I also did the same, for about the same size lot. Did you aerate, as well? I only mowed, dethatcher and overseed. I'm hopeful the results are decent. The fact that skunks ripped up some turf doesn't help. Had to apply some grub killer after (I learned I should've put something down in May or June).

@@242-f5u my apologies for just noticing this, I did aerate. I mowed a few times before that taking it down shorter each time but I wished I clipped it down even shorter then I did? I feel my success would’ve been better if I had?! My existing grass grew fast and it looked overgrown before the fescue had a really good foothold so it was choked out some? I hope your over-seeding went well for you, I actually feel that I would have to do a complete kill and start over to possibly get the thick results I desire and even at that I may not achieve that because of the trees I have that shade certain areas in that part of the property?! Again I apologize for not responding sooner then this. Have a great weekend

Hey Pete, first of all thank you tremendously for all the knowledge you’ve shared with us over the years. I’ve got your renovation guides and watched your videos. Actually I’ve got the renovation guide printed, laminated and in a binder. I notice from time to time though that you drop a nugget on how you use herbicides that isn’t really covered in the guide. That’s the area where I find myself questioning my choices the most. I’d really appreciate if you’d do a deep dive into herbicides and how you use them in different scenarios. There’s so many options and how they can be used together or separately or even in a sequence that it’s pretty overwhelming when you only have one yard to learn on. I’m actually in a rental house for a few years until I build my house and I’m currently practicing on a 2,000 sq ft lawn before I move up to an approximately 50,000 sq ft lawn after I build my house. That’s why everything I can learn now will make a huge difference later when I’m dealing with a much larger scale. Thanks and God bless you brother.

Ed Kaempf 0 seconds ago I live in California, 30 miles east of Sacramento towards Tahoe (so just at the foothills). It's warm here (i.e., above 60 degrees) from about late February - November. It never snows here. My tall fescue is nearly all green from about mid September through June. And from July through September? About 70% of the areas stay green, 25% is yellow to brown, and 5% is empty patches. I reseeded and repaired my entire tall fescue lawn (about 12,000 square feet) over the past three weeks, starting after it was forecasted to stay below 90 degrees. My lawn is coming up full. My five (5) steps to a significantly thicker and repaired lawn from reseeding: (1) I did multiple detatchings (technically, not a dethatching, but a removal of dead grass above the thatch) of the entire lawn over a one-week period. I first used my Greenworks 10 Amp 14” corded electric dethatcher. Then, I manually used my Greenskeeper II rake (which is about three times more effective than the Greenworks dethatcher), twice. I collected enough dead grass to fill six, 90-gallon green waste toters (540 gals.). In my area, all household green waste goes into these 90-gal toters for eventual composting in maintained wind rows next to the landfill. I kept doing the Greenskeeper dethatching until it produced very little dead grass (i.e., so that the soil under my existing grass was as exposed as reasonably possible. (2) I aerated, by hand, just the really hard pan or compacted areas of my lawn (about 20%). I used a 3/4" drill bit on my DeWalt to get through the somewhat harder spots because my two-tine hand aerator is useless for soil that isn't mushy (the cores get jammed in the tines). (3) Using a 3-tine garden cultivator, I roughed up every bare spot to ensure full soil-to-seed contact, and to provide a somewhat softer soil base for the new seed. I hand seeded the bare spots. (4) After laying down the tall fescue seed ins some areas, and Scott's Thick 'R Lawn in others, using a Scotts rotary spreader (some seed designed for shade, the rest for sun), I put a very light dusting of potting soil on the entire lawn, one double handful at a time, to ensure a thin, but even coverage. 5) I set up my Hunter ICC irrigation controller to run each of my lawn irrigation stations for one minute, twice a day. This keeps the seed moist, but not underwater. I'm not even a tiny fraction of the professional video producer that Pete is, so no video. But he's trained me. IMHO, my lawn is looking pretty close to Pete's, so Pete, thanks very much, and I hope YOU'RE having a good day!

Pete, how low did you mow before the overseeding process began? I just received a 45 pound bag of your TTTF and was contemplating on scalping before throwing seed down. I've used round up on multiple sections of the yard, after killing off a half of the yard last year due to bermuda growth. Everything came in nice last year, but the other half of the yard, which i didnt kill off, has very lime like colored grass spread throughout in certain spots. Additionally, the half of the yard i killed off before the very first overseeding took place now has bermuda coming thru. I've since spot sprayed those areas, and my yard looks like it has the mange or similar to a dalmatian lol Do you have any advice as to the direction im heading with my lawn? By the way, i have no idea what the rather large green patches in my lawn were. Anyhow, they should be pretty toasty by now.
