I think Kholi trumps that though with regards to ODI's. Sachin had a great record in that peak, but there were a bunch of guys who played massive amounts of games not far off. Kholi averages nearly 60 over his whole career, and if you only look at guys with some significant games behind them, he's almost in a different planet compared to them. In an career where he's almost averaging 10 more than the others, it's pretty extraordinary. And then you go to T20I's.... yeah, he's proper good. For the record, I'm still picking Sachin. But Kholi has one hell of an impressive resume, especially when he was captain.

Mind you Sachin played in an era where home Indian pitches were flat as highways. 2000s was the easiest batting era for tests.. Kohli plays in an era where home India pitches is rank turners.. Ball turns square from day 1. But in Sachin's era even 5th day was a batting pitch in India.. So a 49 average of Virat is as good as 55 in Sachin's era.

How can you guys compare Sachin with anyone ??? Earlier rules weren't made to simply entertain and earn money, look at the teams now constantly pushing 350-400 in odis and 250's in t20s. Modern day batters improving isn't the only reason, but the rules, of powerplay. Of ball change. If DRS etc have on a whole brought this massive tilt towards the game becoming batting friendly or runs oriented. That is why the batsman have to score now, where at one time you had to leave and pad your way to survive a lethal spell of an opposing bowler. Because 220-250 was a great score.

Then there are many bowlers like Shoaib Akhtar (257 Odi wkts), Abdul Razzaq (269 ODI wkts), Andrew Flintoff (375wkts) etc. who do not have big numbers but were exceptionally good. Kohli is much more privileged that he gets to play in his groove because of a much better batting lineup. It was a shame that Sachin suffered Tennis elbow, he lost a significant part of his peak, moreover he had to change his gameplay so as to sustain his career.

During the match fixing years, sachin has single handedly won matches for India, when he knew half the team was sold. And he had noone to complain to. Just imagine the level of pressure. Just because there was no media coverage at the time and probably you were in your nappies, you cannot take away that from him. 2011 world cup, the veteran sachin was the highest scorer whereas your king kohli was not even in top 5. By making rank turners in India and extreme swing pitches in England... Sachin Dravid played Tests when batting was easiest in Tests(2000s). Tests had a 60% chance of a draw in that era... Scores of even 900+ was made with just 2 inningses batted in entire 5 day was possible in that era... Tests started producing rank turners and it startes affecting batting averages... Kohli's test average of 49 is as good as 55 in past era of 2000s.

Sachin dominated against 3 generations of best bowlers in thsir prime and came out on top every time barring his last away tours in 2012. Call it bias, but with technology and home ground advantage starting to peak from the 90s, sachin should be considered the better batter than Bradman.

Imagine ANYONE ( not just Virat) at the age of 16 facing Waqar A, Wasim A and Imran K. Add to that he had never ever even practiced things of such speed in India ever. A kid, a Sachin goes on to perform from there till he retired, giving hope to India every single time. He should be compared to Lionel Mess, Pele , Michael P, Michael Jordan, Ali. All these legends were more than just about the game. They changed something about the sport. They took it forward to a next level and showed the world how sports can change life. Sachin belongs to such a level. He was born to push cricket as a sport. Another Virat might come, there might be other Virats in the history. There is only ONE Sachin.

"Who would you rather watch" is a rather incomplete question. The bats have changed significantly. With the new bats - you would not bother with Kohli. Sachin Tendulkar's cover drive with the old bat could break hands. He followed Gavaskar who batted with his left hand. No point in comparing numbers - See the desert storm innings (2) and Kohli has never done that to the best team of all time.

Agree include mohammed asif in that list too. Moreover, Sachin faced these poten bowling attacks in around the same period virat didn't face prime amir pre ban and mohakmed asif who at that time best test batsman like Kevin pieterson, AB devilliers, ponting, Clarke and amla rated as unplayable he faced a pakistani attack that had injury prone umar gul, wahab Riaz, a England attack with only broad and Anderson only good in home conditions Sri Lanka only had malinga South Africa had steyn aussies did have potent Johnson, and then starc but these attacks were never comparable with wasim, waqar, shoaib, saqlain. Mcgrath, Lee, warne. Vans, murli Shane bond. Ambrose and Co Sachin had to battle these bowling units in adversarial difficult conditions when reverse swing still was a phenomenon. Now there is no reverse swing with 2 new balls, bigger bats, smaller boundaries and generally conditions favouring batsman. I remember wisden cricket showed empirical data that had DRS been around wasim akram time he would of had 300 more wickets of plumb LBW. Fast competent skilled bowling was a thing of the 90's. Having said that maybe if kohli would be around that period due to his mindset he would easily excelled too.

Also, as for Tendulkar’s longevity, it was facilitated by the fact that the BCCI possibly has the best player/board relations in the world. Brian Lara and every star player after him eventually went to war with the WICB over their mismanagement of the team and the game in the region. And it has been argued that the board played a big part in his eventual retirement. It certainly wasn’t a natural retirement because his antepenultimate innings was a double hundred in Pakistan, where he became one of the then few men to score a hundred in one session

The attack Sachin faced was far more deadlier than what Virat faced both in fast n spin. The pitches were a lot nicer to bowlers. No DRS back then (Sachin would ve had 20 more centuries). Size of grounds. The pressure that Sachin had all through his career can be known only to people of India coz they switched off tv the moment he was out till Sehwag came (a decade of lone warrior 90's). I would argue that Sachin is the one exception to the rule when you talk about how today's players have more scrutiny compared to players from previous generations. That is true for most cases, other than Sachin. Non Indians probably don't have a full understanding of this but Sachin's standing was beyond that of a cricketer and a sportsman. He was the face of economic liberalization of India in the 90's. His face was on billboards everywhere and everyone in the country knew who he was. He was arguably the most powerful Indian at that time and one of the most single unifying figures of the time. So Sachin had ridiculous amount of media pressure, even though there was no social media. He kind of blew open the doors for the likes of Dhoni and Kohli to becomes such advertising giants.

Watched the second half of Sachin’s career and all of kohlis so idk how much my word holds but there’s a fundamental difference to both. Eras: Sachin played in an era of bowlers. There was no second new ball in odi and the kind of bowlers sachin faced. Ambrose, Walsh, murali, warne, mcgrath, pollock, donald, waqar, Wasim, shobai akhtar to name just a few. Virat while just as dominant in his own era facing bowlers like steyn, Anderson, Johnson, starc etc it’s a overall step down in quality. Plus this is a more batter friendly era. Look at the average averages of batters now and then. Skill and discipline : both undoubtedly skilled beyond valuation or measure but sachin especially in the later half of his career had way more discipline ex his innings vS Australia where he didn’t touch a ball outside the offstump. Kohli even though it’s a known weakness does chase after 5th stump balls. Impact: early part of Sachin’s career the Indian team had 2 good batsman 2 of whom used to fix games to make India lose. Back then if sachin got out Indians would stop watching. Latter half sachin had the ensemble cast around him in gangulys and early part of dhonis era. Virat played under dhonis his own and rohits era all world class teams. Virat getting out didn’t automatically mean india has lost. So while I think in white ball Virat edges out sachin in red ball there’s no dispute. Overall if you consider a young sachin who was belting bowlers the way prime kohli does(ofc I didn’t see him but it’s what my dad says.) sachin has to the overall greatest batsman in Indian history and the greatest to ever hold a bat

In test cricket, there is no comparison. Sachin is leaps ahead of the next. You see his away record, his record in SENA, record vs oppositions, he is basically peerless. In ODI cricket, they are basically equal. Kohli has better stats but he has played in a much easier ODI era where rules and conditions have favored the batsman. So the only fair yardstick to compare ODI cricketers across eras is to see how far ahead they were from the best of their peers. By that yardstick, both are roughly equal. Sachin was leaps and bounds ahead of you look at consistency and SR from his peers like Ponting and Lara. Similarly with Kohli. So overall, if we are saying who is the best batsman across ODI’s and Tests, then it has to be Sachin. Obviously no data to compare T20I’s, although Sachin had a few excellent seasons of IPL at the very end of his career, so he probably could have been a great T20I player as well.

Viv Richards. The best. Bradman and others got better runs, better averages, yes. But there are two reasons why I think Viv Richards is the best. 1. for sheer terror Viv put in the bowler's heart (both fast and spin) 2. We'd never know about how comfortable mentally Don Bradman was in facing Larwood and other hostile fast bowlers of his day. He did it just like everybody else. Mike Holding said it in as many words, when the bowl starts consistently coming at your body at 90+mph, all you are thinking about is self preservation. Viv was different. When helmets were made AVAILABLE and the rest of the world scrambled to find themselves those shields, Viv would -straddle- swagger out with only the maroon cap. Just to make it clear, I'm from India, and I love Sachin, Sehwag, Kohli, Laxman, and others. As well as Lara & ABD. But the best for me, Viv Richards, every day of the week.

Sachin's variety of shots was impressive. At the start of innings he would have different strokeplay, and mid innings or towards the end he would suddenly play unexpected shots to compensate for field spread. His knowledge of the field, the bowlers was astonishing. He could very well play all the shots Virat could, but the same cannot be said about Virat. Virat is more of the run collector who believes in running more. Sachin was a master in finding gaps at any stage of the innings and would still deal in fours and sixes. That is what made Sachin's batting interesting to watch. But I agree Virat has been a master at run-chasing and his run chasing is a treat to watch. But from pure batting perspective, Virat has limited variety of shots. I have rarely seen Virat playing slog sweep, reverse sweep(for a six which Sachin did), the flick shot or a good solid square cut. Virat has clear weakness on the off side as well. Sachin was way more instinctive than Virat, whereas Virat avoids risks.

My question here is there wasn't T-20 format in Sachin's era would it been have been difficult for him to manage 3 formats, and for someone like Virat isn't it difficult to switch from one format to other

Kolhi's test career is far from over. Kolhi has won us tests abroad which even Sachin could not do. Both are great though with Sachin still ahead but we will see how Kolhi does in the next few years

I am from the 90s undoubtedly the god of cricket in India Sachin Tendulkar 👍👍

Sachin built the foundation for the next generation of Indian cricketers like Virat to build the super structure. Ironically, people tend to praise the super structure Rather than the Foundation....

I think It's unfair to compare two different sportsmen who dominate in completely different times. Sachin is probably the perfectionist batsman to ever play the game. He made staggering numbers consistently for the longest time. He is a phenomenal talent when it comes to playing right shot for the particular ball and he's equipped with a mentality to not make mistakes and stay for the longest periods of time doing right things to score runs. As a result the team benifits from his performances. But when it comes to virat, he's got weakness, his shot selection is pretty much bang on but he rarely plays square cuts or backfoot cuts, he relies on straight batted shots for most of the ball in test cricket (or in general), his pull shot is not as effective as many others. Yet he finds his own ways to score huge runs and just his presence is a huge threat to the opposing side. Virat has been playing more cricket since a very long time as IPL has become a huge part for the cricket itself. When he walks in, the man just has one thought in his mind and that is to win the game for country no matter what. And that desire to win and dominate the game and opposition is what makes him different from the rest and its that mentality that ignited the fire not only in rest of the Indian contingents but the entire nation. He believes in winning by making miracles and that's why he's so passionate and he keeps giving his entirety till the end. If I need to win and I have to choose one out of these two legends of the game, I will choose virat Kohli repeatedly over Sachin Tendulkar. It's like listening to a simphony, or watching an artist paint a masterpiece everytime when this man's chasing and snatching games from opposition's hands.

Stats are misleading without context. Kohli has played in an era where batting has become a lot more easier. Virat is nowhere near Sachin.

Well, data says otherwise, Kohli os in an era where batting is signifocantky more difficult.

@@harshvardhanagrawal2225 or maybe they’re just not skilled enough to play in more difficult conditions due to the advent of t20. I’ve seen kohli struggle against bang average spinners and teams fall apart because of a bit of swing

Completely agree. Bats are bigger now, pitches have become much more batter friendly, rules have become more batter friendly, fitness standards have improved. Sachin even without all this in my opinion was better than Kohli

@@rohit19 exactly if you used the same yardstick to compare kohli then you’ll find 50 other players who are potentiallly better than Sachin too.

Compare the opposition during sachin era and kohli era as well Aus had mcgrath gillespie lee warne to name few Pak had wasim waqar shoaib saqlain Even zimbawe had heath olanga Sachin got compared directly to the likes of sir don bradman, has any one tried comparing kohli with him? We dont even have to compare the pressure of the era when they both played, when people say that televisions were switched off when sachin got out, its true, when people say the nation would stop when sachin was nearing a century its true, If some one wants to understand the weight he carried go check the semi final of 96 world cup or test match against pakistan in 99, that was the pressure he played under and delivered For ppl saying sachin never won matches LOL, sachin has 49 odi centuries in which 33 times india won, when chasing sachin has scored 17 centuries and india won 14, one of the most famous loss wud be the 175 against aus when sachin got out in 48th over In test sachin scored 51 centures, 20 won 20 draws For ppl arguing about flat pitches, a reminder that fielding restrictions wer not so batsmen friendly during those times, boundaries were not 60-66 yards, and bowlers could actually turn and swing the ball in indian conditions,
