The De Jong situation epitomizes everything that is wrong with Man United. They overspend on bang-average English players, sign over the hill players as well as an egotistical 37 year old who once dumped them in their prime for another club, they have little to nothing in the way of academy talent and their salary structure is abysmal. NONE of these issues were present under Ferguson and they followed the Liverpool route after their glory days and made all the wrong choices. It's taken Liverpool decades to restore their power and it's even harder for United now as Liverpool and City are so dominant and consistent by accumulating 90 plus points a season to win titles. Chelsea have lots of money and a good squad and even they are finding it hard to compete. What hope do United have? United behave like they are one of the elite. It's time for the club to accept it's status, forget history and rebuild from the ground up. None of this "we are the biggest club in the world and have the right to be at the top" BS. Just get the basics right first. It takes TIME. It takes YEARS. Ole and other managers since Ferguson all tried quick expensive fixes but ignored the club's philosophy. Now United are a commercial enterprise money machine with no direction. Ten Hag won't fix that because he's trying to build on rotten foundations.

It's fair to say that a football club in England is a "club" , cradle to grave for the fanbase, and given good youth recruitment, often for players and staff alike. Man Utd are currently caught between two stools. A 'club' being run as a 'franchise'. Liverpool had the same problem with their last owners from the USA, but the current incumbents seem to get it. Oh. And the lack of youth development is absolutely part of it. Liverpool just improved Elliott's deal to sign him long term. Contrast that with, say, Pogba....

It doesn't matter if they miss out on him or not. Man Utd have already embarrassed themselves. The whole Man Utd heirarchy has been grovelling at his feet for the past 3 months. The board should have sat ETH down back in May and said "De Jong doesn't want to come, let's talk alternatives", but they were too desperate. Now they've accepted it and signed Casemiro, but have no progressive ball carrier to go alongside him. If they signed Casemiro 2 months ago they could have pipped Spurs to Bissouma, or Wolves to Matheus Nunes. Pogba leaving on a free just adds to that humiliation further. Chelsea have handled it the right way. Basically telling him they'll leave the door open and then carried on with business as usual.

De Jong doesn't want to join man utd. Why would he? They're not playing CL, they've got a weaker squad than last season, obvious dressing room problems and relentless media leaks about how bad the setup is.
