Canada is a huge country. Our team works across 4 time zones. We have no choice-- somone will always be contacting someone else outside of regular work hours. The way our director deals with this is by having a understanding that as a norm- unless it's urgent- no one has to respond outside their working hours - The team has flexible working hours - so that makes it easier. It's not a breeze. However we make it work and sometimes it does mean you have to have meetings outside your normal hours.

It's amazing that the commentary surrounding the emails after work hours is on the employer not sending them after a certain hour rather than not expecting them to be answered at that time. My boss sends me emails at all times of the day and night at a time that suits them when they are dealing with whatever issue has arisen, but does not expect me to address them until I am back in the office during my paid working hours. My employer is 100% aware that I do not have work emails coming in on my phone, and that I will only answer emails during my work hours. It's all a case of boundaries, common sense, employee rights and work/life balance.
