After many failed attempts at mindfulness I realised it was impossible for me without doing therapy first. Five months into Schema therapy, I started feeling grounded and comfortable enough with my breath and my feelings to stay mindful for longer and longer stretches of time throughout the day. It's been the best experience of my life.

Mindfulness: Making a coffee takes about 2 -5 mins depending on the amount of water in the kettle. Set a timer for 12 mins and take all that time to make a cup of coffee. This is really difficult to achieve for two reasons. 1 The mind hates a vacuum and emptiness so will fill your awareness with thoughts or other things to do. 2 The mind is already habituated to making a hot drink, so you are already super good a making it, so much so you could probably make one in your sleep. Using all your senses to focus on every minutia, the cup, the spoon, and the kettle, the coffee, the water, the sugar, the milk. Filling the kettle, the sound of the water, the fluidity of the water, the smell of the water, the increasing weight of the kettle, lifting the kettle, placing on the element, switching it on, watching the kettle light up, listening to the sound of the water and steam as the water heats up inside the kettle. ... There are so many details that are overlooked when we make the coffee. But we need to be aware of them all during this time and notice where our hands and feet are and whether they are hot or cold. Noticing the texture and feel of the flooring under our feet, whether we are wearing socks or shoes. Noticing the outside noise or other noises such as the fridge. We carry on this practice as much as possible putting as much detail as possible into our experience. During this time you have become more conscious. During this time you have become more present and in the moment. During this time you have intentionally paid attention. During this time you have been mindful. Mindfulness is the ability and intention to pay attention in the present moment. Without the interruption of thoughts and feelings. This involves focus, curiosity and the attunement of our environment/mind via the senses. By using our senses we can stay mindful by being curious and focusing on the detail. We take the skills we have learnt above and apply them to everything we do. We keep curious and look for the detail in our life. We develop these into habits, routines mindsets and behaviours. This should be our default mindset and we should gently nudge the mind back when we notice ourselves daydreaming, bored, or falling asleep. Our mindset is now fixed on the present. We recall the past only if it supports us or if we can learn from it by analysis. We think about the future if we are planning something, else we are always in the moment. The present moment is all we have, it is where the rubber hits the road. The mind knows when we are not riding a bike likewise we know when we are not paying attention and not being mindful. Develop the intention to pay attention, live in the moment, and be curious and interested in every detail. let this become your mindset. Develop the habit of being mindful every minute of every day and let it change your life. BTW, You cannot become mindful by thinking into being. You have to practise it. It is a body and mind meta-experience that is brought into being by action.

Maharishi recommends we close our eyes and experience pure unbounded awareness for twenty minutes and then engage in activity naturally and automatically as before. In time, the unbounded silence we experience during the TM technique grows into our daily experience in the relative, active world. More on my videos.

Meditation works great for those with some understanding of mindfulness and the barriers, such as falling asleep. Another way to discourage people from participating is by making every exercise like the last one. Mindfulness should be exhilarating and with very little effort. Developing mindfulness takes active daily practice to the point where you realise if you have stopped being mindful. Unless we are asleep, the mind can only operate in one of two states: mindfulness or non-mindfulness. You can say flow state is another mind state, where the mind and body are in total sync.

Great talk, lifted my spirits a little from my depression. Will try to constantly think about my thoughts in this way throughout the day. I also discovered that a way to mentally visualize the distancing of your thoughts vs. being in your flow of thoughts is comparing it to showing a picture roll in full screen vs. looking at the pictures in normal screen.

In the quote Dr. Siegel used the Buddha talks about subduing fear and dread, not just looking at it and not resisting. It seems he has interpreted that quote based on his own preconceived notions about how meditation is supposed to be done.

So there can be a correlation of mediation and into entering samadhi as per practices which could be compared akin to bears hibernating , so therefore the body during meditation and entering samadhi might be a chemical or physical activity to achieve such a state, if some could find the correlation between nature and the human body in such negative practice might even get a noble prize 😊

Meditation PROPERLY taught is of immense benefit. Playing with it, which is what Dr Siegal is doing, may harm as many as it helps. I am more than a little suspicious of this whole 'mindfullness' movement, although I would love to be proved wrong.

Mindfulness is great , I don't question it ! My main concern is that every technique has a potential failure rate which obviously we strive to reduce. So are there any strategies to fall back to if this happens. Well many questions come up which I guess may only be addressed with application of this mindfulness technique. Any input ! Thanks

Hey, well as he said, awareness, attention and remembering- the remembering is remembering to be mindful. When you catch yourself not being mindful you’ll become mindful again. With practice the moments of slipping are fewer.

(flight from what - for how-far??) 3:30 "The brain evolved not for happiness but for survival," but, (5:57), Lucy could analyze the past for "pleasure and pain"?! At about 57:50 he talks about a lot of bad thoughts, but what about the physiological abuse/neglect that affects how the brain forms; how to address that?

In the latest video on the Practical Health channel, it says that there are only 2 types of meditation practices - concentration meditation and mindfulness meditation. Basically, every time I focus on something, only on that object, I meditate. Is it really the case?

Depression can be from lack. It can be from abuses also. Being drained by abusive depleting relationships. Economic depression, out of control inflation and capitalism. Greed and corruption. Predatory lending and use/abuse. Life feels empty and dead because of isolation and social skills, re childhood and neglected from parents and teachers/church. Adults that do not pay attention to children's physical, emotional and social needs. Pay to play society. Interpersonal relationships and knowing thy self for self realization. Lack of the family clan and family values. Separation due to differing work schedules n a 24/7 society rather than sun to sun. capital greed and or the under educated working 2 or 3 jobs and no one is home. TV glamming or dummying down society and being feed lies and false narratives. News that is a drama show rather that true facts. ect ect

Very interested in mindfulness and what it has to offer - especially this lecture, which was great. But sometimes I can't help think it sounds like a self-help tranquilizer for reality. If we are so laid back as to be completely horizontal, aren't we missing something in the human experience? Aren't there occasions where shit happens and it's actually not (or shouldn't be) OK to "be with it" or "ride it out"'? Granted we defer too much to our emotions (for very good evolutionary reasons), but doesn't it come close to a message of: ignorance is bliss? Open to all views...

+davidsmail1987 The occasions where shit happens aren't the problem. It is you viewing the thing that happened as 'shit' in the first place. Not everyone will judge that situation to be as bad as you did. Our concepts about how things in life should be are different, hence why we react differently to the same situation. Mindfulness takes you out of the concepts you've created in your head and into reality as it is a.k.a. the ACTUAL reality, where we don't compare our situations to the ideal image of how it should be, but just let it be what it is.

Sounds very effective to bypass anxiety and overwhelming emotions, by shifting the focus from the idea causing these emotions, to your breathing or even to the bad feeling itself. Now of course the causes of these negative emotions are not addressed... isn't that a problem to release the stress when the source is still there ? I have experimented this when I was younger, I managed to release my stress before exams, then I didn't care anymore, and failed, same situation for jobs and career. When the time to pay your bills comes, the stress is back ! And your only answer is now mindfulness, erase anxiety and stress, and voila ! but the bills are still there.

Emotional experiential avoidance is the cause of anxiety disorders. OK what is the root cause of emotional experiential avoidance? Can we say not being prepared/educated/exposure and can we include neglect and or abuses both physical and verbal? Bulling/parent neglect and abuse? Adults talking down to kids that do not have the mental development to adsorb all that is being dished out? What about stability and or nurturing affection and or interpersonal relationships between parents and children and or children and educators, exposure for natural social skills? ? What is it that children are not given the chance to discover who they are but rather herded all day and told to sit in a desk all day, not talk and be talked at and not spoken with in order to form communication skills? What about all these frustrations? When will education change from robotics to human personal development? When will schools provide for nutrition so kids can grow and function properly? Why does the schools and churches not teach life skills first before work skills? Do they teach work skills? Lets look at how we are developing humans/human minds and bodies rather than just why humans have negative systems. Look more deeply into the cause of negative systems. Anxiety and panic are the effects not the causes. Both environment and nurturing, exposure or the lack there of to have awareness of contrast along with the time and support to self discover.

Mindsight is the term he coined for this. For the Buddhists out there: mindfulness is not unique to Buddhism and Buddhism doesnt own it. This is a form of brain training that doesnt require adherence to specific philosophies or beliefs about the universe. For many, that is it's strength. Your absolutism and 'I'm right, he's wrong' approach is contrary to His teachings

*I was traying to learn something new,* to specifically develop a mental/meditation/relaxation useful practice. . . *But felt a bit disappointed* with the direction that the speach took when talking about the friction of debunked evolutionary myth, particularly "Lucy's myth." *I love science! and hate religion,* despite all good that have brought in the past. But I am instead a believer and a Creationists, which means that there is no room for weak science derived from myths or impossible to prove debunked theories. ( *But I got the point and can be personally done and developed further,* without childish tales)

the flat tire day was many individual negative things, not just a flat tire. whereas the getting rear ended day was a day lacking all but the one negative part, getting your car bumped. so I think the examples are bad and do not show how tolerance works. tolerance is the moods of both day's two people switched around.

Hell we are taught to accept and tolerate too much as it is.People need to get pissed and stand up instead of rolling over. Jesus flipped tables so clearly there is a line before flipping the hell out. Stop telling people to accept and tolerate and start fixing the ills. People need to self focused on personal development, self care and self love so then it can branch out to others. A personas aging and health is self focused. Dealing with loss, empty nest, loss of partner, death of loved ones. Help people deal with that.

Physiological problems are mainly due to a lack of love, nurturing and education and exposure in early childhood. Lets fix this rather than label everything a physiological problem. That in its self is a problem. A person goes in for help because they cannot identify the root cause of their problems and instead of looking at educational, childhood, abuses, awareness you label everyone with being nuts and or drug and alcohol abusers and by the time you are dog and ponied on appoints meds and group therapy which is only more traumatic listen to other horror stories you still never get to the individuals root problems. Keeping your client list going for revenue instead of health and healing causing these to eventually go nuts and or turn to alcohol and drugs because they cannot get the help to start with. People do not listen, assist, or care but rather judge, assume and project based on their knowledge and experiences and not the individuals in order to check a label box and follow a script never getting to know the individual, their experiences or their lacked experiences. Again most is educational and love/interpersonal- personal development- self awareness and self realization. Lack of safety, security and support systems, lack of true friendships and camaraderie.
