This is so true. I've struggled with learning stand-alone vocabulary words because it's so boring and I don't know how to put them in sentences very well. I just started the TTMIK short stories and I am finding that I can learn new words quickly because they are in context in stories. I find I have word recognition right away, and word recall after several exposures.

I'm at level 3 of TTMIK and I use my first 500 hundred words, the best way to remember words for me is to pair the learning in books with watching dramas or youtube videos, shows.. Because like this, when I hear the words I've just learned and my brain is like "wow I know this word!!" and it gives context too so it really works well for me :)

One day I was having a conversation lesson with my teacher and talking about the books I have. I showed her the TTMIK books I have on Kindle. She suggested we go through three of the books together and that's how we got started. I meet with her 5 days a week. Each day we start with about 5 minutes of free talking then we go to the 500 words book and do a chapter. Then we switch to the 1100 phrases book and do two grammar forms. Finally we do one chapter in the beginner conversations book. Since my lessons are early in the morning, later in the day I review and write the vocabulary from the 500 words book in a notebook. The next lesson begins with free speaking and my teacher (who keeps a notebook of what words I don't know... or can't easily recall) and she either uses them in her speech or asks me things that would prompt me to use the new word. For words that are really useful in daily conversation, she'll bring them up again a day or two later... or even a week later. The words that are most meaningful to me tend to be remembered better. Also, I can ask her how two similar words are used and how to differentiate when to use each, so I'm learning those words in context. Thank you to the TTMIK team (and my iTalki conversation teacher) for helping me expand my vocabulary in the most natural way.

A word I learnt today is 달려가다 (dash, run, rush) eg. 갑자기 개가 내 차 앞으로 달려갔어요 (suddenly the dog ran in front of my car). I find it easier to remember new words if I can see link to a word I already know (even if the link only makes sense to me) I remember 문화 (culture) because of 무궁화 (Korean Rose - the national flower). I can see how sentences will be another great tool.

Yeah! Linking words to culture is very useful. As for the sentence you wrote, you can also use the word 달려들다 (to run toward oneself). 달려갔어요 sounds like the dog ran toward something that's far away from you : ) So you can say 갑자기 달려들었어요.

for higher level vocab, I highly recommend the book TOPIK in 30 Days Advanced Vocabulary! It has been an incredible resource to help me get past my plateau. They are mostly fairly uncommon words that you might only hear in books or news, and I can learn every single one by speaking alone with the sample sentence for each word. The audio recordings were a bit hard to find online due to a faulty link written om the book, but once I found the actual link it was great ^^ I just listen to the sentence recordings while im going for a walk and the meanings will often pop right back into my head. Basically, the advice offered in this video really is the best advice there is!

I learned 저는 소피 입니다 and just as you are suggesting, I found it really useful to tweak the sentence and switch 소피 with my actual name. Before that, all the people that I met, thought I was a guy named Sophie.

Since I am learning purely for fun, my learning is unstructured. My favorite way to learn new vocabulary, is listening to favorite songs. Some words get “stuck in my head “ then I look it up and usually remember the definition since it is already a part of a song I like. I used the same method when I learned English. What I should really focus on is learning sentence structure and grammar, then I can easily understand when words are conjugated 😊

Yeah and then sometimes you see a word but don't know the definition immediately but you remember it from a song so you do hear it in your head and then you just think back and you do know it after all! Such a good way to remember vocab :)

It’s a catch 22 but learning new vocabulary in a language you’re conversational in (intermediate) is so much easier because you can legit think of ways to use it. My Korean level is still beginner so when I try to imagine situations to use it it’s just not realistic and my brain knows that and seems to forget it quickly. Solution: move to Korea for a while to learn the language.

@@Aeri_007 yes I’ve been focusing on that a lot. One trouble I’ve been having is I have dyslexia so I’ve been accidentally flipping the characters ㄴㄱ, ㅓㅏ,ㅕㅑ. But it won’t be a long term problem I just need more practice. The same thing used to happen all the time as a kid with the letters b and d, which was unfortunate due to my name 😂 I’ll keep practicing so it happens less often. :) 👍🏻

One thing I’ve noticed watching kdramas I can read signs and know what building it is. Eg. 노리방= karaoke room. 우리는 빌어먹을 베스트야 is a sentence that I like. I also find myself using 괜찬하요 a lot since you can use it in many ways, just change tone to make it a question. I also have a story: I went into my friends work (I live in a country where the majority of people speak English) and we spoke in korean to each other and his coworker looked at us weird since I don’t look like I can speak Korean and my friend is Chinese 😅

There are certain words that I just can never seem to remember so I have found connecting them to words with the same syllables helps. For example, I could never remember 장을보다 which is to go grocery shopping. But then I learned that 장 means chapter. Now I remember them both. I don't know why that worked. Also, 희망 (hope), 사망 (death), 열망 (desire). I learned them together because the have syllables in common and they were all in the article I was reading. Now I know all three.

I usually try to send my bff a "korean sentences of the day". I try to summarzie a little activty or an event that happend to me that day and put it in a little phrase. I do use Translaters for stuff i dont know and to check on myself. My best freind then sends me the translated phrase and we check if the things and information i wanted to let her know actually arrived her. I recently learned the word 같다 (to be the same) because my italki teacher always starts our lesson by asking what I did that day. I usually tell her, "항상 같아요." 😂 In terms of context and practice, I like to use songs. I listen to *a lot* of K-pop and I'll often look up the lyrics to see if there are any words I already know, or if there's a line that I want to learn what it means. Also, I'll hear the same word or phrase in multiple songs and then I have that connection in my head, which makes it stick better.

“One step closer to actual usage” Creating a situation where you actually _produce_ a sentence containing the word is really helpful-because, after all, in real-life, _that’s_ what you want to do. So, get an image of, say, a messy room, maybe one with a calendar, and describe or talk about what you see, e.g., 책상부터정리해야해요 or 내일 영어 시험이 있어요, trying to use those words. (Obviously, having a bunch of generic images that you can use to evoke a lot of different situations is helpful.) That’s actually a lot more effective than responding to flashcards or writing down sentences (unless you happen to be meeting Koreans who want you give correct answers to flashcards or demonstrate your 한글 writing skills).

저는 숲에 한국어 연습을 하러 갔어요 My teacher told me to practice Korean while doing something that requires some physical exertion or dexterity, so I go to the nature reserve where I run, and I play "the ground is lava" on logs and boulders while practicing my vocab lists. XD I try to apply the words I'm learning to my practice. Last week I was learning anatomy, so I tried to apply it while I did my climbing/jumping/running routine. 손 when I had to pull myself up, 팔 when I needed to balance, 발 if I had to walk along a thin branch, 허리 if I had to lean my back against a tree to get around an obstacle...etc. Those words are really cemented in my brain now. I really do seem to be better at retaining information when I have to sweat for it than when I sit for hours copying down lists. XD I'm learning some nature themed words this week, and I'm applying them to my surroundings at the nature reserve.
