But with the 2021 Copa America and now the World Cup, Messi became the greatest of them, in my opinion. Ronaldo did come close to being counted among them, simply by virtue of his outrageous goal scoring ability. But his international career fell short. He is one of the greatest players ever for sure, with an illustrious club career, full of individual awards. But now that his career is ending, to me he finished at the level of other legends like Cruyff, Zidane, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo Nazairo, and Beckenbauer. He probably tops that list. But he does not make the GOAT shortlist. To do that you have to become more than a player - you have to transcend football to become a national a hero and change the sport itself. You have to have created legendary moments that got burned into people's memories, and which will be remembered for generations. Ronaldo always lacked that thing you can't describe - the touch of genius that set Messi, Pelé and Maradona apart. He was a goal scoring machine, but not much else. What truly set him apart was that he was the most marketable player ever. But he's no hero - he's a brand that was distributed en masse. He's not even close to Messi. He never was.

I'm no big fan of Cristiano. But, tbf, Messi also adapted his way to play when he turned 30. He has to decide if he turns alien. Back in the days, he was alien as soon as the first whistle was blown until the game ended. I have seen so many games of him, especially from 2007-2015 that it's not fair to claim he hasn't had to adapt his style. He had to. The point here is, that - despite being 35 - he is still the best player in the world. That is something no one had ever achieved, this kind of continuity for at least 15 years. I can't recall exactly if it was in 2004 or 2005 when Dinho was voted player of year by fifa. He said in an interview after the ceremony ( and I quote): "This award here says I'm the best player in the world, but I'm not even the best player at Barcelona." He was referring to Messi, of course. I think it was in 2005, but don't nail me on that ^^

For me Argentina was first to the ball,aggressive,kept formation,and played faster than usual starts (on purpose). Threw the French off.
