Lex as a child bore a massive burden but let's face it lex being hated is solely on Lionel, Lionel was so ignorant to his own faults that even his wife seen how bad Lionel treated people and so regardless of she mercy killed Julian or not, Lionel would've played favourites just like he did with Lexs other brother (an affair with a maid), raised lex in a rich life style, where as the illegitimate son was put on the streets to see how he would fair without money, and if Lionel didn't do that angle of rich vs poor, Lionel would've made the boys hate each other through fighting for Lionel attention AND Love, Lionel didn't love anybody he just wanted heirs to his empire and Lylian seen this hence her mercy killing of Julian

@@bosspoke this was the only moment where Lex could have reconcile with Lionel but Jesus Lex just had to throw the opportunity a way to do so if I where a illegitimate son of Lionel and grew up out side the Luthor mansion and life style I rather be naïve and happy not knowing that i am a member of the Luthor famliy that is so screwed up and narcissistic in nature and have to be worried about being killed off by Lex or sent to be experimented on.

Well considering John Glover was a guest star in S1, his acting and performances earned him a regular full-time spot on the show (even the show runners admitted Glover was a happy accident and something they didn't intend to factor in, the show was to be solely about Clark but they made it about Clark and lex being raised differently) , honestly the show writers struck gold with the angle of making Jon Kent and Lionel polar opposites in parenting via season 1, Lionel treated lex like shit and only feigned love when around other people (strangers)

They were honestly the reason I became hooked on the show due to their awesome portrayal of the evil lineage known as the Luthors. Welling's awesome and Lana was easily the sweetest eye-candy in the store, but these two held it down for the entertainment value of the show. That's probably why Season 8+ kind of lost some charm once Lex left. Tess was a phenomenal successor but imagine had she and Lex worked alongside one another in an on-screen duo of destruction.

Smallville's rendition of Lex's past is so different from the comics which made the character so great since in the comics, lex was practically Lionel. I loved how smallville knew how to make the audience root for the bad guy at times. And with lex, I never stopped wanting him to have a happy ending.
@tysswe1
@tysswe1 9 жыл бұрын
+NeonTime Yeah, lex may have had a bad side and a bad past. Much of it was because of lionel. But because of it he worked harder then anyone to make things right and helping people. Then Clark being a complete idiot flipped on him for minor things, considering that Clarks own choices led to his fathers Death and the Death of marthas unborn baby. Clark was fucking worse then lex. And his "your faulth attitude" tipped lex over. Instead of helping him, he pushed buttons.
@Xehanort10
@Xehanort10 9 жыл бұрын
+tysswe1 Lex became evil because of his hunger for power and being willing to kill anyone who stood in the way of him getting it not because of Clark. I agree about Clark being the cause of Jonathan's death though. If Clark hadn't been so obsessed with Lana that he went back in time to save her from dying in the car crash she got into while trying to get away from Lex Jonathan would never have died of a heart attack after his argument with Lionel. Clark's obsession with Lana killed Jonathan but Clark isn't worse than Lex. Not by a long shot. Clark may have made mistakes and not been perfect but Lex was pure evil. You're just one of those Lex fanboys who blames Clark for everything wrong with Lex's life. Lex is my favourite Smallville character but he's to blame for most of the problems in his own life and his brother Julian's death, Lionel's abuse, being bullied by Oliver and his friends at Excelsior Academy and all that other stuff didn't justify the evil things that Lex did. He chose to become evil. He wasn't made evil and no one forced him to be evil. Both him and Clark are equally to blame for their friendship falling apart but if Lex hadn't been so obsessed with finding out Clark's secret that he wouldn't leave it alone they might have remained friends.

***** I remember I scene from the movie Men in Black III where a being described his talent for seeing into the future as a "Gigantic pain in the ass... but it has its moments." A perfect description of Smallville, full of angsty soap opera drama, yet with rare gems like this as an exception.
@RedThorn
@RedThorn 9 жыл бұрын
+John Curcio It WAS a teen soap opera. Looking back now, every single love triangle with Lana or any of the other girlfriends of Clark is practically unbearable. However, the Lex/Lionel elements of the show were pretty damn good. In fact, it's best to watch the show by just skipping all the crap on fast forward to get to great moments like this which were sadly few and far in between.

+THX-DC There's no such thing as a "teen soap opera", a teen drama is one thing and a soap opera is a completely different genre of television. There's no crap to fast forward, you're just a sheep following the stupid crowd. The first 6 seasons of Smallville are incredibile, they destroy everything on TV these days.
@Xehanort10
@Xehanort10 8 жыл бұрын
No the witchy stuff wasn't fun. In fact Season 4 is one of the 2 worst seasons in the show along with Season 6. Lana having an ancestor who was a witch was one of the stupidest plotlines in the show and was nothing but a pathetic attempt by the original producers of the show Alfred Gough and Miles Millar to try to make Lana interesting even though she's boring as hell and a way to continue shoving her down the audience's throats because Gough and Millar were obsessed with Lana because they fancied her actress Kristin Kreuk. That's literally the only reason she was kept around until Season 8 even though she should have left for good at the end of Season 3. The best Smallville seasons IMO are 3, 5, 7 and 9. Saying people are only repeating what idiots on the internet tend to write and that they're sheep following the stupid crowd just because they have different opinions to you is pathetic. And of course Seasons 1-6 had flaws and crap in them Seasons 4 and 6 especially and saying otherwise because you like them makes you a fanboy. The only good things Season 4 did were introducing Lois and redeeming Lionel.

Just imagine being a child and seeing your mother kill your baby brother to save him from your father, then realizing what would happen to your mom if your dad found out, so you take the blame, repress the memory and after years and years of abuse, wanting nothing more than your father's affection, you suddenly remember all this and as your father tries to give you the thing that you thought you wanted all along, all you can think of is how you had to protect your own mother from your father. How your father drove her to madness and how he took it all out on you. It's just such a diffucult situation because you can't even blame Lionel entirely. Of course you're gonna resent the person you think murdered your baby boy. Man, John Glover and Michael Rosenbaum were just on a whole other level. Their acting skills was lightyears beyond the rest of the cast and the way their characters were written was absolutely fantastic. It's scenes like this that actually made you understand why Lex turned out the way he did. The Luthors were just nothing but pain and tragedy

One thing I can say, Smallville had some damn good actors, it's like all of them together made the best cup of tea...lex and Lionel, outstanding performance, Clark, cloe', Jonathan, Martha etc. Oliver, Louise. Brilliant. Beautiful series, joy, hatred, anger, love, jealousy, you name it , it was there. One good series ..

This is one of the many well written well acted scenes in smallville history. You could take this whole scene and use it to teach a masterclass in acting. When a scene like this is so intensely personal that when you watch it as a third party you feel like your eavesdropping on something you have no business knowing, yeah its that good.

That scene is all too real. Come from a family with similar economic dynamics (yet with much more Old World influences), it's always brutal to rematch these kinds of clips. Thanks for posting!

I love this scene. For all the evil Lionel has done up to this point, not just to Lex but to everyone, and Lex allowing his father to realize what his personality, his lack of conscious, his cutthroat methods had ultimately cost him. It was at this scene where Lionel had discovered how much he was wrong. How evil he truly had been. And all the years of this behaviour were transformed into a tsunami of guilt. It is a good thing Lionel taught himself to be so strong. Because otherwise this would have killed him right then.

Oh my goodness! This scene was absolutely powerful! A master class in the art of acting! All of subtle nuances. The range of emotions to anger, to disbelief, to shock, to acceptance of a new reality and finally, to a father yearning to finally embrace a son that he loved, but couldn’t embrace, because he thought that he had killed his own brother and Lex, seeing all of that being fully displayed and rejecting him! Ultimately telling him that it’s too late! Does it get any better than this! I know that Tom Welling was the focal point of the show. His journey from a small town boy who’s trying to figure out what makes him so different from his peers, to his parents showing him the spaceship that brought him to Earth. To ultimately becoming THAT GUY ( They could never actually say or even use the term Superman) Was a great story! However, what always stole the show for me was the relationship between Lex and Lionel, powerfully done by these two men right here! Well done gentleman!

I love this scene for. Simple reason: This is the only time Lex got justice, not when he killed his father o put him in prison. This, where Lionel admitted unequivocally that he failed to be a father for Lex, out of nothing. No gaslighting, no turning tables, admitting he could’ve been the father Lex always craved for if only he had known, and has nobody to blame but himself. So cathartic and well made

It’s funny how Lionel‘s expressions come in because Lionel tries so hard to hide his emotions and not show weakness so that is what makes the scene so powerful is the fact that Lionel tried so hard to hide his emotions and it finally came out.

Let’s be honest, it’s hard to blame Lionel for resenting Lex of having killed his brother. Therefore if we really think about it, the whole destroying relationship between Lionel and Lex, Lex turning evil, all of this is caused by his crazy mother. Not only did she murder her child, but she let Lex took the blame. Without this anger resulting from Julian’s death, who knows how Lionel would have treated Lex, and we all know that Lex’s treatment from Lionel brought him to be the evil man he became.
@CGCareerCentral

Agreed to an extent. However Lionel was already a tyrant before the tragedy, which is why Lex's mother killed Julian in the first place. He probably would have been an abusive father anyway, though maybe not as bad.

Lex took on the role of the villain to protect his mother. Towards the end of the series, Lex says that he's going to become Clark's nemesis because that's what Clark needs to become the hero he's destined to be: without Lex challenging him, he'll never be as great as could be. This scene makes me think Lex really meant that when he said it. That he's willing to take on that role for someone he loves, because the sacrifice is worth it.
