How Do I Know If My Bone is Broken?

There are several symptoms and signs that you can look for to indicate if a bone is broken. An XRay is almost always the diagnostic test of choice, however, knowing these symptoms and signs can give you an indication that there may be a fracture before you get to the hospital.

When my (then 5 yr old) son broke his arm, the only real sign was pain. Very little swelling, absolutely no immediate bruising. So add Mom’s intuition to the list 😉. Only 4 weeks to heal! Kids are jerks. And the old “if you can move it, it’s not broken” is BS as well.

Ha,ha, Docs, when I broke both my ankles last year, I kind of knew right away from the signals my body was giving me! I also heard the left one pop as I went down! Yes, the x rays officially confirmed it at St. Mike's Emerg but shock, a feeling that something really bad had just happened, immediate significant swelling, heat and discoloration and, above all, not being able to bear any weight at all, were key indicators that lunch was officially over and my next ride was in an ambulance! It has taken about a year to fully recover- that is, after physiotherapy, learning to walk properly again, and finally, trusting that my ankles are as strong as they were before the accident. I had never broken a bone before that but certainly it is a far different feeling than just sustaining a sprain!

@@TalkingWithDocs Thank you for creating this channel- it really does help people at times when they really need good and clear information. No disrespect to the hospital or to the fantastic doctors and technicians that I met ( and thank goodness for OHIP!) but the follow up care and direction that I received was woefully lacking. Not one professional that I dealt with asked me how I was going to cope at home (or even how I was going to get back to the waiting room after I had been casted up!) There was no ongoing plan for me once I had left the hospital premises except for having scheduled follow up visits to the Fracture Clinic at St. Mikes which ironically is located below ground level and has several steps down to the front door ( there is a wheelchair elevator as well, but I had no idea how to use it at the first visit!) I did recover with the help of very good friends and the sheer luck that I live in a one level dwelling but someone in a more vulnerable or isolated position may have been left in a very serious bind. I think that hospitals need to enquire a little more about their patient's circumstances - not everyone has family at home to look after them. Thanks again- I certainly learned a lot from my broken ankle "journey!" I continue to support this channel and have recommended it to others.

Yup, I've broken a few bones, it's usually painfully obvious. pun intended. One time I had to try hard to convince the ER doc my foot was broken. I had to take my other shoe and sock off and I'm like look at the other foot, does it look the same? He reluctantly took an xray where a formerly fairly straight bone now made two 90 degree turns. I'm like told you so, your body doesn't lie to you.

I've broken 5 bones and only a buckle fracture on my wrist had significant swelling. I have a bad track record of not thinking I have broken something and not going to the ER. I ended up not going to the hospital for my wrist for 2 weeks cause it was the first day of the ski trip and the medics thought I sprained it so I bowled and skied for the rest of the week. When I snapped my left humerus in half about as close to my shoulder as you could get and it didn't even swell or discolor so I went 4 days before going to the ER to get it checked.

What are your options on standing outside of a car second door open, put arm through to put the lock down on the passenger window in the front. Friend shut the door with arm still in between. Main point is on the otter arm in the middle. Instant pain of course. There is a lump there starting to bruise but is not severely swollen or bruised. Had a strange feeling of pain and both stuck like it needed to be pushed back or something. Was a tight bursting feeling like it needed to be pushed if that makes sense? That was last night- iced it rest etc. pain still there and certain positions are worse like just letting it rest on my leg: heard a couple of clicks now after it happened not at the time. Was not sure if it was just bruising not a bad injury. Pain occasionally goes down into the fingers. What do you think to leave it ? I know I don’t have x ray vision either was just curious what your opinions are. Again not massively swollen and bruised but pain is intense. Maybe the lump I can feel is a tendon or something ? Thank you to any advice !!!

Just curious , my wrist has been killing . 2 doctors without even looking at it said oh it probably sprained. Since then that was in June within 24 hrs of last visit in June a knot came up on underside of outer part of wrist . Distal area. Stays swollen I can’t turn it to any degree. And when I wake up I can’t even close my fist . So I go to urgent care yesterday wait a hr after I convinced them to do a X-ray and she said I don’t see a broken bone must be Pseudo gout???? This is insane! I have had broken bones. As matter fact I have full hip replacement now and walked on a broke leg for 3 days . This feels broke. Or at least a ligament or tendon. But gout/ I don’t eat red meat or anything like that. She give me steroids just like the last provider that did not help. What should I do . I’m desperate 🙏❤️🦋

Hi parks099. Hard to say why the diagnosis of pseudogout was given. Xray would rule out a fracture. If you have a serious soft tissue condition an ultrasound and ultimately an MRI will provide more information. Best of luck to you. I found out my leg was broken pretty easy: I looked down at my calf and in the middle there was what looked to be a joint, a joint A that is not supposed to be there B it’s bent left. Hope this helps guys

Thanks everybody for commenting. So it does depend on the type of fracture, comminution (how many pieces), displacement, etc however with all comers we would probably say femur. My leg got stuck under a 4 wheeler and I think I twisted it a bit. I got out in about 10 seconds. It didn’t hurt too much after I got out but it still hurt. I could walk for a bit but with time it kept getting worse. In bed it hurts when I move in bed, last night I could barely sleep. This morning I can’t was or move it without pain. It’s not swelling I could walk on it at first. I don’t know if I broke it or not. The pain is in my left leg on the right side by my kneecap. Could it be Broken or is it just another injury?
