What is really insidious here is not just disarmament but disarmament on the whim of another person, without being able to face one's accusers, compel witnesses, or have the decision to issue the DVRO made by a jury of one's peers. Judges hand these orders out like candy to any plaintiff on the say so of the plaintiff without any standard of evidence being applied. While it is important to protect people from violent abusers, we must also understand that a savvy abuser can use this system to disarm the victim of their abuse and discredit the victim in later court hearings or even trials by showing the DVRO. Savvy abusers or those in the throws of a divorce routinely use DVROs as a method of getting even, encumbering, or even imprisoning the opposition. Courts and their judges have a tough time believing that a woman can be the abuser and the man can be the victim.
