This song single handedly forced me down the Cardiacs rabbit-hole. It is sensational and I'm only disappointed to have discovered their music this late on. That being said, I am extremely grateful to Tim and all of the members and contributors of Cardiacs/Sea Nymphs for the incredible body of work they gave their time and lives to. It's thrown around haphazardly at times, but I think in this instance the word 'Genius' sells the man short. RIP Tim

I'm crying my eyes out too. Saw them first in 1984 and missed about ten gigs from then to now. Nothing, nothing touches what Tim Smith did. Trues, pure genius. LOVE is all. All is LOVE. We WILL praise him.

Maybe the greatest prog punk song ever written. Completely conceived from beginning to end with a false climax in the middle that somehow tops itself. Each section logically leading to the next which is hard to pull off when composing an 8+ minute song. I put this above Yes' masterpiece Awaken because the middle section of Awaken dips. This song has no dips, it keeps taking you higher with relentless energy!

One of the best and underrated bands in the whole musical spectrum. Saw them several times in the so called classic line-up. Once in Leiden, at 00.00 o'clock when the 1st became the 2nd of December, Tim let the paper confetti canon shoot on my direction because it was my birthday and he knew! He draw me a cake afterwards on the back of a band picture. I hope I can offer him a cake when he recovered.

I also saw several by that line up. At one point (around 1990?) the audience became larger and they appeared on the verge of becoming very big. Not sure what then happened that caused their status to dip. Possibly line up changes, but did their songs also become more challenging? I'd welcome any explanation!

@@ViscountVile They signed with Rough Trade which promptly went bankrupt leaving them without a label unable to sell records due to the contract. In a way though, they found their own freedom with their own website and the suspiciously nefarious Alphabet Business Concern...

I found out too late god damn it... There are very few other bands I love as much (I'm OOOLLLDDD) but Timmy had soul along with the glorious music. My advice is to seek out Major Parkinson... I love them too and found out they found and loved Cardiacs after me so I was vindicated. Timmy loved them too. Now I find another new band I love loves Cardiacs. North Atlantic Oscillation grew on me slowly, but convinced me. All three deserve wider recognition.

Most scarily unusual band I have ever heard in recent times. My fave prog band was always Van der Graaf Generator because of their unique sound and song structures and sheer power and menace with an unhinged demigod as their singer songwriter madman. Cardiacs fit the VdGG mould in a totally original way and the way this song spirals ever skyward into oblivion is as inspired as anything Peter Hammill ever wrote. The Brits can show the world how its done in our own batshit crazy way.

Are the two girls alternating singing the same note to sustain it that long? If so, that's a great idea. I was wondering how they would do that high note live.

I can't find it right now but there's another Dirty Boy video shot from the wings and it confirms that is what they're doing, they'll each do it for about half the chord sequence with a little crossover to mask the transition. It's incredible how they make it sound so seamless.
@serloinz5 жыл бұрын
that's what i was thinking. I'm pretty sure there is a keyboard held down too.. would help hide the transition / make it sound fuller as well. I've just come across this song and it's blowing my mind :)
