Council Tax - £2,000 per year for having our bins emptied and the rubbish taken away once a week. I really do not see any other services from my local council!

Agreed, more money for less service. Here in Powys we had a great council led by Independents. Now it's liblab in partnership and within months they turned the whole county on its head. Most recent thing is no longer repairing unclassified roads. Could not make it up this is a rural area where many of the high use roads are unclassified.

You can only stop paying council tax if you are self-employed. If you don't pay, they will deduct it from your wages or benefits

All councils are registered with Company House, registered as plc Company. This means they are a profit making, now if they cannot prioritise their profits and spending properly as a company, then they should be liquidised and made bankrupt. Their assets seized and full financial improprieties fully investigated. All CEOs directors should have their finances and bank accounts suspended. You know, just like any other Public, Limited, Company. Any fraudulent, laundering or theft should be punishable with the strongest prison sentences. Oh and by the way, I understand that a very high number of Councillors in this country do NOT pay their Council Taxes. Please explain this, sre they exempt?, if so why? If not, then why are they above the Law and not being threatened with imprisonment? You know like us common plebs. That they believe we are.

They took me to court last week for owing £87 their costs were £80.50 so i went to the hearing and it was actually a real judge so i told the judge I don't think it is reasonable for them to double my debt for something i had never refused to pay the judge agreed and told them they wont be getting the extortionate costs there was council employees there just for me and they also had 300 other people on their list for liability orders at £80.50 a go its a disgrace

I also don't like paying CT with direct debit and occasionally miss a payment and Mike is so right, the council pounces on that so fast and usually they send a threatening letter saying I must pay by a certain date which by the time it gets to me is only a day or two after I receive it, usually at the end of the week. It's amazing how quick they are to react this way when if I try to raise any other issues with them they claim it can take weeks to get back to me. They seem to prioritise making threats over customer service.

my council tax is over £2k a year and what do I get for the cash? 3 weekly black bag collections (3 bag limit) that are about to move to every 4 weeks. I can get these removed privately at £2 a bag. police you never see unless you get caught going the 20mph instantly limit.

I had a council tax debt for five years. When they sent the bailiffs I completely ignored them, they ended having to use two companies and eventually they handed back the debt to the council and then I payed it at the original debt amount in instalments without the bailiff charges

Last year, I was pestering my council to send me a council tax bill for 10 months and put me in debt . If people are getting threatened with prison. What about council workers not doing there jobs. There is no room in prisons anyway. If people did go to prison it don't make sense more tax money wasted!

@XBARNSTERX Soon as I got my letter, I arranged the payment plan. That is what I was trying to do to avoid debt. It's because I got made redundant and went on UC. and I was trying to get my council tax reduction. It was just frustrating going every week to the council, and nothing was happening. Now, I'm paying it off on my benefits, made me £250 in debt with electricity at the time, and use food banks. Luckily, a charity called warm and well-paid £140 off my electric and UC give me an advance payment to pay £90 to pay off for 12 months period. It just had a knock on affect with my other bills. It didn't help me. I was not getting my full rent paid for a year till April this year. I've had health issues since October last year, and I just want to be working again.

The problem is Councils in the eyes of the public aren't doing enough work or offer enough services for the overpriced council tax, only the rich areas can any real service or kept clean. In Northampton for example that Council is a sham, utterly useless. I would dare say council tax is squeezing people who are already struggling to buy food for their kids, likely another reason why people are rioting.

2,000 quid p.a. to have a dustbin emptied once a fortnight, it's always been a rip off, no way to challenge the amount demanded other than to stop paying, then the council can go straight to bailiff recovery without the attendance of the debtor at a court hearing, an absurd system.

a couple of things need doing. 1) not fully convinced by this one but we've all heard the prayer room exemption, if this is true there are many times I've gone to the bathroom and said a good prayer so does this make me exempt? if it exists get rid of it, any property that offers residence should pay the tax regardless. (2) a maximum number of unrelated persons per bedroom, i.e. 3 bedrooms = 6 people, if the household goes over this then double their tax and if they get to 13 persons utilising said three bed property then triple the tax, these are all persons using the area's services and facilities they are as responsible for paying for those services as we all are
