If you look at where the linesman is he is behind Bruno so he wouldn’t have noticed him slip. So from his point of view it was a high tackle. That’s why he said straight red and be honest from his point of view i thought it was red, until I see it from a different angle.

Bro all this is related to the "business case" that is football now. especially EPL. All of this VAR bs and related circus is for the business. As you aptly pointed out, game is done, result set in stone. These institutional investors, be it PEs or ME sovereign funds, are slowly but steadily killing the sport. They will do anything and everything to slow down the game (more the breaks, better the "business case" is). With every passing day, football across the globe is becoming less "sport" more "sports entertainment".

He is an assistant! He should not be forceful and basically making the decision. That's a weak referee. He is the 'boss' and should act like it. The assistant is a stronger personality and that's why this happened. That referee needs to grow a pair! And I'm at this for 29 years!!!😂😂

Can’t we simply every red from a ref is automatically looked at by the referee within the match

If that’s not absolutely bias from the linesman the way he went for Fernandes there I don’t know what is…. Shocking from the linesman and then very poor from VAR… United must really have destroyed these lots childhoods

Utd did indeed ruin our childhoods and it makes their current plight all the more enjoyable. It's been a great 6/7 years and I am continuing to enjoy the ride. Pantomime villains like Fernandes and clowns like McGuire make you genuinely worth watching.

Now theres so many people that can make money from betting on a decision now used to be mainly one! Imagine being in that job and you know giving someone a red card if done right could set you up for life! Who wouldn't be tempted especially when the players are so unlikable now

Refereeing has been nothing short of disgusting, completely inconsistent and seems to be going after arsenal more than any other team... 4 points lost already due to referees screwing up...

Murphy's claim that refs don't make decisions against particular individuals is laughable. If a player gets a reputation for exaggerating tackles against them (diving), refs will hardly ever give free kicks in their favour.

Theres a lot to unpack here. VAR is a good initiative just used poorly. Football refs need to learn from rugby TMO. The ref should use VAR in consultation to a decision that he makes. Football is more fast paced and the players aren't as disciplined as rugby players so in order to enforce decision first and foremost the PGMOL in concert with clubs need to underline the importance of not trying to influence on field decisions during match I.e players hounding the ref. With that being said teams must be able to contest a decision if they feel aggrieved. Almost like a review system in cricket where each team gets 2-3 reviews per game in the event that a on field decision is contested for VAR to intervene and the ref having to replay the said incident on screen. With audio of course so that we as fans are made aware of how the ref came to that decision.

Accountability is a good thing, which is why any and all VAR decisions should begin and end with the ref in the middle. No decision should be made by any eye in the sky; rather, this tool should be just that--a device to aid the referee's judgment. The man or woman in the middle should be the person to initiate any check. VAR as it is now actually undermines the on-field officials. If the center ref isn't sure about something, stop the match and go to the monitor. If they are sure, make the call. They are human and they will make mistakes, just like players. But it will be the mistake of someone in the middle of the action. You can't legislate or automate the humanity out of the game. If you did, what would the pundits have to talk about?! Let go of the idea that VAR will eliminate mistakes. Let go of the idea that checking the screen is negatively impacting the flow of the game. Let go of the idea that the refs are biased. At that level and that speed of play these people must react in a split second to incidents--and for those who've never refereed, that means running through a mental list of multiple considerations before making each and every immediate decision that you and I see. It is not easy. It's not always correct. But it's made by someone on the pitch.
