and your friends felt it, and still we lost. Where to start? What can I personally do? YES! Our Democratic methods need to be changed! We need to reach out with a personalized touch for different people. We need to point out what accomplishments we as democrats made. We need to shout our accomplishments. That was the thing I was wondering. At the debate, every time Kamala said anything that was accomplished under her vice presidency, I thought: "why aren't they shouting that from the rooftops?" Democrats need to publicize every last accomplishment, big or small. We need to call out the issues that need work and what they plan to do. Trump is a loudmouth. That's one big reason why he won. Also slot of the tax credits for child care and home buyers sounded like spending. Where was the example of tariffs before the election and why do tshirts who cares about tshirts. How about needed items.. phones, diapers, components that go into American made products. How it could affect everything. And really I would have voted for a can of green beans over him, but watch a Cheney Harris anything and Cheney KISS and Harris did not, and while I loved the joy she need to have more moments where she pulled it back and was serious. She did a great job but that’s what I saw.

Very good discussion. The project I see for Democrats is how to avoid hubris. Ask, truly ask, why our recent policy accomplishments (even our fundamental ideology, so to speak) which favor and support working people and communities not gaining even broader appeal? Are people not listening; or have these positions come to seem irrelevant or false or disconnected to certain parts of the electorate? What are we taking for granted, and why?

I'm in Arkansas - NO politician bothers to speak to us. Republicans know they'll win, so they ignore our voice. Democrats know they'll lose, so they don't bother to show up. If they don't care about us, why should be vote for any of them? I miss voting split ticket. I have not voted for a Republican since they issued the Contract on America in 1994. I was in Missouri until 2019, now I'm in Arkansas. NOBODY has bothered to campaign for my vote. If Walz had come to deep red rural Arkansas, it would have bent the needle. If Harris had campaigned in deep red Little Rock, it would have bent the needle. Would they have won here? Not likely, but the down ballot races would have been effected. Would THEY have won?
