I have seen ana heard Zakirji with L. Shankar three times. Met him at his lessons in Berkeley. Where we went for coffee. The two of us were at the tabla at one point. He asked me what I was getting. So great. I have been friends with a friend of his and we went to his headquarters in Marin. My friend was taking some of his percussion instruments. Zakir said to me, he's taking all of my toys! I have seen him numerous times with different people. Always a transcendent experience. So blissful. Thank you Zakir 🕉 gratitude 🙏 💖

All of us know Zakir Bhai is a genius and an excellent role model for how to be a great human being. I want to share my thoughts about Vinod, who has done this interview. Vinod, you have been a fabulous anchor. You have never interrupted Zakir Bhai. Your body language (and there by your intent and humbleness) depicted your interest in listening rather than leaving your mark. I wish all interviews, especially when done with maestros like Zakir Bhai, follow your way.

How sage to present the simple truth that there is NO SUCH THING as some rigid, fixed-eternally-in-sound-and-formalism music, that is it ALWAYS a fusion of influences. In a point-blank blast against the purists, without the slightest compromise of technical competence or artistic integrity. Those who can not understand should learn HOW to understand this; those who refuse to understand deserve pity, if not derision.

Beautiful interview. I met Ushtadji few times in past. He was down to earth and he could relate to everyone easily. He ha digested Tabla very well. Allarakhaji had the similar qualities. I met him few times also and once I reminded his program in Rajkot many years ago when he was playing in Columbia University. He talked about a small flight from Bombay to Rajkot and that was not steady and very scary. He travelled with Ravishankarji and other musicians. There was a Father and son Tabla concert.

Only a genius like him can talk about complicated matters like classical music at the level a layman can understand. And only a musician as learned as him could get Frank Sinatra's cadence perfectly like he did at 58:43 even though that was not his genre. I was fortunate enough to see him and his Dad perform with great masters like Ali Akbar Khan, Vilayat Khan, Shivkumar Sharma and others in the 1980's. Thanks for the memories.
